Great lunch time viewing here in the UK. Mustie, you must the most patient, positive guy I have ever come across with a fantastic way of finding interest in everything. A sincere thank you from us all.
There are “educators” and there are teachers. Mustie, you’re a teacher extraordinaire. I always learn real world, useful tips and tricks from your videos. Thank you
You coulda fixed it. All it needed was a top end kit, a bottom end kit, a gasket set, a carb rebuilt kit, a water pump, a new flywheel, magneto, plug wire, plug, shift linkage, gear box rebuild kit, prop, recoil spring, recoil handle, pull cord, throttle cable, choke cable, and kill switch and it would have been ready to go. Good try though!! Stay safe Mustie, We love your videos!!
Keep forgetting to click like... :( You don't seem like a guy worried about likes or begging for subscribers which is rare breed lately but most channels now mention it at the end reminding me to click.... In my eyes your a teacher and a great one at that. Thank you for keeping us both entertained and educated. :)
Mustie: That isn't a ROOMMATE! That's a dang HOTEL!!! LOL Too funny. I have had SO MANY yard tools end up looking like this over the years so this is a really good episode for me! Thank you.
Thanks Mustie for taking our minds off the grim reality of life in America for an hour at a clip. You truly deserve a Nobel Peace Prize for fixing broken stuff!!
"There's a bright side to this..." There sure was, you got to exercise destructive impulses on something that wasn't going to suffer from it. That engine wasn't terminally ill, it came into the shop as a cadaver.
Mustie you make my weekend! It’s so sad to admit that I can’t wait for a Sunday, just to be able to get a new video from you trying to save an old engine! Best wishes from Australia!
Hello Mustie, I like your channel. I come from Berlin and don't miss a video of you. It is a pleasure for me to see how you can get something going again.
53:40 chasin' rabbits! I had a rescue cat that got stuck in a transport truck in Vancouver and got transported to Ontario. He used to have nitemares and he'd howl in his sleep and thrash about. I'd pull him close and pet him awake and as soon as he woke up he'd start purring knowing he was safe.....he stopped having them after a while......
hey thanks for these videos. i was able fix my MTD snow thrower, a garbage picked generator, and Forest Gump’s Snapper lawn mower after watching your videos. I’ve saved quite a bit of money, and profited some beer money after the knowledge I learned here. We know cars here in Detroit, but small carbureted engines are a dying breed.
Am I the only one who waits all day every Sunday for their kids to be in bed to sit down and relax and watch a mustie1 video before another work week, thanks mustie1 definitely my favorite channel on RU-vid and a stress reliever for more then just me I'm sure
It was not a total waste of time or a failure. You got over 250K views. I watched the entire video and enjoyed every minute. Entertainment is where you find it! Thank you.
Watching these videos is a real lesson in patience, laughing at your setbacks, perseverance, etc. All good life lessons....!! Edit: and the fact that Mustie said that if this had been a rare, valuable engine, he could have saved it, is totally mind blowing
This session of Mustie therapy is just what I needed to banish the worries after a troublesome couple of days. Thanks Mustie for doing things like you do.
I believe that white powder is the mechanical equivalent to the "Magic Smoke" of electronics. The extra effort to take it apart justifies the years of storage.
Those little "Gamefisher" outboards were just rebranded "Eska" air-cooled outboard motors that were also sold under the house brands of some other retailers such as Montgomery Wards "Sea King", as well as under the actual brand of Eska. If I remember correctly, either the early or the smaller displacement versions were strictly air cooled while the latter or larger displacement versions had the "Mickey Mouse" partial water cooling system. I also remember that Eska's horsepower ratings were highly exaggerated when compared to that of a comparably rated outboard from any other manufacturer. Although Eska outboards were made in the USA, their construction "and reputation" fell more in line with cheap imported products of that era. So much so that most consumers just assumed they were a cheap import. Prior to that, Eska had primarily been a manufacturer of products such as sand cast and stamped steel farm toys and had manufacturing agreements with Ertl.
i just fixed one of these for a customer. i second the "highly overrated hp" figures. I knew just by looking at it it would be noisy and slow. boy was i right. a 6hp Evinrude on my little 10' test boat did 24 mph. this one? barely planed off and did 12mph haha!
U seem to know what your talking about I have same exact motor in video 7.5 and I need gap size new plug and online fuel filter but don't know year or model or were to get parts u have any suggestions
The sound of the Porsche in this bonus footage.... mustie1 is giving his good friend redemption for putting the coil on backwards on his pressure washer. Honorable men!
I love these videos. Watching them is just like when I was a boy and hung around a garage and watched with fascination and curiosity as the men worked on different cars. I was the one who keep asking "why" and "how" ! I must have been a nuisance to them ... thankfully they put up with me. I wish they were still around. I would love to talk with them as an adult. Thanks for the video Mustie 1!
I have no idea why this is so entertaining. I could be watching people restore a Bugatti or a Spitfire or restoring art. Somehow, this is just better. Don't go changing, legend. Love your work.
I purchased a Sears Ted Williams 5.5 hp outboard back in the early 70's. It was very similar to that one had a Tecumseh 2 stroke. It was actually my first brand new outboard! I was about 16 years old at the time. Brings back memories.
Years ago I was able to resurrect a Sears 5 hp outboard for a friend that got knocked off the transom by a hidden log in a shallow freshwater lake that sat completely submerged for a year before they found it. It wasn't bad at all compared to that one. My guess is yours got dunked in salt water then they let it sit to dry out without adding any lube to the inside of the engine causing all the corrosion when it dried out.
For a piston in my experience j.b weld didn't help my motorcycle had a piston that was cracked in half i filled it with jb weld and after a minute of it running it cracked all over again.
This poor motor has seen better days. It looked as it was under water for just a little bit. Darren it was good to see you trying to bring it back, but in the end there was just no saving it. Wow lived the destruction at the end.
Detroit diesels have twelve point bolts holding the starters on and caterpillar uses twelve point bolts to hold down their injectors. But I definitely hear you man, not very common fasteners
Off initial impressions this outboard looks healthier than that free salt water driven Evinrude motor from a few weeks back. I still have PTSD from the sound of that outboards prop 😂
Until you broke the ear off the connecting rod, I was expecting to hear that little beast purring like brand new by the end of the video. Sometimes breaking things can be fun too.
That motor would make a great anchor ! Thanks Mustie it was interesting and entertaining, I must admit I gave would have given up on that motor about half way through, LOL,
There is 50 minutes of babble about an old boat anchor. Last 4 min is troubleshooting a car. This guy is a starter. In engineering school I discovered that there are three kinds of people. Starters, finishers, and, DO'ERS. DO'ERS are very rare. Starters and finishers are a dime a dozen.
Twenty minutes in the video and I'd say melt it down and start over! 😊 Looks like someone took a brush and some house paint to it..... well forget the brush, they just poured the paint on it! Now I'll watch the rest of the video. Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Love seeing you bring old outboards back to life Mustie, not so keen on seeing you destruct them so lets see you work on that other one sooner rather than later.
I can be absolutely sure that if you had got that piston unseized, it would have been running by the end of the vid. Great job Mustie1, loved the teardown.
I have had decent luck freeing stuck engines by filling the cylinder completely full of diesel or ATF. Knock the porcelain out of the spark plug and weld/thread a grease zerk into the spark plug body. With the head tightened down, hook up the grease gun and start pumping carefully, knowing a grease gun is capable of 6000 psi+. Whatever moves will move, and whatever is weak will break.
Thank you for going the whole way! You have so many times stopped and didn't finish so to see you take it to a full conclusion was satisfying to say the least. Again thank you and I loved the final outcome.
Mustie ,,, you are just so damn much fun to watch! My problem this time was that I sat down in my chair for a bite to eat and turned you on to see the new video That I look forward too. To much rats nest while I was eating ,,,, I had to pause you! Does your family ever laugh 😂 and shake their heads about the great number of crazies that love to watch you work????? I feel like I am working on a government job sometimes,,, one man working and thousands watching!!!!!!
It’s a Tecumseh engine for sure, but depending on the year, it could have actually been built by a company called Eska, who also built the Ted Williams motors for Sears. Too bad it was too far gone.
Tecumseh built powerheads for Eska. Tillotson carbs. I ended up with a 3.5hp version I got running with just a carb cleanup and an impeller. The 3.5 has no gearshift...if it is running the prop is spinning. The mount allows full rotation, so you can spin it 180 degrees for reverse.
Gidday from Oz, You have nothing to worry about from COVID 19. Hantavirus is a different story. You and mice have a very toxic relationship. Please wear a mask when playing with your furry friends. We like having you around.
Well Mustie lad, I'd call that a successful failure! Plenty of "shits and giggles " here ! Thanks for that, tears are rolling down my cheeks right now ! Made my day.
Mustie1, I love watching your content and really enjoy the work you do, but if they do ever invent smell-o-vision I would pay to keep it OFF of your videos.
When you're eating a bowl of cereal with your Sunday morning Musty videos and he blows mouse nests out and you panic cause you got an open bowl of cereal.
Not much of a loss on this one. As an outboard those air cooled one lunger motors are noisey and shaky. Water cooled twin is the way to go. But the educational benefit of a good engine autopsy is worth it! Another great video Mustie1!
I have two of those, 5 HP and 7.5. The 7.5 is branded as a Ted Williams edition and it's older than yours. The 5 is even older, it's made with no hood at all and it just says Sears on it. The powerheads are Tecumseh, and the lower units are Eska. The water pump just cools the exhaust leg. I didn't pay a cent for either of mine, and I got them both running for next to nothing. They're really common but collectors sneer at them so they're practically free.
Halfway through this video, I thought "that's trash". But Mustie soldiered on. It ended up being educational. I would never have had the interest in continuing.
