I did it (too)! My babes were planted from seed and had matured to about 1ft tall in clumped sections so I needed to thin them before they choked one another. Should’ve done it much earlier but…life was living lol… so yea I actually transplanted them one day BEFORE watching this video. They were wilting the next morning so I was concerned. I also had removed all the dirt from around the roots before putting them in new holes which I didn’t know was incorrect until I watched the video. Long story short, they were limp for three days but I supported them with sticks and watered them each evening and on day four they were fully back to life. 3 weeks later they are almost 4ft tall!!!! Hope this helps another newbie!
Helpful video! I planted seeds and then transplanted the seedling to a raised bed in the corner of my garden. I’m going to 6:50 move my sunflowers from a raised bed into a large ceramic pot with holes in the bottom. I’m going to place my compost in the pot and use your tip about getting a large amount of roots. I have fish emulsion that I’ll add to rain barrel water. I’m very excited about putting them into a pot then on the wheel stand so that I can move around my patio and admire them. Ty
super helpful and adorable video. I’m a new gardener and a lil sunflower randomly popped up in our flower bed so I transplanted it to a pot today! Yay, thank u so much 22 year-old knucklehead x’D
I grew a few sunflowers starting in water, some I started in the house and some I started outside when it got warm out. 90 percent of them are a success especially the one I transplanted from a pot to the ground. That plant been through so much. When my plant was 3 feet I accidentally broke the stem. I was able to save it with duck tape. I can’t wait to see those giant flowers that it’s about to produce. The plant have 4 flower buds on one getting ready to sprout. What a lucky plant
I am a novice sunflower planter here started from seed a bit late and put too many in too small of a space...did same thing with my pumnkins and just pulled out some those to mske room for a couple big ones..but my sunflowers i really want them all and i planted them in a spot that has petty hard clay type soil down deeper and ive learned they grow deep and i do have s better area for them and can put the right soil in there for them..anyways i did pull up 3 of the sunflowers that were about a foot tall and put them in a giant pot for my sona dad to have out on his patio snd theyve been happy successful..but now the ones ive got still in the wrong place are a bit bigger and im just wondering if i rry moving them now will i loose them or will they survive
We transplant them and move them quick right back into the ground, lots of water right after planting them. They will wilt and look bad for a day or two then they perk up but I also live in northern nevada with clay like soil. Good video👍
@@gardenfork The great thing is if they have a dog they will be thrilled at the surprise findings of mystery balls lol :o) Great video! Very helpful, I've got my first sunflower from the plant shop in a wee little pot. I'll be transplanting it soon hurray!
Lovely couple and very helpful video. I have a few sunflower seedlings that i’m about to transplant, thanks for this tip. Cute labradors, full of energy 🤣🤣
Good Video! I figured out this same method after many tries. Chipmunks eat all my seeds where I WANT them, so I disperse seed everywhere and try to transplant (Hell, i just leave em where they are this year) ;) I beleive you have cabbage moths, if you see small white "butterflies" flitting around. I have the same problem. I stopped growing broccoli because it was a BAD problem 2 years ago and tried Kale in 2 containers. I have 2 cabbage moths flitting around. Tennis raquet works well. :)
Can I get my dogs to stop barking so I can make a video….most likely NOT! 😂 🌻Excellent video, I can’t wait to install our raised beds, my knees will thank me. Sorry about the deer flies we have huge black flies in the early spring and they are wretched! ☹️ 🪰
I transferred some sunflowers in a similar way, and they are all strong now. You mentioned that these were for flower cutting. Have you tried harvesting and roasting the seeds of the large, edible varieties? I've tried for years, but I must be making a mistake during harvesting, or prep, because I haven't had a single edible seed yet!
Hi Chris, ours get eaten by the birds before we can harvest any tangible amount of them. Do you have a fav large head variety? These are the poly headed varieties, which are great for cutting flowers. thx! eric.
Hi. I usually always start the sunflowers indoors and transplant and they’ve always done fine. Yours look great. Cabbage Loopers. They love any of the brassicas. They are the larvae of the little white moths you see flying around the garden. Little green worm looking things. You’ll usually find them on the underside of the leaves. DE will work well if you can get it on both sides of the leaves since it will get other pests also if loopers are not the cause. Bt works great but only works on soft bodied caterpillar worm type pests. It is a bacteria that is deadly to them but harmless to us and is organic. I use it on all the brassicas, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower etc.. Actually this is my first year ever growing cabbage so I’m curious to see how hard it will be to keep the loopers away since the heads grow so tight.
good to hear about gardening with sunflowers. i'm looking forward to the flowers this year. I use BT to keep the wax moths from ruining stored honeycomb frames, so I will use it on the plants as well, thanks again for the info Snow Pony, thx!
@@Zeldabug24 I wouldn’t worry about them being stunted as long as they get plenty of light and you transplant them into bigger pots once they get to a couple inches, then get them planted outdoors as soon as you can. I’ve transplanted 1 to 1-1/2 ft. Tall plants that were in 6 in. Pots before without any problem.
I literally just transplanted an already established 4’ sunflower 🌻 from the garden to a pot successfully 🪴🤗🙌🏽🥰🙌🏽 it doesn’t like a lot of water 😉 it only drooped at the top 4” and recovered in a day and a half 🙌🏽😎
Hi Robin, the garden is doing good, the sunflowers are growing, which is a plus. I hope to save the kale with some help in the comments here. thx! eric.
My sunflowers are all growing but one. It hasn't grown a bit (mammoth sunflowers that I got Ib pots and moved to my garden.) One isn't growing and it started turning yellow. I'm doing what I can to save it I think it was over watered so I potged it up and set it out back and moistened the soil with a spray bottle now I'm waiting to see..
I just planted some seeds last week, I am envious of your volunteers. Can you give us an idea of how old those that you were transplanting were? I have leaf hoppers that eat my kale as do grasshoppers. Here in FL kale doesn't like the heat although I once had a plant that stayed through 3 winters so you never know. Just like you never know about sunflowers. I had volunteers from the bird feeder a few years ago but I stopped feeding the birds (4 cats).
I transplanted 4 foot tall sunflowers and 3 out of the 4 are surviving. The tallest is really wilting and the flower head at the top is dying. Can I cut that off to rescue the plant?
I purchased,a hilanthus sunflower, it has about 5 heads and WAS beautiful, I was going to put it in the ground after about a month. I've,had it about 1 week and had,it sitting in the direct sun, watered it everyday and it has gradually been looking like it's firing, should I go ahead and put it in the ground?
Hi David, I put out some beer traps and did not catch many, and I sprayed neem on the kale and basil. Whatever is eating them is also eating the marigolds, which is unusual, because marigolds are supposed to repel insects. thx! eric.
I have a sunflower that is 1 1/2 feet tall, 2 feet wide and in a large pot. It is infested with ants and the leaves are turning brown so I decided to transplant it to my garden. I started it in the pot because we have unforgiving chipmunks that will not allow a sprout to grow. The pot I have I believe is large enough to support a large sunflower but I was worried it was getting damaged. Upon trying to remove it from the pot the top probably 8 or so inches separated from the rest of the root system which went all the way down to the bottom of the pot. The roots that tore off were all very small, hairlike in size but I am concerned too many of them were separated from the stalk. There is probably a foot wide, 8 or so inches long roots connected to the stalk. I have put in the ground and added water with fertilizer mixed in. Is there anything else I can do to preserve the flower? I'm not concerned if the growth is stunted and it doesn't get as tall as it would normally. I just want to prevent it from dying if possible.
The only thing about sunflowers is you cant plant them too close or they will kill each other off. Then your stuck wondering why your plants are dying. It's simply too close. However seeing your success on transplanting im going to try to separate the ones that have grown together.
did not know that about planting sunflowers too close Keana, thanks for that one. the transplanted sunflowers did OK, not as robust as direct seeded ones. thx! eric.
@@gardenfork My packets of Procut Sunflowers say they can be planted 4-6" apart for the single stem varieties and 12-14" apart for the branching ones. Nice transplanting video, btw!
I grow kale too, and all of my kale was eaten last year!! By some sort of BUG! I would like to know what they are, I have my kale again, so far so good this year! Great video, I have sunflowers coming up in beds too, but they always die when I try. I will give it a go.
It may be white moths laying eggs on the underside they turn into little green worms. I put a lace curtain over my Brussels sprouts, broccoli and kolarobi.
Hello! I was wondering where abouts do you live (not exact address lol) because it looks amazing and I am currently looking for a new state and location to move! Thanks GardenFork
For all those bugs I sprayed my plants with hydrogen peroxide and I don't have any bugs this year it's been 2 months they always ate my plants not this year
