Can I show you my carbon bowsprit - SAILBOAT REFIT
Welcome back to sailing NV, after 2 hot sweaty years on the hard stand in Fiji, transforming our Open 66 into a fast family cruiser, it’s great to be sailing again, and especially to be flying are giant gennakers.
This video is about the process we went through to modify our bowsprit to enable us to both fly our gennakers further forward as well as having a system to raise and lower our anchor.
Having a bowsprit sticking out the front to allow us to fly the gennakers further forward than the bow was important for us because our gennakers were designed this way as NV used to have a bowsprit in her racing days, so like this it keeps them far away from head sails and enables them to fly better.
This looks cruisey now - but the process of getting here wasn’t always so breezy.
The first step was to untie the bolts attaching the original anchor bowsprit in order to remove and remodel the setup.

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

What a passion for family, life, and sailing - all the very best wishes to you! Maybe there should be a new boat class for you, Duracell, and other racer conversions I don´t know from - such beautiful boats!

3:05 Is it a good thing that you have 6 Gennakers? Do most big sail boats have that many? Or how many should a boat have? Are some in better shape than others or do they serve different purposes? Maybe it is something to talk about in a future video when you are sailing across the ocean.
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
When we bought our boat it had 6 gennakers - and it's helpful for us because we want to do a sailing school and when you play with the gennakers sometimes they break! I guess race boats also have a lot as they also break them often. However probably most normal cruisers have only 1 or 2

We had to ditch our mainsail but had a smaller Dacron delivery main so we’re using that. The headsails and gennakers are good!

It made my back hurt just to watch Timo climbing into and out of that skinny bow and worming his way through that scaffolding! So good to see NV under gennaker, after all that work you both put into her.

hahaha yeah what a mission to get that bowsprit sorted! but yes so worth it now to have those gennakers flying again :)

For a cruising boat, the ability to keep sailing in light winds is so important, apart from saving fuel, it's quieter and usually a better motion. On long passages there isn't an option of using fuel. How about a sock for that lovely red gennaker?
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
Exactly right - yes we’d love a sock… one day!!
@guydepoorter
@guydepoorter Год назад
These sailareas are not ment for family cruising, can you imagine the wind suddenly picking up ! ?
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
@@guydepoorter sure we have to be careful - we’ve never actually flown the gennaker just as a family (yet) for example. We’ve usually had a bunch of crew onboard for gennaker flying and are very careful to take it down early. For sure we hope one day to manage to organise a sock and fly as a family too! Maybe when nemo gets a bit bigger ;)

I am sorry to say but your opening scene terrified me. My daughter and granddaughter sailed with us from the time of birth but the idea of them standing on the bowsprit underway with no tether just gives me the weebee geebees. We sail with netting lifeline netting all the way round the boat so that nobody human or animal can accidentally slip under the lifelines. In a race one time, it kept my wife aboard. She was working foredeck and we had a bad spinnaker take-down which pulled her off her feet and they went under the bottom of the netting but it stopped her about mid-thigh. It held her in place until we could recover the spin and get the boat back under control.

This message is rude for no purpose. I have absolutely no doubt that Timo and Joanna are fully competent to decide of the level of security for their own child!

@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
Hey Hayden yes we understand your response - you are right but it was very light winds and there were 2 adults very close behind nemo. we do have netting around most of the boat even the bow but has some netting around the sides. But you are right and for all offshore stuff Nemo will be tethered for sure
