Viewers requested a review of K100, Star Tron, and ISO Heet and if any of them can prevent phase separation in gasoline that has 10% ethanol content. Each of these products is tested to determine if it is able to prevent phase separation and whether or not it prevents ice from forming in the fuel once there is water contamination. Additionally, each additive is tested to determine if it will melt ice if ice has already formed in the fuel system before the additive is used. Additionally, each product is then added to an engine that is already running to see if the engine will continue running normally without using the choke or if the engine will stop running altogether. To give every product a fair chance to deliver optimal results, a very generous dose of each product was used in each test. Finally, this is not a sponsored video. I purchased all of the products tested using my own funds.

Not that they would publicly publish the data, but perhaps their claims are valid if the concentration of water in fuel is less than the concentration that you used in your testing.

Maybe, but if so that's not very impressive? 1:1 is 50% water? Vodka can be lit at 60% water 40% alcohol. Considering the price, might it not be equally if not more effective to just buy the equivalent cost of methylated spirits+ gasoline and use those to dilute the water in something more flammable? You can likely buy 10 times the quantity for the same price and even if technically inferior could probably brute force the issue with sheer quantity
@dodgeplow

The cloudy appearance of the HEET mix was the best indication it was going to be the most effective. It means it is suspending the most water in the gasoline.

These products only work on water that is actually absorbed by the fuel through the atmosphere, i.e. at a maximum amount of around 0.5%. You can't just pour in a load of water and expect the products to convert it into fuel. 'Phase separation' refers to the water that has been absorbed, i.e. the 0.5% separating out from the fuel with the ethanol. It doesn't refer to the huge chunk of water that you just added separating out from the fuel and taking the ethanol with it. Nothing can stop that nor do any of these products claim to. I suggest the experiment be repeated, this time slowly adding water a few drops at a time, shaking it in between until it can absorb no more, i.e. gasoline that is saturated with water but no excess in the bottom. Apart from that one modification, repeat the tests as before and I think you will find these products work exactly as claimed and intended.

I was going to post the same thing, there was simply too much water for anything to work. I mean that high of a gas/water mix seems unlikely with reasonable care taken by the owner. I really can't think of a reasonable real world situation aside from rainwater in a fuel tank or getting a bad batch of gas which is rare. I do understand and appreciate the purpose of worst case scenario testing shown here. Bottom line really seems to me to be if you think you need any of these products its probably too late

exactly!! water to fuel ratio in this video is unrealistic in a fuel tank and is way beyond the performance envelope of these products. It's like saying this product treats a 20 Gallon tank, but if you put 19 gallons of water, nothing will make it cumbust ... except maybe lithium !!!

Here in Southern Ontario, Canada, condensation of water in fuel tanks is an ongoing winter problem. First, to prevent condensation keep your fuel tank at least half full when standing overnight. Secondly, use a fuel antifreeze additive regularly to prevent a buildup of water in the fuel tank; methyl alcohol (also known as methanol, wood alcohol, methyl hydrate and several other names), ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol can be used singly or as mixtures. Thirdly, if your fuel has frozen, chemicals dumped in the fuel tank can not get to the ice in the fuel line; the only solution is to heat the fuel line, preferably by moving the vehicle indoors, until the line thaws. For more info on these chemicals see Wikipedia entries for methanol, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. Yes, I am a Chemist.

1:16 seems like an awful high water concentration to expect a fuel stabilizer to combat, as far as phase separation is concerned. I would have been more convinced by volumetric tests examining how much water could be added to each treated sample before phase separation occurred.

I suggest you use a less water during the separation test. You added about 10-20% of water which is way to much compared to realistic conditions. I mean: Having several liters of water in a fuel tank would be concerning. The ability of the additives to form an emulsion is limited. Maybe add 5% water, that could change the results. One of the jars was cloudy which means something different was dispersed in each of the layers.

@keantoken6433 5 лет назад
As I mentioned in my other post, you have to add more isopropyl alcohol than there is water. If its cold you might have to add 3x more. 5% water is doable with isopropyl alcohol with enough of it (0.5% would be something like a cup of water in the tank and wouldn't require the gas to be 15% alcohol), I don't know any other additive which can blend 5% water with gasoline.

@keantoken6433
@keantoken6433 5 лет назад
@@joeserdynski1045 I've done my own experiments, and you can find research with ternary diagrams for isopropyl alcohol, hydrocarbons and water if you know where to look. It just doesn't work in the conditions Project Farm used (which are absolute worst-case conditions). The K100 might be useful if it lives up to the exact claims, that is, spontaneously dissolving 1% water into gasoline (and probably not at subzero temperatures) using 10% K100 (yes, 1/10 a full tank of gas which can be GALLONS of K100). But you can't just scale it up for say 20% water at subzero temperatures, solutions don't work that way. You may end up needing more additive than gasoline.

Thanks for your great videos and important content. It helps consumers a lot. You may have already addressed this, but it appears your ratios of gas to water here are way higher water content than would be typically seen in the real world. To be fair, none of those products were designed to be used with that much water. At the ratio you used, it would be like you had so much water in the tank that there's no way any additive could help. One way you could re-do this experiment would be to get an old gas tank and make sure it's clean, then fill it up with very cold gasoline and wait for it warm up with the cap off. Then the temperature change would cause condensation. Then drain the tank and measure how much condensation this made. Then adjust the ratio on the small scale experiment to accurately reflect the conditions a real car is likely to encounter in a typical winter. I mean it only takes a little bit of water in your fuel line to screw it up, so maybe one of these products would work just enough to help with that. Not sticking up for the companies; just that accuracy and repeatability are important in science.

The purpose of these additives isn't really to make water burn, though, in spite of the silly slogan on one of them. Their real purpose is to make small amounts of water mix with fuel so it flows through the fuel system without causing disruptions. For example, without such an additive, small amounts of water in the gas, usually from condensation, will puddle in the bottom of a carburetor bowl and eventually stall the engine. With such an additive, it will simply be pulled through with the fuel, be vaporized when the fuel is burned, and go harmlessly out the exhaust. These products all made a valiant effort to do this, but he overwhelmed their capacity with unreasonable and unrealistic amounts of water. With small amounts of water these are meant to disperse, I have no doubt they all work. Looking at his results, I would put ISO-heet as the strongest, followed by K100. K100 could potentially also be safer for fuel systems, since it contains no alcohol, albeit isopropyl alcohol is one of the less corrosive alcohols.

I have a suggestion for a new product test for engines! There is a company called XADO (don't know if it's available on your country) and they have several product with a "revitalizing" effect. According to them and many tests, it builds up a metal-ceramic layer on top of the engine parts and improves compression, power and reduces oil consumption. Maybe you could test their products and if they really hold up to what they promise. A good product for the engine would be the "XADO AMC maximum 1 stage". But they also sell a product called SnipeX, which (according to them) improves the accuracy of weapons.

I used them a lot, spend more than a thousand dollars from the engine revitalizant, power steering and automatic transmission, also use engine flash, gear oils and other additives, its good but expensive... if you are into racing, definitely check zado out. But for daily driving, i think its too much, so after i used most of my stocks i returned to mobil1. My 2005 4runner has 185k miles now.

I play around with e85 a lot over the years... When I wash a gritty fuel tank out with water I'll finish it off by shaking some ethanol around in there to absorb the water, then I rinse and repeat. I haven't done this specific test, but I'd be willing to bet adding around 50% ethanol to your gas may get that volume of water to blend...... Maybe..... I should try. I thought it would because the main problem with e10 fuel is that there is so little ethanol present that it's easy to contaminate and drop out....

Top test as a mobile motorcycle mechanic I have had problems for years with ethanol in tanks and seals Literally melting but these problems occur after a few years sitting resulting in petrol tanks rupturing below the fuel line it’s the ethanol acting like a sponge absorbing moisture in the air and sitting below the fuel during phase separation.also ethanol has a short shelf life atm ethanol is around 10% by volume but want to increase it to 20%!!this is in the U.K. try and test the “metal lump” fuel stabiliser that you leave in your tank sounds fishy but would be interesting to test IMO cheers Todd 👍

I put it in my gas cans for all my yard tools i.e. chainsaw, Scag zero turn, grass trimmer, leaf blower etc. I was using it primarily to prevent ethanol damage in all my Stihl equipment. Based on this video and another one you did, it’s a shame that the product doesn’t live up to the label; plus this stuff is expensive. I am not trying to say these products work but my main thing with this is sometimes less is more as in you adding more treatment may actually decrease chances of success. For example if someone is sick and they take an antihistamine to help with symptoms and it sorta works doesn't mean that taking 20x the amount is going to make you feel 20x better. Likely the opposite will be true. Also these may only be rated to prevent phase separation when it come to a lot less water to gas ratio than you are testing. Saying prevents may mean it can help prevent phase separation when water to gas levels are let's say 2% or less but at 30% may be next to useless. That is why I would suggest trying in future test like this adding small amounts of water to treated fuel at a time, stirring, waiting and repeating to see if the point of it separating is affected at all by these treatments. Controls to see how much phase separation occurs too wouldn't be a bad idea. Looking foward to future test.
