* The video was shown to the rulers of America! * ... * .... * ......... * They liked the neutral route most. * .....!!!!! * They liked [no mercy] route more...
I deeply resonate with what you're trying to say. I've been pushing for this idea for decades now. And as someone whos' tried to do what you're suggesting: it absolutely can work. I've seen it happen first hand. But it is not without pitfalls. Undertale is a great introduction to this way of thinking, but if I can recommend something recent that shows how and why it can fail, check out the Owl House. There is a character much like Asriel who is immensely powerful, but really just a hurt child inside. Reaching him is difficult, dangerous even. But ultimately worthwhile in the end. But there is another character that has no parallel in Undertale. A man who has had centuries to get to know people around him but has chosen time and again to see them as vile, irredeemable, and worthy only of destruction. He doesn't get redeemed, even though he begs for it at the end. Trying to lean on shared humanity. But because of their past, even the forgiving, loving, main character who embraces everyone won't give him another chance to do harm, recognizing it for the ploy it is to save his own life. You're absolutely correct that embracing the different is important to who we should be as people. But with that comes being intolerant of those who, after repeated chances to choose differently, choose to reject anyone different from them. I'm worried I won't come off right. Like I'm trying to subvert what's actually being said, so let me try doing it another way. The paradox of tolerance will often be brought up in discussions like this but the solution is simple. Tolerance is not a right, it's a social contract. If you reject the contract by being intolerant you're not longer protected by it. Even then, don't go for the fight option the first time someone rejects it. People make bad choices, that's no reason to condemn them forever. But if they keep getting the offer, and keep rejecting it, then you can't keep them around in your life. Choose Mercy as often as you can. The world needs it. But have a limit.
Owl House...okay! I will definitely check it out! Though I haven't watched it, I can definitely see how there are people like this villain seems to be from this show, who will never accept love and redemption, so your point about having a limit is so valid! I worried about how I was portraying that in this video actually, because I definitely put it very...peaches and cream, like everyone should just love each other UWU lol that's why Undertale is definitely more introductory like you said. I think with the majority of average people you come across, Mercy is so much more needed, but IRL villains who choose to create suffering through their actions...there's a limit indeed and you definitely can't keep that around. Thank you so much for your in-depth comment, I loved reading about your perspective, you definitely applied some much needed nuance 💛🙏!!
I feel that Undertale No Mercy route kind of does what you describe but is not as well rounded, and most people don’t play it. No mercy or genocide kind of does exactly what you say. You are given TONS of opportunities to take back what you do. The game constantly pushes you to stop killing off the monsters. If you continue to do so even against all warnings and encouragements from characters like Papyrus who risks his life believing you could change, then you reach a point where you can’t take back what you are doing. If you keep going and you don’t change Sans confronts you and he says that what you are doing is not worth it (this is more intented as an extension of the pacifist message, like wanting to see all the endings of the game is not worth breaking the bonds you made with the characters, so it is not entirely well translated into this but at least it tries). What ruins it is perhaps after that you can still play pacifist like if nothing happened, but you won’t get the original ending again. The bonds you made are broken forever because you didn’t stop when you could have.
After playing Undertale, I honestly saw a change in who I was as a person. I realised that not everything is black and white. People have their own struggles, their own beliefs, their own feelings. We as humans have been adjusted to viewing the world from our perspective which makes sense but that’s only a small snapshot of the full picture. Everyone deserves a chance at mercy no matter who they might be. Who knows, you might realise they aren’t so different after all. (Also I prefer geno route most but that probably isn’t a good thing to mention here…)
Well, without undertale, I dont really know where I would be. Undertale changed my life and it kept me from becoming something I wouldn't want to have been. This is a very good video, greetings from Spain ^^ P.S. I played undertale in 2016, and I was just a kid/teenager , really, so thats why I say that "it kept me from becoming something I wouldn't want to have been".
I feel you so hard on that, it changed my life too 🙌 it's truly such an amazing game with much needed perspective for all kinds of different people. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Greetings from Texas haha
Played Undertale for a long time, I got the game so many years ago that I don’t remember now, it came out in 2015, so Ima just say 2016. I really appreciate the love that this game gets, it has so many messages and layers to it within its story and characters and it can really change someone and their perspectives if they really dig deep, I personally know everything there is to know about Undertale (Everything…), and I can say it has definitely changed me as well. I used to have dreams that would happen in real life months/years later, and one of the dreams was literally the Sans battle about two years before the game even released, I longed to play the game and as soon as I recognized the character sprites I got it and I’ve been happier since then. I hope this video reaches some important people some day, your editing is really good! Plus you are promoting a very positive and strong message.
That's so awesome! Undertale definitely has a way of luring you in and keeping you digging for more and more haha that's so great it changed your life too!! Thank you for watching, and enjoying the editing haha I've been trying really hard to learn video editing, so that makes me feel very happy :)
Asgore and Toriel are examples of people choosing to hate or not hate. Asgore developed hate towards humans because some of them killed his son Asriel, meanwhile Toriel decided that hating humans was not the answer. I've seen many people like Asgore, they've become hateful of a certain group of people because that group of people did something to their own group of people, for example I've seen people fight sexism with sexism, racism with racism, xenophobia with xenophobia or any kind of political or religious extremism with more extremism. Meanwhile, if we are like Toriel we would know that hating an entire group of people is not the answer, and that we should be kind.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I think I'm gonna like where it's going! Edit: YES! You absolutely hit the nail on the head with this video. Beautifully done! As Americans, we need show love and work to understand people who are different than us, and I believe Undertale shows that better than any other game. It's about learning that we're all more similar to eachother than we might think, and learning to love our "enemies." Anyways, fantastic video! That title was a bold claim, but you're absolutely right. Like and Sub buttons smashed.
Soon it will be found. An ending, the one you choose. Orchestrated, created, made to test you, find what it is you believe is true. It will be very, very interesting.
Sorry y'all, thank you for pointing out...Asgore and Co. are Goats 🤦🤦 lol thanks so much for all the support thus far 😊💛 EDIT: Asgore and Co. are goat-"LIKE" but not necessarily goats through and through. But definitely...not a cow...as I said in the video lol...Also thanks again for the support! I did not expect this video to get even any noticeable amount of views. I'm intrigued by all the different perspectives down here in the comments, thanks everyone for sharing their thoughts!
They're mostly goats. They have paws for feet & hands instead of hooves, and their design was apparently heavily inspired by the rabbit-like Mimiga race from Cave Story.
@@katiaaahhh they are never confirmed to be goats. the closest you'll ever get is a question you can ask Gerson "is Asgore a goat?". it's in a similar fashion as Sans' blue flaming eye. ingame it just blinks blue and yellow and nothing else.
I started playing Undertale after listening to “to the bone” and wanted to know what the game was about. I’m addicted to the game now, and I’m glad to see someone still interested in this game in 2024. The editing on this video is so good I’m surprised you only have 200 subs. I’m subbing 100%!! (Sorry for the random things throughout the comment lol :)
OMG that song is so fun 😆😆 Papyrus' Voice Actor really killed it haha. That's so awesome that you ended up giving it a try! UNDERTALE has a way of really making you obsessed 🤣 I only wish I had found it sooner, it really affected me on so many levels. Thank you so much for subbing 🙏😭 no need to apologize at all, I love hearing everyone's POV and experiences 💛
You want another game that has a message American politics need? Persona 4. It's about ceaselessly searching for the truth, despite how easy it is to cling to any popular idea, no matter how true. The game does some really interesting things with the story to emphasize this theme. Definitely worth a playthrough if you can stomach some bad pacing.
I thought I was never going to see a video like this one. I love this. I feel that the problem is that the kind of people that would benefit of it would never play a game like that but I just loved this concept xD.
Hello, I came across this video in the recommendations, and I did not regret listening to your thoughts. Although I do not live in America, I agree with you and can say that people anywhere in the world should reconsider their views in order to live peacefully and not conflict with anyone. In Russia, too, people are divided into several groups, you probably know why, and they also do not have good relations with each other. Although this happens not only because of the political situation, but also because of other views on some things in our society. Personally, life has taught me that if you are not treated well, then sometimes you yourself should listen and change something in yourself, but if it is because you cannot change, then let others still accept it. Personally, I have an absolutely normal attitude towards people who are not like me, but I believe that there are certain types of people who should change something about themselves. For example: people with a non-traditional orientation should understand that not everyone likes the fact that they declare it at every turn, and stop doing this, much less oppressing all straight people. I mean, you don't have to say and show all the time that you're gay or lesbian or bisexual or whatever, but you can talk about it with people you trust. Likewise, African Americans should not harm whites simply because they are white. And besides, the word BLACK DOESN'T MEAN NIGGA (i.e. we do not insult anyone simply by calling them blacks by their skin color). Otherwise, the author of the video is great, one of the few on all of RU-vid who raises such topics, connecting them with such cool and instructive video games and other modern works of art. Continue in the same spirit!
We’re all people. But so were all the monsters of history. And their subjects who followed them into great evils. Undertale is easy on this question because the human monster conflict isnt about ideology or worldview. It doesnt have the veneer of ideas. Monsters are humans are just the same but with different looks. Ok so my enemy is a person? But also my enemy supports things that destroy thousands of children? And causes great suffering in the word? And are directly against the interests of my friends? Giving themselves more at the expense of my people? Why should I tolerate such evils? Do they really listen? Why would they accept something that would be against their interests? Hugging it out wont resolve these issues. Because obviously if they cant accept what i believe they are simply dishonest and denying of the truth.
This is actually something undertale itself points out. Being nice doesn't solve every problem. But it's still important to keep an open mind. Not everyone that goes against you is evil. Wrong maybe, not evil. And even if they are, chances are it stems from a lack of "hugging it out" in the past, before it stems into something more dangerous
I wish it was this simple. Unfortunately it’s not. Monsters have common ground they can work towards with Frisk in the pacifist route. Neither party wants to fight for one reason or another. Conservatives and leftists are opposed on virtually every issue at this point. They’re two entirely different cultures with pretty much no overlap that I can think of off the top of my head, aside perhaps from geographical proximity(*). We’re finished. Best America can hope for is a peaceful national divorce with a common defense pact, but that’s a stretch as many on the left are opposed to the American people having their own nation.
It probably isn't that simple haha but I think for some people it can be, it's perhaps inching in a better direction. While the two "main" political systems are opposed on every issue on paper, I think there are many people who take what they like from either side and apply it, so not everyone is just "left" or "right" plain and dry. Plus, a lot of people have so many other things in common besides politics! And pretty much everyone has in common that we are getting screwed over economically...so there's always that 💀 Maybe we are finished and I have worried about that a lot in the last several years, but...it can't hurt for some people to have some hope 🤷 at least...I hope that's the case. But anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts! We don't have to agree, but it does make for curious conversation lol
@@katiaaahhh That’s fair. I would put more hope into Christ than anything politicians can or will do. Unfortunately as it is, politics inform culture now (which is sort of how the culture war started- people wanted to leave politics out of culture, but the major producers of culture- movies, games, TV, etc- kept shoving it in.) I’m not sure we can agree that we’re being screwed over economically. I mean, you and I agree, but left and right in general don’t. Hoping for the best is good. But it’s also good to prepare for the worst. Also, out of curiosity, did you remove some of my comments?
@@azzythechristianfurry Yeah, politicians suck. Greed corrupts absolutely and we get to see that real time every day. I prefer having hope in literally almost anything but politicians lol I definitely miss the times where politics was not in everything but obviously that time has passed for now. I agree with your sentiment, hope for the best, prepare for the worst! Appreciate your politeness in this matter :) And absolutely not lol I have not removed anyone's comments actually despite some people getting real spicy haha, but I'm wondering if they are getting removed by YT due to key words. I know people are arguing about political topics and bringing left vs. right into it. I see them come through on YT Studio but can't actually see them on the video now that I'm checking. I would only remove them if someone was threatening someone which I haven't seen happen yet.
@@katiaaahhh Agreed. Maybe it’s just nostalgia, but even playing the older games for the first time it seems that they weren’t designed to push anything. Ah. Well, that satisfies my curiosity. Yeah, I might’ve triggered a RU-vid censor with the wording. RU-vid be that way. Weird, but not surprising, that it’s only seeming to affect one side from what I’ve been seeing. It’s really no problem. You haven’t been antagonistic, so I’m glad to return the same treatment.
I mostly listen to your other channel, as I like relaxing songs that are depressing, "cough" "cough" Omori "cough" "cough" But quite an interesting, and probably hot take.
For a start, if let's us focus less on arguing and more on trying to find a more productive solution than a wall. You know what to do when life gives you lemons.
@@Thatrubiksguy I could tell. I figured it would be funny if I could come up with a sincere answer. And for the other aspect, an ideal solution would find a way to turn the influx of immigrants into a net positive, then reform laws so that they wouldn't be "illegal". Ideally, it would do a better job of sifting out the good and the bad, and make tightening border security less of a moral gray area.
I feel like this video ignores the Chara's in the world who have genuinely hateful ideologies where your very existence is at risk if they get their way. The kind that cause parents to reject and kick out their own kids for loving differently than them, and pass laws to restrict things like marriage and the rights of those they disagree with. That say things like that people of the incorrect race are inherently more violent and dangerous, and direct genuine violence towards those they see as the enemy. Things that negatively effect peoples lives here in the real world where you can't just accept and love someone out of believing you're less human than they are, as they have already dehumanized you. I'd love to just empathize my grandma into seeing mixed race couples as not being an affront to god, that gay people aren't the same thing as pdf. files, that trans people aren't indoctrinating kids, and that she shouldn't financially support programs that send those same kids to conversion camps despite all major medical institutes and psychological associations agreeing on decades of research on how damaging that is to those kids, or that having clinical depression isn't the same thing as being an entitled brat who just needs to suck it up, but when you live around someone long enough who never takes any other side into account for even a moment, it starts to feel genuinely draining and harmful to the mental health if you are a part of that group, especially when people with ab00sive tendencies tend to gravitate to those who try to see the best in everyone so may even take advantage of such good will. Not to mention the hate from certain sides don't seem to often be equal. Like I don't feel like feeling hatred towards someone who says that your existence should be snu'ffed out, compared to someone feeling hatred because they want to sn'uff out that person. Sometimes people feel upset because they're genuinely being discriminated against, and comes as a natural reaction to feeling unjustly treated. To be frank this sort of dismissiveness come across like someone who during american slavery would get mad that those africans just aren't respectful enough of the side that's enslaving them and that they really just need to understand the other sides perspective a bit as their daughter is sold off in front of them.
I definitely understand and have experienced that there are actual horrific people in the world, just downright morally abhorrent people who want to harm others. But this video was supposed to be somewhat light and more so addressing the "averages" of experiences, as in, most average people running into most average people in America. I think most people in the states are average people who don't want to hurt anyone, people who lean a bit on one side or another on various topics, but ultimately are not desiring to actively hurt others with their ideas. Yet, in my experience, so many average people approach average people with "weapons drawn" or "shields up", like, walking around on eggshells and people bracing for an argument. It's not really about the end result but about the initial approach, about not approaching guns blazing when you don't know a person. Unfortunately it's difficult if not maybe impossible to truly address all the complexities of what goes on in the world in a video. If I talk about generalizations, there are situations that won't make the cut or apply. I really just wanted to make a light video about how empathy would help a lot of people in the U.S. but I know it won't help everyone in every situation. I can see though, with the situation with your grandma, how that would be a huge factor in how you interpreted the video, but she is definitely someone you know, you have possibly used "Mercy" many times to no avail and though I don't know either of you personally, that's probably a different story than what I'm trying to address in this video. I'm sorry, that sounds like a difficult relationship to have with your grandma. Thanks for sharing your personal experience, it definitely made for a thought provoking morning!
@@Equal99.998 Wait, now I need to know because after reading the replies I am confused 🤣 your comment was a joke referring to the intro sequence with the 1% locking everyone underground...right?
This is something we all need to hear. So many inputs nowadays focus on division and hatred for the opposite end of whatever spectrum you may be on, instead of highlighting how we are all similar, the universal struggles we go through as humans, and how we can come together. This was a great watch and I can’t wait to see more! 🖤🤍
Tolerance Paradox. You must be tolerant of everyone but the intolerant to remain a tolerant society. Also the right thinks undertale is woke so they'd never play it or absorb the message. Flawed concept inherently, especially flawed video when presented as "EVERYONE is at their neighbors throats" when it's literally just fascists and those who push back against them. Disliked.
I agree. Furthermore, in Undertale, humans oppressed the Monsters and nearly killed them all. The war was a genocide. The allegory doesn't truly work since it is not two viewpoints but a system of domination.
Thank you for your feedback. My intention with the video was to highlight the value of empathy as demonstrated in Undertale, and how it can be a powerful tool in bridging divides. While I didn’t say ‘everyone is at their neighbors’ throats,’ I do believe that empathy is crucial for improving dialogue in our society right now. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts however.
