I always reach out to your videos when I'm conflicted about a certain product or ingredients combinations because you make everything so simple and comprehensive. I've been using a Glycolic Acid cleanser followed by Vitamin C. The cleanser has 5% of Glycolic Acid and 3% of Mandelic Acid. My skin has been okay with this combination so far. I always thought that it was a big no-no to pair exfoliant with vitamin c ... I'm glad to know not everything is so black and white. Thank you for always helping us ❤️
It really depends on the formulations you are using, your overall skin tolerance, and even your skin type. So it is very individual. 😉 And I am happy to help, and thank you 😀

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I bought The Ordinary ascorbic acid 8% + alpha arbutin 2%. I have a LOT of hyperpigmentation, so I'm hoping it helps a little. :)
Hi Melissa fairly new subscriber but I love your videos x I wanted to ask how or if I could make a routine out of these products because my post inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been really bad lately and I’ve used some of these products but more so Individually rather than together - The ordinary glycolic acid 7% - The ordinary vitamin c suspension 23% + Ha spheres 2% - The inkey list tranexamic acid night treatment - Alpha arbutain ( not sure if I will go for the ordinary or the inkey list) And maybe a salicylic acid cleanser though I’m not sure how to go about using them or if I can use them together etc, I’d really appreciate the help xx
Hi Melissa! I see that you recommend using the ordinary glycolic acid and vitamin c in the evening. Can I use this combination as my morning routine with sunscreen? Or better to use chemical exfoliants as PM routine ? Thank you ❤
Hello 🙂 The Vitamin C suspensions are best to use in the evening as they only contain Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), and their formulation tend to sit a bit on the skin, so it is not ideal to use in the morning. For Glycolic Acid, sure, you can use it in the morning before SPF, but sometimes it stings or even burns when used in combination, so either you need to wait a bit if it happens or not use them together.
Hi Melissa, thank you for your videos! I would like to ask you wether i could use aha and TO vit c in the morning skincare routine. In Paula's choise site i have read an article that says to use ahas both in the morning and in the evening routine. I use vit c in the morning and the TO granactive 5% in the evening. What do you think?
Generally, there is no issue using them in the morning as long as you follow with sunscreen, but since most people do not do this.. it's best to use them in the evening 😉 So, you can use them whenever you want, just stick to sunscreen when exposed to the sun.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you for your quick answer! I am happy to hear that i can use the ahas along with vit c in the morning. I always use korean sunscreen with 50 ++++ uv and uva protection also because I use retinoids in the evening routine. Bye!
hello , can i use glycolic acid 7% from the ordinary and vitamin c from advanced clinicals same day ? or can i use vitamin c the day other after using glycolic acid ?
Both options are possible; however, the best approach would likely be to alternate days. That way, you do not overwhelm the skin. But test it and see what works best for you.
Hi Melissa, I want to ask something, can I use 2,5% AHA and 1% BHA toner after my facial wash and then let it dry first, and then using my vitamin C serum after my toner is completely dry?
What do you think about using the ordinary lactic acid 5% followed by the geek and gorgeous c-glow serum? Their sales team says that c-glow should always be first in routine, but I trust your opinion more..
Yes, because she read Leslie Baumann's book. It is also a bit controversial since, on the one hand, you have better absorption of Vitamin C if you already have a lower pH (so using Lactic Acid before). On the other hand, you have lactic acid + hyaluronic acid, which may build a layer so the vitamin C cannot penetrate as well into the skin. So it is tricky to say. My recommendation would be to test it to see what you like most.
Hi Melissa, can I use the ordinary glycolic acid 7% toner and then the ordinary 100% L-Ascorbic acid powder in the same routine at night? Can this combination be used every night? Love your content, keep up the good work!
if you are careful yes. If not, no 😉 Here is a guide: Clean face pat the skin dry apply glycolic acid wait 30-60seconds Apply Serums + Vitamin C Powder: Use a small amount of Vitamin C powder (about ¼ of the spoon that comes with the powder), apply it onto the palm of your hand, then add 2-3 drops of Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid to it, along with 7-10 drops of Marine Hyaluronics or 3-4 drops of Hyaluronic Acid. Mix it in the palms of your hands, and then apply it across your face and neck. And it will be too much when using the Glycolic Acid + Ascorbic Acid daily since it will disrupt the skin barrier every time, and after some time, it will irritate. So be mindful, or adjust it constantly!
Hi Melissa, I really love your videos Do you think it’s okay to use as Ascorbic acid and sunscreen on my face and amlactin body cream for the rest of my body both morning and night
What Vitamin C product do you use? You only need to use SPF during daytime, in the evening there is no SPF needed. Do you use a body cream with Lactic Acid in it?
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I use the ordinary ascorbic acid and spf in the morning but I don’t use spf at night. Yes, my body cream has lactic acid (I use amlactin)
Do you use The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin, Ascorbic Acid Powder or The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension? Ok. If I understood this correctly, your body cream contains 12% of Lactic Acid? You may be able to use it daily. However, I recommend starting with every other day and then moving up to daily if that's fine for your skin.
Hey Melissa, great video, thank you! I have a question. Can I use lactic acid 10% from TO and Ascorbic acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% from TO in the MORNINGS? I've tried that combination without irritation. What are your thoughts? Thank you!
Yes, however, you should use sunscreen after that; otherwise, it can decrease the efficacy and lead to sunburn, and the vitamin C may oxidize when exposed to the sunlight and heat.
Can I use the glycolic acid toner 7% Monday Wednesday and Friday and then the absorbic acid 8% + ascorbic acid 2% Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday? Please answer. I have already bought both products.
It's generally safe to use both glycolic acid and ascorbic acid in your skincare routine, but it's important to use them properly to avoid any potential irritation or over-exfoliation. Using the glycolic acid toner 7% three times a week and the ascorbic acid 8% + ascorbic acid 2% on the other days of the week is a good approach to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. This will also give your skin time to rest and recover between exfoliation days. However, keep in mind that both of these products are active ingredients and can be potentially irritating if overused. It's important to listen to your skin and adjust your routine as needed. If you experience any redness, stinging, or excessive dryness, you may want to reduce the frequency of use or use a lower concentration. Also, be sure to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 during the day when using these products, as they can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun.
Hi Melissa, I use the Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum. Is it possible for me to use The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + Hyaluronic Acid 2% with the Timeless Vitamin C? I also have the same question about using The Ordinary Buffet Serum (no Peptides) with the Timeless or The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + Hyaluronic Acid with Timeless. Any advice you give is very much appreciated. Thank you for another great video.
Hello Heather 😀 Generally, when using strengths over 15% of Ascorbic Acid with a low pH and combining it with high a strength of Lactic Acid or Glycolic Acid, chances to get an irritation increase dramatically. (According to studies) So when doing the combination, I recommend being cautious to not end up with burns on the skin. For the peptides, it is clear that according to The Ordinary, you cannot use them with Vitamin C or AHA/BHA. Here is what the say: "Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids. Instead of developing a complex guide listing the compatibility of each of our peptides with each acid and Vitamin C, we have adapted the following approach to maximize efficacy for the maximum number of people: It is best to not use Peptides in the same routine as the following products: Direct acids, LAA (L-Ascorbic Acid) and ELAA (Ethylated Ascorbic Acid). In addition, we would recommend avoiding the use of products containing copper peptides in the same routine as strong antioxidants as well as direct acids/LAA/ELAA."
Technically, yes, both treatments can be used. However, they are both highly acidic and may lead to increased sensitivity. A better approach might be to use them on separate days. For instance: Monday Evening: Glycolic Acid Tuesday Evening: Vitamin C Suspension Continue the pattern through the week as needed However, this regimen might eventually become too intense for some individuals. Both of these treatments are potent, so it's important to adjust usage based on your personal skin tolerance and needs.
Hi Melissa. For my PM routine(every other day) I use The Ordinary Lactic Acid, then The Ordinary Vitamin C suspension. Would you recommend adding The Ordinary Hyaluronic 2% acid into my routine and at what step? I have mature skin. Love your videos 💜
Hello 😀 You can use Hyaluronic Acid after Lactic Acid but before the Vitamin C suspension. However, it does not layer well with the Vitamin C suspension and often leads to pilling. So my advice would be to use it when not using the Vitamin C suspension.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial hey the minimalist vitamin c serum has lactic acid and hyaluronic mixed in it. Is it good bcoz if we apply vitamin c serum everyday it means we r indirectly subjecting our skin ti chemical exfoliation everyday bcoz of lactic acid.
Yeah, it is excellent when being a bit older. I am pretty sure that your skin can benefit from daily use. Just be careful in the beginning so that you do not irritate the skin.

Hello Melissa, thank you for the super informative video! I am going to be starting a new skincare routine shortly using mostly The Ordinary products, and I would like your opinion, if that's okay, so I can build a solid regime :) I have used their products before, and I enjoyed them, so this time I bought quite a few that I think would do me good. My skin type and concerns: - Mostly oily skin, especially around the t-zone, and sometimes with a bit of dryness/flakiness on the cheeks/temples. - I used to have a lot of acne, so I am still acne-prone, although it has improved significantly over the years. - I have some scarring/marks/texture issues now and get a few new pimples occasionally. - I do feel like I have a lot of redness on my cheeks, especially once I'm using products and rubbing/massaging my face, as it gets quite red, but I don't believe I'm that sensitive, only a little. Here's the list of products I intend to use: - Cleanser (La Roche Posay Effaclar 2% Salicylic Acid + LHA) - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% - Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone - Moisturizer (I am trying out BIODERMA's Sebium Mat Control, which seems great, but I also have The Ordinary's Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA on the way, which I wanna test as well!) - I also have the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution left from the times I used it, and it was pretty promising! I think I'll get back to using it, maybe once a week or so. Still have to figure that out. I believe that the cleanser, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and moisturizer could be used both mornings and nights, right? My main doubt was with the glycolic acid and how often I should use it and if it would be good to pair it with vitamin C (which seems to have been answered in the video). I also found articles online saying it is okay to use niacinamide with vitamin C, as new research shows it is beneficial, unlike the previous ones suggested. I was hoping you could help me set up a good morning/nighttime routine with all that information. Thank you! :)
Hey! :) Niacinamide and Vitamin C is a controversial topic. Since you are mainly using the Ordinary products, I recommend sticking to their advice which is keeping Niacinamide and Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) separate. Glycolic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide can be used in the same routine. However, I wouldn't recommend using Glycolic Acid and the Vitamin C Suspension in the same routine because this combination can be quite strong and irritating on the skin. So, I recommend using them in separate evening skincare routines. However, if you would have chosen Mandelic Acid you may be able could use it with the Vitamin C Suspension because it isn't as strong, yet exfoliates the skin. How often you can use an exfoliant depends on your skin. Some people can use it daily whereas others prefer to use it less often like 2-3 times per week. I recommend that you are starting slowly and increase the frequency overtime if needed. I also recommend using Glycolic Acid and Vitamin C in your evening routine but Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide can be used AM and/or PM. So: AM: - Cleanser - Hyaluronic Acid - Niacinamide - (Optional) Moisturiser - SPF PM 1: - Cleanser - Glycolic Acid (2-3 times per week) - (Optional) Hyaluronic Acid - (Optional) Niacinamide - (Optional) Moisturiser PM 2: - Cleanser - Hyaluronic Acid - (Optional) Moisturiser - Vitamin C Suspension (when not using Glycolic Acid) PM 3: - Cleanser - Peeling Solution (once per week or less often) - (Optional) Hyaluronic Acid - (Optional) Moisturiser
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Hey! Thanks a lot for the quick reply! Yeah, vitamin C and niacinamide does seem to be a controversial topic. Thanks for the input! I would just like to ask why the vitamin c goes last in the pm 2 routine? I always thought the last thing should be moisturizer (or SPF which I do need to get a good one :D) Thank you :)
@@MRCMatheus The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension is a thicker 'cream' so to say. Therefore it is recommended to use it after your moisturiser. However, if you should have a very thick moisturiser, you may also just want to do it the other way around! :)
That sounds like a good routine. However, it's important to adjust it based on your personal skin tolerance. If you feel that it's too much exfoliation or if your skin reacts with redness or sensitivities, then reduce the frequency.
In morning i use Cetaphil oil cleanser, rice water with 3% niacinamide toner, the ordinary niacinamide 10% serum, hyaluronic moiz and niacinamide with rice sun screen. Can i use vit c after glycolic cream? What to you suggest to reduce hyperpigmentation dark spots on face?
No, could you list the exact names of the products you have? The order of application seems to be a bit odd. Also, you are using very strong treatments, which can lead to irritation over time. Continuing this way and adding more acids will result in faster irritation.
Hello. Thank you for this video. I recently bought the ordinary Ethylated Ascorbic acid 15% but there's no ph level as your video advise. Can I use it in same routine with glycolic acid 7%?
Yes, it is because it is a water-free solution. Still, once you apply it to your skin, it will become acidic therefore it may lead to irritation. So if you have sensitive skin, don't use them one after another.
Hi, Am I doing it correctly? 😅 AM - pimple soap (salicylic acid) toner (dear klairs) vitamin c serum (melano cc) tinted sunscreen PM - glycolic soap toner (dear klairs) niacinamide (the ordinary) then I watched or read somewhere and done some search in google that aha(glycolic) and bha(salicylic) should not be mixed with vit c and niacinamide. i had tiny bumps in my forehead and im thinking it might be purging? just want to know if im doing my routine wrong or if it's okay. im only 2 weeks in in that routine. pls help :)
Hey! 😊 Overall, this can work, yes. However, it depends on your skin tolerance, and based on that, you need to adjust it. Purging can happen in the beginning; however, it should calm down within a few weeks. If not, the product may not be suitable for you. Also, have you thought about getting a non-exfoliating acid foaming cleanser to use when not using the exfoliant? In case you do not tolerate the daily use of exfoliating acid cleansers. As for Niacinamide and Vitamin C, it's fine to use them the way you want to! 😊
@@georginavictor7445 It depends on your skin concerns, and you may tolerate one better than the other. In that case, I recommend adjusting your skincare routine. :)

Hey! :) Yes, you can use Lactic Acid as well. Start using it 2-3 times per week (once per day) and see how it goes. You can increase the frequency of it if needed!
Oh sorry! I didn't see that you want to use Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin in the same routine... I recommend using either Timeless Vitamin C Serum or The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid. Because both products are Vitamin C products. If you haven't had any problems with either of them you can include Lactic Acid to your routine.
thank you so much for such an informative video, but i wanted to know what should be the time interval between using glycolic acid and vitamin c serum, like after how many minutes i can use vitamin c. regards
Yeah, it has a high pH, and according to studies, when the pH is over 4-4.5, it isn't as effective anymore. But it's probably much better tolerated. Not sure. But honestly, I haven't seen much difference when it comes to those serums. But what I have noticed that when combining them with the low pH cleanser it tends to work better. So the key seems to be using a low pH product before applying the Vitamin C serum. Or let's say an AHA. But also, irritation is higher. So there are pros and cons. I think that the serum works well!
That one will be powerful since the strength of Vitamin C is so high. Best to stick to one with about 15%. Otherwise, alternate and use them on different days. Be careful.

I wonder about p.h. combinations. Like when using OTs Glycolic Acid Toner with a ph of 3.5-3.7 and then following up with Ascorbyl Glycoside 12% (ph 6-7), then wrapping up with Natural Moisturisjng Factors and a Sunscreen 50spf (am routine). So is the distance in ph too big? What happens when ph differs that much? Is it still effective? Should I switch for a Lower ph Vitamin C? Or would it be smarter to go for a Cleanser w/ an exfoliating acid like CeraVe SA Cleanser which seems to be gentler (since it’s a cleanser to be rinsed off and following your explanation ph is irrelevant ). Or should I go for TO’s Salicylic Acid 2% (ph 3.2-4) followed by Ascorbyl Glycoside (ph 3.5-3.7) cause the Ingredients are that good plus matching phs. Great Channel btw really appreciate all the help and content right now. Ace!
Hello Karl, Since these are Vitamin C derivatives, it won't matter as much. So if you use the pure form "Ascorbic Acid" with a low pH (for example, Paula's Choice 15% Vitamin C Booster), it can theoretically help to penetrate better into the skin. However, it also can lead to stinging and burning. But there are more theories about this. Some say it will not matter because if you use a well-formulated product, it isn't easy to get out of the current pH lvl unless you mix them in the palm of your hand. Still, even then, it may take hours before something actually happens. And so that it is not an issue for people using them but only for the chemist formulating the products. On the other hand, the Ordinary recommends not using their peptides after their direct acids (glycolic, lactic, etc.) The concern is that it may break down the peptides into Amino Acids, which is controversial. There is no research about this that I could find, so it's an open question. From my experience, I have never had any irritation while doing this. But not sure about the benefits or negative aspects over the long haul 🤷🏻♀️

Hi..Just wanna ask, m using lactic acid with alpha arbutin at nite...can I use vitamin C suspension with it...also using caffeine solution in the morning
Yes, that's fine! However, using Lactic Acid and Vitamin C Suspension in the same routine may lead to stinging or burning (it doesn't have to happen) because this can be a potent combination. Use the Vitamin C Suspension only in the evening. Caffeine Solution and Alpha Arbutin can be used in the morning and/or evening. You can also alternate between Lactic Acid and Vitamin C Suspension in the PM.
What Vitamin C do you use? Use your Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid in different routines, do not use them together. Do you just use The Ordinary products? What Salicylic Acid do you use?
Hey! :) Use a moisturizer that's suitable for your skin type or one that contains Natural Moisturizing Factors like The Ordinary or NIOD moisturizer :)
I have to wait 30-60 min before applying one step to the next??? that doesn't seem very realistic for a morning routine when you gotta head out to work. also, is the only issue with using AHA and Vit C that it can be burning? they don't cancel out like AHA and retinol right? sorry new to all this
Hey :) It says it's 30-60 seconds. 😉 The waiting time should demonstrate that you need to wait for your skincare product to absorb into the skin before moving on to the next step, to ensure proper layering. Sometimes, issues can arise when a product has not fully absorbed into the skin. Generally, yes, as both treatments can be potent when used in higher concentrations, leading to irritation, such as stinging, burning, or general sensitivities. And no, they do not cancel each other out.

Hi Can i use vitamin C facewash with lactic acid within a gap of 30 mnts Like first use vitamin c face wash after 30 mnts apply lactic acid and after 30 mints sequentially i apply tretinione?
I believe that using both can be too irritating, as it may still sensitize the skin even though the pH will normalize after a certain amount of time. It is best to use tretinoin on days when you are not using lactic acid, or to avoid lactic acid entirely, particularly during the first few weeks of tretinoin treatment.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial hyyy tysomuch can i use tretion in PM and lactic acid in AM?? What you suggest and can i use the vitamin C facewash I'm not talking about vitamin C serum .. plsss guide me🥺
@@zujajakhan5069 It is best not to use the lactic acid product, or to only use it on days when you are not using the tretinoin, as I previously mentioned. Tretinoin should be sufficient for your needs. Additionally, using a vitamin C face wash should not cause any problems.
Hii ! I'm really confused because i have Minimalist PHA 3% alcohol free toner and plum 15 vitamin C serum so can i use them together ??? Hope u will reply early !!!
@@hinasohaib1479 No. Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid are both exfoliating acids, so it's best to use only one of them or alternate between them. Avoid using them in the same routine or on the same day.
Hey! :) For how long have you been using the Night Peel already? How often do you use the Night Peel during the week? And how's your skin responding to it? You could use the Vitamin C in the same routine when using the Night Peel, however, it contains 15% of Glycolic Acid which can lead to sensitive when combining it with a Vitamin C. If you can I recommend using them separately.
Glycolic Acid and Klairs Vitamin C serum, yes. Glycolic Acid and Niacinamide serum, yes. However, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and Niacinamide is controversial... See here: How to Layer Vitamin C and Niacinamide Serum: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sSNUoiwKjHM.html

Hi, can i use glycolic acid of the ordinary and ascorbic acid of the ordinary both the same day? Please answer please And if i can then please tell me at what times and if I can’t please tell me how do I manage my skincare routine I like keeping them together on one day. And if things go wrong can this combination do reaction like fast aging signs on skin?
Yes, in that case, you can use Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin in the morning and Glycolic Acid in the evening. Just keep in mind to adjust the frequency of Glycolic Acid accordingly to your skin needs, which means starting with 2-3 times a week in your evening skincare routine and increasing it if needed to every other day or daily. AM: Cleanser Ascorbic Acid and Alpha Arbutin (SPF when exposed to the sun) PM: Cleanser Glycolic Acid (Moisturizer if needed)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial THANKYOUU SO MUCH MELIISSA YOU ARE HUGE HELP! I just wanted to ask one more thing that why my face gets so sticky after applying the ordinary glycolic acid?
@@teehee4518 I meant that if you are using too much Glycolic Acid, it can feel sticky on the skin. Use less, and it will feel less sticky. The only side effect that it can have is when using it too often throughout the week, and you can come across stinging/burning or even weird looking pimples.
I do not recommend using the suspension in the morning because it has a high amount of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and does not absorb well into the skin. Therefore my advice would be to alternate evenings.
