If there's one thing I've learned with Nikon equipment, it's that most Nikon equipment doesn't change much between two very similar models, such as the Nikon D7100 and the Nikon D7200, and that if a particular model 6 or 7 years ago was considered very good back then, then it's still more than capable nowadays also. It's stupid that we are trained to believe that certain cameras are throw-away cameras after only a very short time on the market. The D7100 is arguably the very best DX format camera ever made by any manufacturer. The only complaint most people would have is the small buffer memory if you love to shoot fast sports or other such action.
@Rhiwwers
@Rhiwwers Год назад
The D7100 is still my main shooter and I agree that it's peak DX excellence. It's crazy how often I compare it to modern cameras, and can see that anything I'd gain from getting a new one I can usually compensate my way out of with creativity and just plain knowing the gear. I have shot a lot of fast moving stuff in the dark with it, even had to put down FX cameras and pick it up because it's just plain better, and usually the buffer issue can be solved by not mindlessly firing at everything that moves but letting it breathe a little bit between the action. Sucks but I'll take it until I can afford something that actually replaces it. I found myself annoyed to hell with the ISO noise lately, but then Adobe updated their AI denoise in LR, and suddenly it's less of an issue. Also worth noting is, that not even the D500 or any D7000's that came after it exceeds the 24 MP it brings to the table. It's a great camera and I feel great every single time I outperform with it.

I will quite often pair my D7100 with my D610 and two lenses, usually the 18-36 and 70-300 which gives me a range of 18-450, with only a gap between 55 and 70. The 24 MP sensors can be processed to look pretty much the same, so I find it a very versatile kit. Same batteries to boot.

Started with a D5100 around 2014. I shot a lot with that thing using the 18-55 kitlens. Even used that with a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 (version 1). Then switched to a D7100. That was an amazing jump. I still have the D7100 around. Was too busy with study etc. Now just have that D7100, a 35 f/1.8 + 50 f/1.8. I'm still very impressed by this budget combo. Seems like its also a good time to get the F-mount lenses. Its just that the resell value isn't like before.

I have a D7100 as a backup go my D800. But its not a regular kind of backup: I use is to get additional magnification from my lenses if I am shooting subjects from far away. Image wise I am constantly impressed by its sharp, crisp, and colorful image quality. WIth the right lens, the camera produces truly superior images as well as well above average video quality. The 7100 is dependable and easy to use. It is quite durable though largely with its Magnesium allow skeleton. I love that its a light camera. Pro tip: you can survive with a less expensive body IF you also avoid “kit” lenses.

The D7100 is such a good choice that still own mine along side my D850, D780, D500, D700, D200 and D80. Get the point? The D7100 is actually better than the D7200.
@Jason-fp7vi
@Jason-fp7vi Год назад
Hi Jules. Do you have any experience with the D7200? I am looking for an upgrade from my D3200 to gain working auto focus on old style AF lenses, metering on AI lenses, and better low light response and auto focus. Here in Canada D7100's sell for ~500 CAD used, the D7200 goes for ~800 CAD used. For an extra $300 Canadian / $200 USD, do you think the D7200 is a better buy than a d7100 in our market?
@julesvuottosphotofocus4696
@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Год назад
There are only a few differences. The 7200 has a larger buffer which is only important if you are shooting action . It also has better lowlight autofocus, and better battery life. Unless you are shooting in low light or sports and birds in flight I say save some money and go with the 7100. You can put the savings towards a lens.

@tonyb1223
@tonyb1223 Год назад
I would start by checking the firmware is at the latest revision, (1.4), this will mean it has most of the issues sorted out, just note 1.4 may cause some non Nikon lenses not to work if you go that route (hence I still am on 1.3). The lens range will cover most of what you want to do, but its a kit lens so it won't be the best, just an all rounder that will get you into photography. You may find it lacks reach for some subjects like wildlife photography, a 55-300 or a 70-300mm may be an option if you want that extra reach. You want to then just get out and take pictures, get use to the camera to start with, use auto and let it do the hard work. Get an eye for what you like to do, nature, urban, general, astro photography, and then go check out photographers on youtube who will give advice on that area. Then the scary bit begins, taking the camera off auto and really understanding what it does, use the histogram (and get an understanding of it, again plenty of vids on how it works), it will help you with the cameras exposure. Then its just practice, play and experiment with different subjects. You will also need to get to understand the exposure triangle once you take it off auto, how to use shutter and aperture priority, and manual, also don't be afraid to use auto ISO, its one of the settings that is overlooked and can help you out for everyday photography rather than being stuck on ISO 100 😊

If memory serves ... then the Nikon D7100 has been off the market for a while. But you can most likely find a gently used one still on the used market. But anyway, if you can actually find one, then YES! It's more than just a very good camera, and you can no doubt easily find a used one for less than $400 or even less than $200. In some ways ... that D7100 has many of the same features and capabilities of a few of the best Nikon full frame cameras, but just scaled down a bit. You can surely still get a B+ level performance out of this camera for only a C+ price, or even a D+ price on the used market.
