Can India help the UK create the next Silicon Valley and be a tech superpower?

The U.K. hopes to remake the region between the cities of Oxford and Cambridge into the next Silicon Valley. But Britain needs to attract more skilled talent to its shores if it’s going to become a tech power.
India is the third largest startup ecosystem in the world, and it has plenty of tech talent.
“India has been an engineering global talent hub for the world over recent years,” said Amarjit Singh, the CEO of India Business Group, a consulting firm that supports deals between the two countries.
“Sixty-five percent of the country’s 1.4 billion population is under the age of 35,” Singh added, pointing to the potential economic benefit of a young workforce.
However, immigration remains a highly contested topic in British politics, and it’s unclear how an influx of Indian talent would be received locally.
Watch the video above to learn how India can help the U.K. with its ambition to become a tech superpower.

They earlier mocked India's space programs until we amply demonstrated to the world what we could do with a limited budget. More recently they even doubted Cowin which turns out to be the most advanced vaccine tracker in the world and quoted it as a pretext for mandating quarantines even for the vaccinated. They rarely acknowledge the strive that India has made on the digital infrastructure front and never let go an opportunity to down play the country and yet they have the audacity to seek India's help on building their tech hubs. Its time Indians build India rather than take such baits.

@tstcikhthys
@tstcikhthys 11 месяцев назад
@@Salmanul_ Exactly. India is doing absolutely nothing on this front, yet somehow has pipe dreams about becoming a "superpower" in every field. Here's how they could though: - Allow dual citizenship and convert all OCIs back to citizens, for one. - Then, actually go on a Rwanda-style cleaning spree (instead of doing lip service to Swacch Bharat) to clean up the filth. - Then, restrict cars and motorcycles and designate more road space to pedestrians, bikes, and bus rapid transit. - Get rid of income taxes completely, and unify all GST rates to something like 20% and put it on every single item without exceptions. Then, just give a rebate of the poverty line to everyone legally living in the country so that day-to-day stuff is not inflated. - Spend the increase in money that's likely going to be generated on fixing up the pipes in cities so that clean drinking water comes out of the tap for everyone 24/7. Most of these things wouldn't even cost much money, but they'd radically improve living conditions in India and would make people consider India as a legitimate place they'd want to live. Everything else can go from there.

Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) was the 16th largest bank in the US, and it wasn't subject to the most strict controls. How many banks actually are subject to those controls, besides the big four? Any bank could suffer a run and fail, and if that happens to a community level or even state level bank it probably won't upset the national economy or ecosystem of banks, but any multi-state bank should be more closely watched.

I dont think Indians would move to UK, 1. UK not in EU anymore so no schengen Visa 2. High cost of living and taxes. If you earn $30k in UK per year you would hardly save anything whereas in India you would be able to save approx $15k - $20k. 3. Public Universities of Germany and many other eu countries are free while that of UK are not

@balsdsa Год назад
Reposting the message from above 1) EU economic stagnation in the past 15 years. Since 2008 there was 0 economic growth. I think just recently EU as a whole got above 2008 levels. 2) UK is still leading in terms of education and research. Look who made the EU vaccine as an example (it was imperial college London with Astrazeneca Germany), no poland, no netherlands, no denmark. Compare how many universities are in top 100 globally from UK and how many from EU. 3) UK is still the tech and financial hub of European continent. Just last week the AI company c3 ai announced they are moving their headquarters from Paris to London.

Apart from an improvement in India’s economic confitions, the biggest reason is the health of parents. The standard of education in India is also rising every decade, and the Indian tech universities like IITs and IIIT's are producing tech wizards. The only problem is that just 10% of the STEM graduates are really employable without any training. That means 250K in a year, and this mumber is increasing as education in India is going through a revolutionary upheaval due to improved internet connections and increasing tech literacy. By 2030, India will produce an army of really employable engineers. Both the USA and the EU will need more and more Indian tech workers as their young population isn't taking up STEM education. I think there is a huge potential in Indonesia and Africa as well, only if people are ready to provide the right environment.

*There is a very specific and a systematic reason as to why in the 50+ years of the Internet and the Software industry, it's always been the American company that has gone to become a global, publicly traded, and a 100B+ in valuation company. There are 7 continents and 207 sovereign nations in the world, but when you observe your personal and professional digital life, it's been surrounded with American software products. One of the key reasons to this is the INDIAN people from India. The US realized this in the late 80s and early 90s that if they want to be a global power in the Internet and the Software world, they need INDIANS. The result is in front of us. Some of the largest global companies have Indian CEOs. And some of the large non-tech companies have Indian CEOs, such as FedEx, Starbucks, ex-Mastercard, ex-PepsiCo, etc. The UK knows this. Germany knows this. Japan knows this. The UAE (Dubai) knows this. Singapore knows this. And pretty much every other country. The problem is they are just too late to realize this.*

Firstly Indians STEM graduates don't need to emigrate since ample opportunities opening up back home. India is already fifth largest economy way forward to be $10 trillion economy in next 12-15 years. India is already IT power house & working to become engineering hub with large strides in core engineering & manufacturing in top sectors like aerospace, space tech, heavy machineries, marine & ship building, Robotics & IOT, defense etc. Now considering UK that's an interesting case a Country that is moving backwards. UK welcomed Pakistani Islamic fanatics resulting in spread of fundamental Sunni elements throughout Britain. Interestingly we find an Islamic Nation Saudia Arabia liberalizing it's society against which UK has been adopting Orthodoxy. We find British Govt lacdasical approach as witnesses during Blasphemy case when a specially abled white teenager was targeted for what Islamists considered disrespect to Quran. Further British Govt has encouraged islamic fanatics targeting Indians. We can sense British leadership lacking pride in British identify will submit to Islamic fanatics and will adopt Sharia law to become Next Afghanistan rather than IT superpower. Indian STEM talent has witnessed this radicalization of UK and has been dropping emmigration plans to UK.

Whilst this video focuses mostly on technology, I think the challenge of recreating a Silicon Valley is multifaceted. For one thing, I think the consumer culture in the US is unique. Entrepreneurs there almost take for granted the environment where people are keen on trying out their latest creations. In the US, anything goes it seems, and that I envy. Most tech ecosystems elsewhere are limited to the narrow needs of the consumers such as edtech or fintech (where I'm from for example). Tech and talent is only part of the picture.
@colbr6733
@colbr6733 Год назад
True this is commonly overlooked with regard to the US, I have also found parts of Asia have a real aspirational culture and energy which isn't prevalent in the EU and UK, where it is much more conservative. One aspect of UK product development culture by comparison to the US, EU environment that I have seen over the years is an ability to turn problem solving into a very powerful dynamic within the development/tech group itself. I have seen this totally transform the company's ability to cultivate new markets. This isn't to say product development elsewhere is inferior such as here in the Netherlands where I live and work, but it is different.
@TheB657
@TheB657 Год назад
@@colbr6733 I agree. This why any “New Silicon Valley!” or similar innovation initiatives are doomed to failure as soon as they begin.
