Good video. I've put about 3500 miles on my Himalayan over the past 10 months. A very good portion of those miles have been dirt/gravel. I'd rate the stock MT60's as an 80/20 tire. After around 1000 miles I put on a set of Shinko 244's, which are a true 50/50 tire, in my opinion. I've had the bike on some REALLY rugged Jeep trails, and that tractor engine, combined with great traction from the 244's pulled me over everything like nothing was going on. They're also more confidence inspiring in loose gravel as well. In 45 year of riding I'd have to say that the Himalayan is the most adaptable, well rounded, and all around best damn motorcycle I've ever owned. And, I have to agree with your assessment of it's capabilities. It's great for anything other than high speed interstate. As a country back road exploration machine, that's capable of going pretty much anywhere, I can't think of anything I'd rather be on. It's amazing that it feels like a big bike on the road (comfortable and stable), and yet doesn't feel like a big bike off-road (manageable and easy to ride), if that makes any sense. Have fun and be safe!

Thanks so much for this review! I am planning an adventure trip with my brother in a few weeks. We will be riding in North Alabama and Western Georgia. These are exactly the roads we will be on. He and I both have 2020 Himalayans. His is Sleet and mine is Granite. This was a brilliant and honest review that confirms my thoughts about what we can expect. Well done sir, well done!

I love your reviews on the Himalayan. Sir, I also request you to mention that this bike is designed and manufactured by Indians in India. Though the Royal Enfield was a British Company originally, they sold off their brand to an Indian company and they sold it off to Eicher.

Took my 2020 on the TAT in August. Performed amazingly well with 75lbs of gear. Kept up with two KLR 650’s. Very nimble. Went through knee deep water crossing with no issues either. Completed engineers pass as well. I ran TKC 80’s. Had my service done in Colorado they couldn’t get a new rear tkc so they slapped on Dunlop trailmax... not recommended for the western sand. Difficult but managed. Otherwise that tire is extremely grippy and great on dirt and paved roads. Also took off the wind screen. Felt more stable on the faster western roadways. Keep that chain lubed with the proper tension. My buddy’s fell off in Moab, broke at the master link and luckily it just glided off. Keep up the great videos!

Hello I love your reviews on the Himalayan more truely spoken. I like to say I had a Suzuki DR400 and it was only good for 55mph and it was the same as the Himalayan. After looking at your reviews I would recommend the Himalayan over the DR400 because it is no faster on motorways. I like your reviews based on I’m tired of these people who ride sport bike and expect the Himalayan to do the speeds of 1000 sport bikes. Lets see how much luggage a sport bike can carry or go off the road. Keep the reviews coming cheers wayne.

That was very informative and enjoyable to watch, one can hear that you enjoy riding the bike! I do agree with you, just a little bit more of oompfh and a sixth gear for more comfortable highway cruising would be nice, but I'd say the Himalayan is more at home on the back roads and this is where she shines in my opinion. Just enjoying the scenery and chugging along. Sadly I don't think RE will uprate the engine in the foreseeable future. I can't wait for mine to arrive, apparently the currently wait for the delivery here in Germany.

I like your content and presentation. I will be picking up a shiny new 2021 Euro5 Himalayan next Saturday. The latest model has an improved (firmer) seat, better rear rack, slightly improved knee clearance from the front racks and a pointer device that links to satnav technology on your smartphone to show you which way to turn while your phone stays safe in your pocket! It also has just slightly more power output - not enough to be a game-changer but enough to notice. I cant wait to test it on what we here in England call "Green Lanes".

Another enjoyable video Ronin. I am trying to hunt out all your videos as I have only been aware of your channel for two or three weeks. I always feel relaxed when I watch you ride and it is obvious you just love being on this bike. A note to all riders who watched the first part of this video on country roads and back roads, thinking that you could ride those roads much faster, you`re missing the point and if you want to live to Ronin`s age ( no disrespect because I am older than you Ronin), just slow down and find true motorcycling pleasure.

Highways are for people who are in a hurry to go from point A to point B. If you're not, take the smaller roads, enjoy the scenery and the ride. And a good pair of "knobblys" is almost a must on TAT.

Great road test Ronin and very useful comments. One point about the hiway or motorway riding as we call it in UK. It definitely would help having that extra gear no question. Speed and motorcycles are a given and most folk probably want that awesome power to cruise at 90mph plus. For me , riding the hi way at 55 to 65 comfortable and safe is a real pleasure- you can take in the scenery and surrounding country much more which makes the Himalayan a solid choice. Sure if Royal Enfield introduced a 550cc and extra gear that would be perfect. So slower hi way riding gets a thumbs up from me. ( nice off road work by the way) Keep up the good work dude🏍👍

I was thinking 650 too. But you’ve got a great point. Build it to 500 and add a gear!! Perfect. I’ve had mine on I-10 in Florida. It’s working darn hard at 75 mph. I engine break a lot.

G'day Ol' Man Ronin, I enjoyed your video on the RE Himalayan . I have been interested in this bike for several years now and now that it has ABS and fuel injection it is definitely on the cards. Here in Australia it is sold for$7,490.00 AU I just have to sell my Classic Honda Magna VF750 first. Thanks again.

Thank you for a thorough review of the capabilities of the Himalayan :-) A big bore kit (462cc) is available which gives more oomph and torque. However, when you figure in the cost of that plus a Powertronics Controller ECU (necessary) plus an upgraded clutch (desirable) you may have been better starting with an entirely different adventure motorcycle. If the Himalayan (as it comes, out of the box) meets your requirements for an adventure motorcycle then, Hurrah!, you have found your ideal bike. If not, there are other machines out there.

@@OlManRonin I think it is better to enjoy the bike for what it is. After 2,000 miles of running in it gets noticeably better and by 3,000 miles you will absolutely love it. P.S. I put a sticker on my Himalayan that says "Your bike may be *fast* but my bike can go EVERYWHERE!" :-)

Ol' Man Ronin Forgot to mention. The seemingly go-to replacement tires for the Himalayan are the Mitas - E07 I still have the Perreli’s on my 2019 Himalayan, but researched replacements. Brett Tzacs on MotoTrek YOuTube page did a review on them as well.

Yep, totally agree on the 6th gear. One terrain you didn't cover was 'deep sand' I recently did a part of TET-NL with the Himy it has long stretches of deep sand. And.... it struggles. In my opinion it's not so much the tires but more the weight of the bike. Long story short. I burned up my clutch plates.

Great review. I am a big fan of the Royal Enfield Himalayan too. Here in Brazil It's got a bad reputation though. Some people say that its dashboard has problems with the sealing and even the engine has shown some problems related to knock. Anyway, I really liked your truly and honest review. Congratulations. I'm thinking about a DR650 and think it would be about the same or little bit stronger on the highway. After seat and windshield mods I think you get a pretty good all around bike. DR is better off road I'm sure. Most people say the DR650 is no problem on the highway. About 70 lbs lighter is one reason I would like a DR over the RE. Can lower it to 33" seat height with the factory lowering option. Just need a kick stand. 👍 Great video here. Thanks for showing.

Hi o'l man. I have owened my Himalayan here in the UK for 18 months and have loved every minute of it. The only downside for me was the seat, and i have been riding motorcycles for 54 years. Back in the day my B.S.A, Nortons and all the other british makes had seats made for sitting on and not just looking good. I found a place in Idaho called Seat Concepts who make a foam and cover for the Himmy whic is wider ang flatter so had it sent over and fitted here and it's great. I also own a 650 Interceptor which i fitted with a sidecar and it's a great combo when set up correctly. Keep right side up and ride safe.👍

Interesting tests and comments. *Ride With Warro* has several Royal Enfields in the past, including the Himalayan he is running at the moment. He recently purchased a Honda CT-125 and does lots of trials similar to the road surfaces you showed in these tests. I think the top speed would disappoint you and be unsuitable for US Highways, but all the other roads and tracks would be well within its capabilities. *A Retired Okie in Thailand* is also in the process of doing lots of deep analysis of their capabilities. Would be great to see you on one. I believe they're due this month in the US (November) for the early guys who booked with their dealers. It's a real upgrade from the earlier disappointing second hand ("con job") 1967 CT90 Hunter/Trail you discussed in the Oct 25 video.

highway crusing speed in is 60mph so it is adequate over here,there are some new 6speed engine royal enfield is working on and we might see it in coming 2 to 3 years happy riding!!

It takes about 5000 miles for the bike to completely set in.Though it readily jumps to redline at 6500 the stroke length just doesn't justify running the bike past 5000 a lot.It smooths out a lot after 4 or 5 thousand miles.Also the booster plug trick stops the preignition rattle which contributes to vibration in some conditions.I made my own for $5.Goes right in line with the air intake sensor and gives a much needed 5% enrichment.

Just found you and this review. Excellent. I've been riding a Ural sidecar with dog for two years and have wanted a Himalayn. Love Heindle engineering in Eaton if you know them. Ended up buying a 2018 Honda cb500x a month ago. Interesting ride for me as I had not been on a two wheel bike since 1984. Have you ridden this Honda. I already want to change front sprocket. How are you going to carry luggage for TAT? Have you heard of the Trans Wisconsin trail? Hope to do part of it next year. Recently did some with the Ural.

Thanks for the comment, no I haven't ridden the Honda CB 500X, yeah I feel the Honda would be a better ON-ROAD bike, but as far as off-road. The Himalayan has it beat IMHO. Luggage? I will be mounting panniers this winter as well as both soft and hard luggage. As fae as the TWT yes, maybe some day!

Agree with you about a 450-500 cc / hotter cam rather than going to a twin 650. You need a bit more HP to pull that higher gearing of an overdrive ratio. I have the same issue with my DRZ400 with a 5 speed wide ratio gearbox. I have to keep it at 70 mph rather than 60 mph in 5th otherwise it falls off the power curve. A 440-470 kit works better with the wide ratio gear box I am told.

The 6th gear wouldn't help much at top speed. Because at top speed the engine is around 6500rpm wich is where the peak power is. Making that 5th gear ratio just perfect for the engine's power. A higher ratio would only help with fuel economy and quieter engine while cruising.

Agree if you just added a 6th gear, but I would do what Harley Davidson did when they went from 4 speed to 5 speed and then again from 5 speed to 6 speed transmissions, increase it through the drive train and the entire power band changes and upper top end increases within the same rpm scale. 😀

Fond of royal Enfields, but thinking NC750 dct for touring and a classic 350 or 500 for local pottering. The Himalayan looks good but I'd rather two different bikes. If I was sticking to one bike the Himalayan would be the choice.

I'm split between the two, I definitely like the features of the KTM and horse power, but interested in the Him's off road. But for getting into Adv and touring I'm leaning towards the KTM for now, but my second might be a Him if they can boost it's highway capability a little more. I feel like the 390 is a little more travel friendly in that way because I can keep up with traffic, and enough capability offroad to start. I have a lot of open road to travel to get where I want to go. If I didn't the Him hands down.

@@deltabluesdavidraye got my KTM, and one of my co workers husbands got a Him, so we might have to bike swap for a day. All in all as a starter not displeased with my purchase. I'm planning on adjusting the gearing to give me a little more low end on the first few gears as they do have a lower gear set out. I've been doing a lot of research, and for what I am riding the KTM is just edging it out. But that doesn't take away from the Him at all, this was a great review, and I agree a sixth gear would help, but overall still a solid bike.

Nice fair test. Problem is that if you want to lower the revs and still crack 70mph it will have to have a bit more power to go with it otherwise it will run out of steam. For what I want to do though it would be fine, just as you found.

agreed, but if they closed the gap on the gearing a bit in the upper gears, they could add a 6th and still have a slight boost in top end without sacrificing low gear torque. My comments where fir the guys who want it to be US highway compatible. But I wholeheartedly think the bike is perfect as its built for me and what I will use it for. Love your videos and riding. When you put new tyres on for your trip, will you be adding spacers to your mudguards to allow for a bit for clearance in mud you may come across?

@@OlManRonin I removed the top front guard and used its spacers and bolts to raise the lower guard 20mm for more clearance over the tyre.

When are you going to do the TAT? I live in NM and am thinking about switching my KLR650 to a Himmy and maybe doing part of the TAT too. I'm 70 years old with a garage full of motorcycles including the new Honda Trail 125, which some of the guys on the forum are going to do the TAT on, but I think I'd like bit more capable bike.

Your comments on each scenario are very much appreciated. Reguarding the limitation on the highway, is it purely the power of the motor ( or lack there of) and need for a six speed transmission that gives you pause or doe the suspension need serious upgrades ( I would immediately replace the front end with inverted forks and a wider triple tree set up to fit a 120 front tire as I hate skinny tires that get could in the western state's rain groves - trust me when your tire get caught in a California or Nevada rain groove it will wake you up real fast.) *But - is the frame strength solid enough to handle a INT 650 motor with six speed gear box?

Don't know how I found you, but we're here. Nice country side man. but Royal Enfield have 650 twins, now that would be nice in the Himalayan. At 7.5 Gs here in oz on the road man what a bike. just a thought A BMW cruiser service cost $2,400.00 put that in perspective in relationship to top in speed. from one grey haired bastard to another. up yours. in the nicest possible way. ;-)

Toss a Shinko 244 on the rear and a Shinko 241 on the front and you'll be golden for the TAT. If you can stiffen the suspension. Also put a few spacers on the front fender to raise it an inch and a half to two inches. Give the tire a chance to clear itself of mud and rocks.

Still watching the video but i can tell you, royal enfield atleast before they came up with himalayan and their 650s have known to have high torque, low high end. They were bikes to enjoy the ride at relaxed pace. 350cc version was most popular, but neither 350cc nor 500cc are western highway speed capable, no wonder royal enfield had to come up with improved engines before going international and all out targeting western markets.

There is a 477cc big bore and a 463cc big bore. You will have to get a power commander as well. But the torque will increase and move to 4500 rpm. You can make 70 with less strain.

By Good Shoes I mean good tires. I've never had to dismount the Himalayan and push, but I have had to renegotiate a few obstacles because I needed knobbier tires in that particular area. Cgeck out my latest video on Moto Camping sites released today!!

Love my Himalayan.Now a homemade booster plug inline with the airintake sensor stopped a lot of the top end rattle .Most of that is preignition .Idle is better. Low end torque much improved.Gas mileage not really negatively affected by the 5% enrichment.The thermistor cost a few dollars and the connecter came from a junk metro .Put the thermistor in the document box..

The pirellis are great tires.I put a kenda 80-20 on front after 6000.A p175 55 r17 car tire works in back.I have a velorex sidecar on mine.I geared it down 4% for that with the rear tire swap.

Tec bike are doing an upgrade camshaft for the Himalayan, they claim a 5hp increase, avaliable around the end of the year.

Himalayan was made keeping in mind the requirements of Himalayan terrians & roads such as Mana pass (5545m) in Uttrakhand, India & khardungla pass(5359) in laddakh, India. Himalayan is not made for highway cruising.

Great video. Do you think if RE raised it to 450cc & gave her an extra gear that it would hurt lower gears, in effect changing her behavior in dirt?

Not at all, when manufacturers add a gear, they compensate the lower gears to mesh equally with the higher gear. This happened every time they increased gears in both motorcycles and autos. In fact, it would offer even more lower end power and closer ratios. Thank you for the comment and thank you for the kind words

The engine is pretty asthmatic in 5th. Just not enough torque or horsepower in 5th so I don’t think a sixth gear will help. You can wrap the engine out in 3rd and 4th. 4th will get you up to 70mph, shifting into 5th and accelerating you can feel the gear is just too tall for the torque/horsepower of this engine. A better cam would really help with a better air filter and slightly better exhaust. Then you could have a thumper made for American highways/interstates. For all other roads, I am quite pleased.

Thanks Joe for your comment. Which is why I mentioned maybe boosting the engine size to 500cc, cam would help I agree and the Hitchcock build kit as well. Adding of the 6th gear would work given the same full scale run which Harley did increasing from 5 to 6 speeds in their bigger twins, meaning adjustments in the gear ratios 1 through 5 which would help even the lower gear positions. Back in the day, I made a few pre-2005 Harleys into 6 speeds and the outcome was phenomenal. But your assessment of just plopping in a gear is 100% correct. Thank you for your informed feedback!!!

Joe Garrison If the engine is passing its max HP revs in top on the highway, then an extra gear would be very useful at cruising speed. A little more torque from a small engine size increase would surely help a little too (bigger bore, keep the stroke as it is?). That may need better breathing (carb & exhaust would do that). I’ve been tempted by the Himalayan. It seems like a really nice bike as it is, but a 6th gear and bit more power/torque seems likely to help it. Oh, and thanks for the great review of the bike. @@leslieaustin151 Hi, the max speed is acheived before max redline. In 5th you can crank the throttle wide open and not max the rpm. The bike just does not have the cajones for American highways at 80+ mph. Three days ago I was going into a very high headwind and made 70~75mph laying down on the tank with everything tucked in behind the windscreen. It is just a reality that the bike does not have the tq/hp to go very fast. If you are happy with spurts of 70 but stay within 65 mph range it is a great bike. I have watched the WiltshireMan's videos along with NathanthePostman. Both are part of the reason I chose the Himalayan. The Himilayan even with the Hitchcock or Himalayan Tools engine upgrades only gains about 8hp. Still sharply behind the KTM 390 Duke both in HP/TQ. I have sent Royal Enfield inquiries of when they will breakdown the 390 and Himi engines to do a side by side comparison to find the missing 17 or so horsepower. No response as yet. The Himi is a great all around bike that is easy on the wallet, very easy to maintain, and is good at all tasks asked of it. But it does have the limitations associated with a bike that is meant to be a general use motorcycle. It does all things well, just none of them the best.

I don’t want to take over another man’s channel so this will be my last comment on this topic. However, taking down a KTM engine and a Himalayan engine is fruitless, and that’s why you won’t get an answer from RE, or KTM either. There is no “missing horsepower” in the Himalayan, it’s just a different design. If you want KTM revs and horsepower then buy a KTM. If you want a long-stroke slogger then buy a Himalayan. It’s that simple. Different engines, and different bikes, for different purposes. Why do people buy something and then expect the manufacturer to make it into something else? That’s just silly. Excellent video! So if she struggles on the highway what do you do about long distance highway traveling? Would upgrading the exhaust system help for more air and breathing? Probably not i guess. But a bike like this i can see cross country travel on the highways and it seems like this is a weakness of the bike. Thanks

@@p-dub7422i do ride long distance on the Himalayan, just not highways or should I say roads with speed limits over 65mph or 110kmh. Personally I wouldn't own a big ADV bike. Too heavy for off road and gravel/dirt roads at least for me. So if I'm going coast to coast on roads over the aforementioned speed limits, I'm riding my Harleys. If given one, probably Pan America or GS

I'll put it this way. I take it on deer trails here in hill country which ARE NOT roads. I think ANY mountain road would be a snap. Besides it was designed for the Himalayans

On one of my DRZs , I dropped two teeth ( not three ) in the rear sprocket and it made a big difference on the highway, and didn't really do to much less on trails. Do they make aftermarket sprockets for this bike? thanks

I have owned a Himalayan for about 3 years. It's a great all round bike and probably the only one you need in your stable. I agree with you on the highway performance. I only hope RE is listening to what the customers are saying on squeezing out some more juice out of that engine for highway riding. Bump up engine capacity to about 450cc, add on a sixth gear and lighter clutch..

@@OlManRonin agreed....I picked up my 2021 on Tuesday....went from a 2000 Buell Blast to the Himi....did 65 miles of suburban, city, country, gravel roads....very soft clutch....I stalled it a few times, mostly coming to a California roll and go, just because I had a hard time finding that friction zone....the Blast's clutch feels much like my '78 Sporty....no problems finding that friction zone while slow riding....the Himi did feel so much better, and the power was very comparable to what I was riding already....much more comfortable, and LOVED the twisties....definitely needs that 6th gear....65 miles and I could have done 100 more....after 65 miles on my Buell, my butt would have been DEAD....and on my Sportster....probably the same, along with numb hands and arms....LOL...very impressed thus far.....

I didnt get mine from a Dealer, I bought it used. Its a 2018 I bought in 2020, but I heard from @farmertroy that MotoZilla in Warren, Ohio is close to you AND a pretty good dealer. I cant say to that, but I trust Farmer Troy
