I have the D7200 and I absolutely love it. It does great in low light, has a fast and accurate AF, tracks moving objects beautifully, and provides crisp images and color. I have shot weddings, wildlife, and landscapes with it, and I am fully confident in it's capabilities in almost any situation!

I have been thinking about getting rid of mine because I feel like the AF is slow and inaccurate......So why is yours so good? Do I need much better lenses?
@jovicanedeljkovic1885

the autofocus speed depends primarily on the lens, due to the light capacity that the lens receives.

@@nomadikmind3979 It's a little bit late for the answer, but maybe for somebody is usefull. I have the d7200 and i used with a Nikon 55-300mm lens and i tried in wildlife photography. It was good for large animals and large birds, but othervise, it's hunting a lot and slow. I saved some money and i bought a Sigma 150-600mm contemporary, and the difference is day and night. The autofocus is very fast, like miliseconds, no hunting if i get a litlle "hunting" it's from my bad, because sometimes accidentaly i focus on the branch before the bird, not always, but sometimes it happens, but that is my fault.

Making great shots is firstly a matter of being at the right time at the right place. Then having a good lens also helps a lot, more than the body. For example, put a Nikon 50mm f1.4 on the d7200, and you have got a winner setup. Or a sigma 18-35 f1.8 which is extremely sharp.

Skill is more important than gear. I’m not trying to brag, but I see tons of photographers using pro gear that take far inferior photos to mine (I use a d5500). If your customer doesn’t know anything about cameras, they won’t care what you use, just the result.
@stevemozzie6497

Totally agree. Shot a running event with a couple of primes and a D7200. 2 others used the massive 70-200mm expensive lens and most of their shots were out of focus.

the issue with the inferior cameras is the lack of control. If I started photography on one, I would have never stuck with it. I will always recommend a 7000 series over a 5000 or 3000.

Yes, of course you can use a D7200 for paid work. The sensors on the 7K series are perfectly fine, and the improved buffer on the D7200 makes it a decent choice for sports, events, and weddings. The main issue with a DX body is the crop factor, which can be a blessing and a curse. For instance, it makes a wide angle lens like the Nikkor 16-35 more like a mid-range zoom in terms of field of view, but doesn't eliminate the distortion that a wide angle lens can cause. On the other hand, a nice 35mm prime like the Sigma Art 35/1.4 pairs beautifully on a DX body like a D500 or D7K series camera and functions essentially as a 50mm prime. For anyone invested in DX bodies the Sigma 18-50 f/1.8 is a superb lens, and if I shot more weddings I wouldn't hesitate to use that as my primary lens on my D500, while saving my full frame bodies for wider angle perspectives and normal portrait length lenses like the 85/1.4.

I went to the store yesterday for an upgrade from my D3500 and I couldn't decide between the D7200 (with an 18-105mm lens), the D610, Z50 and the D7500. I love the optical viewfinder so thats why I didn't go for the Z50, and also don't have any Z lenses (i know there is an adapter for that) The D7500 has 4K, touchscreen and a articulating screen and is newer. But the D7200 has better battery, is cheaper, has 4 more megapixels and has 2 SD card slots. The D610 is a really good camera but a little older. But I don't have any FX lenses so that would also be painfull. I could buy some FX lenses but I realised that the DX cameras have so much more compatible lenses and way cheaper lenses. You can get a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 for 800$ and it beats every full frame camera with a more expensive lens. So,.... I went for the D7200, The image quality of the D7200 and the D3500 are pretty much the same. Maybe the D7200 is a little sharper and better but there is almost no diffirence that I can see. But the button layout, the settings, the possibilities are soooo nice. You can almost change every button function to what you want. Those extra buttons are nice. Weather sealing would help a lot. And that Small LCD panel is nice. The possibilty to use a battery grip is also nice. But there are a few reasons why I would go and use my D3500 instead of the D7200. The D7200 feels more solid than the D3500 but the D3500 feels really light and has a way more deeper grip. The D3500 has also all its buttons on the right side of the camera, this makes it easy to use while the D7200 has buttons all over the camera. And the D3500 has more battery life. I think the D3500 is capable to be used for professional shooting and there is no need for a better camera but people always look at the outside of your gear, they think, the bigger the gear, the better. But that isn't always true. The D3500 is an amazing camera and I think I will still use it a lot but the D7200 is just a little better for pro photography because those extra buttons, weather sealing, lcd panel, more settings,... but the quality is almost the same.

i own the D7200 and just love the feel of the camera with the additional professional battery grip with just a 35mm DX lens . although it's now a old camera for 2018 i still use it but not a lot as i am not a professional photographer. i don't use a second DSLR as i don't need one . if i would consider a backup I would rather buy another Nikon d7200 as the body's are cheaper to bye now so i would rather pay more on a expensive glass lens . also recommend to buy more expensive filter lens to prevent flares on the lens . I f i had to choose a pro DSLR i would have to really see what i can afford .

Does your D7200 have such large noise as mine ? I had D7100 and it was horrible how large noice it has - even on iso 200 i can see some noise which became a horrible even with iso 320 and more. Than i had read that D7200 has a big options to shoot in the dark and working iso up to 25000.. I have bought D7200 and i am confused that the noise is a same like in the D7100 - we have the same noise with iso 200, we have the large (horrible) noise with iso 400 and more.. The picture is not too clear as i have expected before.. Of course - almost all this noise can be removed in any graphical tools like Lightroom or DxOOpticalPro but whatever the picture becames not clear as it was expected before the buying D7200 (and D7100 also) I also have D5200 (with the same sensor as D7100) but the picture in D5200 is much clearer that it is from D7100.. Do all semi-professional cameras make high-noise pictures ? Do all semi-professionsl do pictures with lower quality than top amateur cameras (like D5200) ?

Sure, there are "pros" using DX cameras. For instance, there are "pro" wildlife photographers use DX cameras with their telephoto lenses so they can get that good reach of their subjects. Whoever says that DX cameras are only for "amateurs" and FX camera are only for "pros" is full of non-sense. Don't ever believe the myth! A camera and lens are tools to help a photographer captures a subject from what he or she sees.

Well most high end lenses are solely for FX cameras, and most pros use FX for their better, faster handling and features so one can assume professional paid photographer would have to buy FX in order to fit among the competition

@@danielgreen5803 I'm sorry, but a professional camera doesn't exist anywhere. there are good and slightly better cameras, good lenses and knowledge are the most important aids. It doesn't matter which camera you use if you know how to use it. The masterpiece depends exclusively on the photographer.

Having owned and shot with D300, D5200, D7100, D7200, D750, D500 and D850. I would ask what do you want to do? Eliminating the D850. The best for any kind of action is the D500 but the D7200 is EXTREMELY close especially in IQ. There is actually big difference in the D7100 and D7200. The sensor is better (yes it IS different) and a step up worth the little extra money. Don’t waste your time with a D5XXX. The controls are all through the menu missing the buttons a pro needs. They do have swivel screens. For portraits landscapes where you will no be cropping extensively. Go full frame from the beginning. The D750 has the tilt screen which is nice and might be able to find a good one in the $1200-$1300 range. For you the D610 maybe the answer. Don’t get a D600. Hard to go bad with D7200 or D610

I agree with Jordan McChesney Skill and knowledge is what makes the difference. And with Lightroom and Photoshop, any difference can be changed after. The first camera I bought was a Yashica Electro 35 GSN for $50 when I was station in Guam. Later I started using canon.Ae-1 AE-1 Programer and then the A-1. Later Nikon 6006.[Film camera}First digital Nikon D50, D7000, D7100 and then the Nikon D7200 which I use as a freelance Photographer for weddings, sports and studio work. And at that time I also had the Mayma RB67 ProS. Today I have the Nikon p900 and going to get the D7200 soon.

Fully agreed with D7100. When Sachin actually starts pro/paid work, he can get another D7100/D7200 (so that the two can have different lenses, also in case one camera fails). Regarding lenses, he should invest in minimum of DX lenses (e.g.: Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM) and rest FX lenses (e.g.: Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di VC USD G2, Nikon 50mm f1.8G) (if he plans to upgrade to full-frame in the future).

yes yes.....I have a d7200 and love it. I was all set to get a d7100 used and then I saw a refurbished d7200 from adorama for $760 in oct of 2016...so why not...there is one big advantage of the 7xxx series over the 5xxx series nikon's...and I tell you this coming from a d90...I don't think you can fine tune (calibrate) the auto focus for each lens on a d5300....IMHO...that's huge if you want to use third party and sometimes nikon lenses so that when you focus on someone's eyes the lens is not focusing on their ears or nose. Another advantage is being able to use much less expensive legacy lenses from nikon (D series for example) that don't have a focus motor in them...on a d5300 you could only shoot in manual focus as there is no focus motor in the camera....ps you can pick up a used older DX 17-50 2.8 tamron without image stabilization for about $190, maybe less....good luck in your choice

the 7200 uses old but great D lenses. That in my mind makes it the better budget rig the ISO makes it compete not better but compete with the first two full frame rigs in the Nikon line. The 5000 series will never be able to grow in that regard. this way if you do move on to full frame you have usable great glass. this is all IMO.

Maybe a silly question. When you see a lens that is designed for DX cameras, say the AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR, does that mean you're getting 10-20mm with a crop sensor, or does the multiplication factor still apply? So... 15-30mm.

All depends on print format in my opinion, D7100 or D7200 is perfect for weddings, even D7000 is good enough with good lenses, actually, some photographers are using micro 3/4 mirrorless cameras 16MP cameras, so full frame isn't only way to go. FF cameras are necessary for fashion photography and for big prints. If you use proper lenses, shallow field of focus isn't a problem for good photographer. For prints up to A3 format, 16MP resolution is good enough, even with some cropping. The best camera is your camera, most important are good settings and composition. First spend money on lenses, than upgrade your body.

I was on the same boat and ended up buying the d5300 because of the articulating screen. great all around camera. I bought only one dx lens, sigma 17-50 2.8. and the rest are fx lenses. For paid photography though, I highly agree that the d7100 would be the better choice as it would grant hss(which you might want for your outdoor engagement shoots), it has a built in focus motor and it is weather sealed. for those three reasons alone, I would recommend the d7100 over the d5300 for paid photography work.

As a fellow Indian, we dont get refurbs in India, the only source is ebay they charge almost new price for refurbs so i dont think refurbs makes much sense as the difference is too low. as of now i find d7200 body only to be cheaper in amazon. as far as shooting weddings a friend of mine did a lot of professional shoots with d7200 infact he started with d5100, eventually he upgraded to d750. i would suggest start with a d7200 or d7100 whichever you get for a better deal, later upgrade to d750 and still retain the d7200 as a backup or with a 70-200 as secondary camera.

That crop sensor does not just crop your pixels but also your lens length making a 100mm a 150mm. This might be an advantage if you shoot birds. It also crops the LIGHT! You lose 1.5 F Stops as well!

My 13-year-old Nikon D40 is getting really long in the tooth, it's acting like it has dementia. So I'm now in a position to look for a replacement on a limited budget. Based on yours, and almost every review I've seen. Plus my experience with a renting a D7100 and D7200, I am now officially looking for a well-loved pre-owned Nikon D7100 (I'd love to get one with an OEM Battery Grip included). You might find this a bit odd, but I primarily photograph Raptors that live at least part of the year here in Scottsdale AZ. Even though the D7200 has a deeper buffer, the output quality of the D7100 in the ultra-bright Sonoran desert is superior. Focus tracking seemed to perform better as well. I was invited to a rare photo day at a Raptor Rescue last year. There were many Professional bird/wildlife photographers there, and by far the most common rig was Nikon D7100/D7200/D500 with the Nikkor 200-500 lens. DX cameras are fantastic for birding, and the D7100 is very highly regarded. Thank you for your great videos.

I shoot pets with a crop sensor camera professionally - D500's. They are an excellent solution because they track fast enough for fast action. The D500 is also very good in low light although about 1 stop less than full frame (and yes, that can make a difference). I think I could get by with a D7200 for the same work. Another factor not mentioned regarding getting a D5300-D5600 is that it only has a single card slot. I think shooting professionally is pretty dangerous with such a camera due to the possibility of losing your entire shoot due to card failure. Finally, as others have mentioned, you will need a second camera to shoot professionally. It's required as a backup and allows you the convenience of having two cameras at the ready with different lenses.

I shoot professionally with a couple of D7100 cameras. I have a number of full frame lenses and a couple of crop sensor lenses. The camera works well with all of them, even my old 50mm Sigma Macro lens. I can shoot an entire event with my crop sensor 18mm to 200mm Nikon zoom lens and get great results. Yes. The Nikon D7100 or D7200 can and should be used for professional use. These cameras will not hold you back professionally. As for low light performance. I normally shoot with a speedlight so it has no effect I'm my product. When doing Real Estate photography, I shoot HDR and use long exposure rather than high ISO. I hope this helps. Good luck with your photography career.

Saying your going pro and becoming pro are two different things. If you've done plenty of research and decided what field to go into and are confident you'll establish a decent client base then without a doubt go with the best kit you can afford. If you can't answer the above with any certainty then an entry level model will suffice, if it works out that can become your back up.

Sachin: What about a D7100 AND a D7200, with small zoom & 50mm prime. This way you could save $$ on the D7100 and you would get the deep buffer of the D7200. If they're the same price then definitely get two D7200's. Otherwise one of each. What does Matt & everybody think of this solution? Best regards, Norman in Montreal.

In theory you should be able to use the D7200 for just about anything, however in reality there are a few examples of this camera that slipped through the theoretical quality control. Reported problems are focusing issues, oil / dirt debris on sensor, repeating dirt issues. A very frustrating experience, the best thing to shoot is the D7200 camera.
@derekgillan7314
@derekgillan7314 6 лет назад
Oil spots from new are not caused by owners, but agree they are caused by idiots at Nikon. Nikon have been suffering from quality problems since 2012, not getting better by the look of things. Don't accept crap.Dirt / dust can and most like;ly caused by owners.

18 -55 mm lens or 17-50 mm f2.8 lens is better in d7200 ... please reply.......
@MacPro8CoreMan
@MacPro8CoreMan 5 лет назад
Nikkor 18-55mm is a kit lens. It is low-cost and has a good bit of plastic in/on it. but it is well made, durable, has great VR, and very little image distortion. The Sigma costs 3 times as much, it is faster at f/2.8 and is made from higher quality materials. As a hobbyist photographer, I doubt you'd notice a difference in output. If you are a Pro, you would find the features and potential better image quality worth the money.

2019 I still agree with most of what he recommend But I would not recommend a d610 over a 7200 at all. D7100 all ways will be the best value I have both D7200 and D750 I’m a indoor and outdoor off camera flash and high speed sync shooter Did my first wedding gig in 1978 I like both bodies equally I have found I pick up my D7200 more than the D750 Buying a full frame if okay if you can spend as much on a less as you did on a body or more in most cases 8/10 on a 7200 or a full frame are equally amazingly sharp.

I guess that none of the customers could tell the difference between a photo shot with full frame and a cropped camera. The advantage of a full frame for weddings is probably less noise when you need to shoot with a higher ISO and in small rooms when you can't move back enough to get everything in the frame on a DX-camera with the same lens. Solution, you get a 17-50mm or a 17-55mm 2.8 instead of a 24-70mm.
@FrankNazario

I would be very hard pressed to justify a full frame setup... i would prefer a lens investment... that said a D7200 has so many features that make it a perfect working photographer tool that a full frame is more of a want than a need. i use the D7200 with a Sigma 18-35 art... and it is a beast for onlocation work and even sports, IF you know what you are looking for and don't use the "spray and pray technique", but 99% of my payed work was done on a D3200 with a kit lens for years with no complaints!!! dont get hung up on full frame VS APS-C wave... your technique and story telling is waaay more important to the customer than a fancy setup with blurry images or flat story. Ansel Adams said it perfectly.... "There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a blurry idea".

There are varying degrees of pro. You can be a professional football player in the 3rd division or a professional football player in the 1st division. As an owner of an online fashion store I just want a photographer who gives me good images for the site and for social media. When I say good shots it's more than just the image quality, it's also the "wow" shot for the front page and an understanding of what makes a good product shot. With the quality of cameras being what they are at the moment I would take a great inspirational knowledgeable photographer with a cropped sensor camera over a boring same same photographer with a full frame any day,

I'd go for the D7200 or D500 for wildlife, because you can fill the frame much better with the same lens, a 200-500mm becomes a 300-750mm on a DX body. You might end up wasting the extra megapixels of the D810 cropping many of the images in post if you can't get close enough to shy animals.

Seriously unless you are making money with photography i would not touch anything more than a d7200/d7500. And a 200-500mm is a good lens to start with for a couple years before making a move to super telephoto primes. All fun and games but before you drop $2000 on gear consider how often you are going to pick up this gear and patiently spend hours in forrests, parks etc. A lot of people buy wildlife gear and perhaps use them 2 or 3 times before selling them again. Having the proper gear is one thing. Having the luxury to spend hours and hours occasionally in a wildlife rich environment is a whole different thing.

Fabian Philippe Good point! I shoot as often as i can, but only when it’s sunny, and in Sweden (Where is live) it’s basicly only sunny weather in the spring and summer. I don’t think i should spend too much money right now on photography gear. Thanks!

Kasper Wieck i am not trying to discourage you from picking up wildlife photography. But it is really a passion. Wildlife photographers are nature lovers who have spend years of their free time in such environments without a camera. If you are not that kind of person wildlife photography is not the thing for you.
