Can IONIQ Electric EV Now Handle A 1,000 Mile UK Road Trip... With No Planning?

Before selling my (treasured!) Hyundai IONIQ Electric car I'm took it on a final 1,000-mile UK road trip! I went around England, to Bedford, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Oxford... and into Wales, to Cardiff...
Given it's now 2019 and EV rapid charger networks are meant to be improving, I decided to do this trip WITHOUT any forward planning. My only prep step was to sign up for BP Chargemaster's POLAR network for the first time. (That is a bit of a faff, as you get a RFID card... mailed to you a few days later through the post!)
I made a critical video over a year ago concluding this kind of long distance travel was difficult in the UK. This is especially so with the IONIQ's CCS charging port - and lack of CCS type chargers back in early 2018.
Has anything changed with the growth of networks beyond Ecotricity's Electric Highway, like IONITY, Instavolt, POLAR and others? Watch to find out how I got on... and what issues I encountered!
This longer trip provided a great chance to test the efficiency of my IONIQ... As always with this car, I was pleasantly surprised, and show my overall result for the 1,000 miles (1,600 km) at the end of the video.

Duncan - interesting to see that you could make an unplanned trip such as this without significant frustration with offline chargers. This does demonstrate evidence of the infrastructure improvements in the UK (I wouldn’t think you could accomplish 1000 miles without planning). Thanks for taking us along! Heres to hoping that you pick up an EV - after your move - and carry on your message in Denmark!

Yes things have improved greatly and continue to do so, I have no issues going anywhere I want with my Ioniq. To get the most out of Polar Plus I do try to plan my trips so that I only use them , I get my membership free with OVO energy so the average cost to charge is £1.20. The other good thing is that the latest update to the Ioniqs sat nave system is that it now shows live charging status updates (little green light) of the Polar plus (and some other providers) chargers as you head for them. Anybody looking for a used Ioniq should grab yours fast they are a simply a brilliant car.

Having only just found your channel not long ago and being a brand new Ioniq owner have loved watching your videos about the Ioniq. I hope you get another one or maybe even a Kona or eNiro or the new Soul EV. Anything but a Tesla as there are plenty of RU-vidrs with Teslas nice to find channels like yours that have other EVs. As I also follow you on Twitter and recently posted a pic of a new charger near where I live in Tasmania look forward to finding out what EV you do get after moving. Luckily though Denmark is pretty close to the UK so you can go back to visit from time to time. :)

Hi, always enjoy watching your video’s especially as I am an Ioniq owner, I have gone through my menu’s and logged on to my home WiFi directly from the dash. Functions. Question, have you ever tried doing the “Update” again via dash function ? Hyundai say its just a case of following instructions on screen…not tried yet.

how long did the trip take time wise charging and how many stops did you make to charge

Would be interesting to calculate the pence per mile rate on a non planned out long trip using the motorway network. Apart from environmental benefits the idea of running a EV is to reduce consumption costs. A fossil car would be cheaper to run as you can find a fuel station off the motorway more easily than a rapid charge point. If it was truly a non planned trip you wouldn’t risk leaving the motorway for a top up.
