Can the MG5 EV, the electric estate car, handle a family holiday? Filmed in the first week of lockdown opening up on 16th April 2021.
Throughout its first 1000 miles I have only ever used the 3-pin charger to plug in from home, therefore can't currently answer any questions about charging networks or faster chargers. We don't tend to go that far away so it might be a long time before I get to use a public charger of any kind! If you have any other questions about MG5 ownership please leave a comment.

Small safety tip for granny charging. I don't know if you have done this but if you haven't always completely unroll the drum. Rolled up cables in a drum act like a spool that can overheat the cable drum which is why most of them come with overheating protection(doesn't mean it's a great idea to test it). And just in case everyone who is going to do this should get a drum that has a built in circuit breaker. Especially when loading over night.

Subbed! Great review! I’m keeping close on the MG5 and good reviews like yours. Also I love the place you visited as shown on this video. My 4 year old daughter and 11 year old son and my wife will love that place! Wishing you guys a happy and prosperous new year. Thank you.

Thanks for the video. This and the one James and Kate have just done using an MG5 for work is making a very good case for this car as a sensibly priced 200mile range vehicle. Glad you enjoyed Somerset - a lovely county.👍👍👍

Thanks - James and Kate's video of MG5 is one of the videos which convinced me to get the MG5 in the first place. Their praise of the car (especially coming from professional EV servicers with a small family) are a real mark of approval for this car. Glad you found the video helpful. Love Somerset, am going to make the same trip again end of this week!

Nice video and shows it's a practical car too, but just one observation your children were not wearing there seatbelts correctly and would sustain serious injury in a head-on crash ! please ensure the belt is threaded through the top part of the booster seats so that the belt goes over the shoulder to prevent forward motion in an accident thanks !

A minor safety tips: Get yourself a IP66 rated extension lead rated at 13A - they are easy to obtain from a well known online site - and that way it will be rain proof for the plug. As noted by others - always make sure you unwind an extension lead and not even leave as a coil on the ground. At high currents it creates inductive heat. In an unknown house - like on holiday you may need to select your socket with some care, just for peace of mind especially if charging over night. The very best is an outdoor EV rated socket normal socket, but these are still very rare - although all European sockets are rated at 13A, there is a separate electrical regulation for EV compliant sockets. This is separate from a true type 2 32A car charger, I am talking about type 1 granny charger sockets - they have their own regulation rating now. The second best option is a cooker box with 13A ancillary socket as you know this is on a 45A spur, and has been very well tested by the cooker so must be in good condition. Third best option is to use a socket that is normally associated with a high load item - like washing machine, dryer - again, any problem will have already been found as these high load items will test the circuit before hand. Given my last comment, note that charging a car will add 10A continuous to that ring main - rated at 32A. So if you charge your car from a kitchen socket remember that you have reduced the possible load available in the kitchen so that you might trip a 32A mcb if you turn other stuff on (kettle, toaster, do some washing). Different countries have different ratings and sharing of circuits and wiring configuration - here I am talking about shared UK ring mains. I have seen comments on sites about : why only 10A - because that is the maximum continuous rated load you are allowed to use on a 13A peak rated socket. The weak point is the connection pins in the plug - all plugs will get warm at this load. I also have seen people complain about a charger saying it burnt their socket - NO that is your poor wiring in your house.

Thanks for sharing your trip. It's unusual for the "Granny charger" to be included in an EV purchase rather than a Type 2 cable. I don't know if the facelifted MG5 will change in this respect - due to be available in the UK late 2022.

Thanks for giving the family angle reviews, we have 2 kids and another on the way and I'm trying to figure out a configuration of narrow seats that will work across the back row.
@Andytizer
@Andytizer 3 года назад
Thanks! The MG5 only has 2 isofix points so will require some aftermarket products to make it work. I believe you can get something that will 'shift' the isofix nearer the door which might give enough room for a centre car seat which would have to attach or be secured via the seatbelt. I don't envy you, good luck with the 3rd kid!

you did fully take all the cable out of the cassette so the cable does not over heat. you can buy a plastic cable box for outside that you can put the plug into to keep water away from the plugs So you did ask the place if ok to charge and did they charge you more to do the charging at the place the farmer wants the chicken you took home back as a pet hehehe

Hi. Great video. I am seriously considering the MG5 LR (new shape) which I believe comes out end of 2022. From what I have read it will have the same battery/range options as the current model. I will be doing a lot of motorway miles, (East Midlands to Scotland or Cornwall or South Wales or Manchester) on a regular basis so am keen to find out what realistically the MG5 can do when spending 80/90% of a 200 mile journey on a motorway at 70mph. What’s your honest opinion on this from your experience? (I saw in the video your MG5 standard range was getting 200 miles from a 100% battery. 3.5 to 4 miles per kw. Is this normal?) Many thanks. Kev

Made In China is the benchmark in quality, high precision and worker benefits that all the non communist countries wish they could achieve. It's only China's prodigal son North Korea that does it better. Yes the doors are designed 'light' to save weight and ergonomic to save the user effort, it has nothing to do with being thin, cheap and nasty as some unfriendly commentators have said.... They will be sent to a reeducation camp to enlighten them out of their poor attitude towards the great leap forwards.
