G_d the father cannot be seen, an example of this in scripture is 1 Timothy 6:16. What brother Preston was referring to is an argument of those who don't believe that Jesus is G_d. LoveJah Azure In Isaiah 42:8 God says my “glory” will I not give to another. Yet throughout the bible God allows Jesus to be worshipped, praised, and use his names. Jesus calls himself the “Alpha and Omega”, “First and Last”. In Revelation 1:8 Jesus declares Himself as the “Almighty God”. In Revelation 22:9 John begins to worship an angel, but the angel tells him “stop”! And only to worship “God”. When people began to worship “Jesus” he never tells them stop worshiping and praising him.

Does the term father imply a beginning?

Zena M - 1 Cor 8:6 says that there is only one God who is our Father. God is eternal so I guess that the term Father does not necessitate a beginning in the same "offspring" or "son" does. What do you think?

The context is saying God is the One God compared to all the false gods. And immediately after Jesus is said to be "one Lord", does that mean God the Father isn't our Lord?

They shared the same glory, but when Jesus was in his human flesh, he didn't share that glory, making the Father at the time greater than Jesus Read it in context.. As a human, Jesus was surrounded by sin and sickness. He would no longer be the subject of attack and ridicule by legions of scribes and Pharisees. Instead, He would be at the right hand of the Father in heaven itself. So we see that the term "greater" speaks to the position of the Father in heaven over against the position of the Son on earth. If you look a litter further in John 17:5 Jesus says "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was."

Having laid this foundation, we can then see why Jesus would say that he could do nothing of his own initiative. It was not that he did not have a will or a desire to do things. The issue is that Jesus had come to do the will of the father and he was completely in subjection to the father. Therefore, in that complete subjection, he could do nothing on his own initiative. This does not mean that Jesus is not divine. It means that Jesus, having two natures, and one of them being human, subjected himself voluntarily to the law, as a man, and operated completely under the requirements of a man. A proper and godly man would do nothing of his own initiative but would do anything and only everything that God would have him do.
