Can Performance Full Exhaust still be Quiet? Does your car or truck need to be obnoxiously loud after installing headers and a 3" straight through exhaust? In this video I compare a mild "stock" exhaust on an 88-98 OBS Chevy Silverado (GMC Sierra) against a complete exhaust to see if increased performance has to increase the noise level.
The DIY exhaust system I chose is not only effective but inexpensive and emissions compliant complete with Speedmaster stainless steel mid length mufflers (under $200) , Magnaflow catalytic converter, and a combination of 2-1/2" and 3" piping out the back!

my cobra has full exhaust 2.5" from the headers with each side going into a magnaflow then a modified superturbo muffler. you can hardly hear it at its lowest idle and just RIPS at WOT. love it. also, made more power when i added the two magnaflows, so i have 4 mufflers making 400hp out of a 4.6 with no head or cam work.

Full longtubes and 3” exhaust on my coyote f150 and it sounds basically stock because I left the stock muffler in. Factory muffler on those is straight through 3” pipe

That's a damn good idea new stock muffler tech is a million miles ahead of all the old 80s and 90s stuff. Cincinnati figured out most consumers want the power and efficiency and good performance I'm willing to bet there's less than 5 horsepower on the table on a basically stock engine and it's way quiet and it's built to fit.

@@johnsheetz6639 bingo. You can see right through em on these trucks. I’ve since changed over to the factory raptor setup on the truck. Quite a bit louder but no annoying done in cab and calm when I want it to be

Seems like the modified system sounded more aggressive on acceleration which to me sounds pretty good. Performance wise i say it gain a few ponies!

Yea it was maybe a touch throatier and for sure worth some extra power but certainly wasnt too loud. I try to tell people all the time you can have a good performing exhaust without waking the neighbors. In a newer video I ditch the quiet muffler and go for a Flowmaster 10 series. The change js dramatic :)

No surprised, you didn't change the muffler so the sound really didn't change much. Sure the catalytic converter and headers have a little bit to do with the exhaust sound, but it really comes down to the muffler choice. If you would cut that muffler off that thing would be significantly louder. Or if you put a stock muffler on that thing would be significantly quieter

You could put a Flowmaster 50 and it will be a little bit more sound but not obnoxious

Thats actually a really nice mellow sound. I get tired of the cackling machine gun exhaust note. I like loud when its a good quality exhaust note. But im going the same direction you are, except further. Im going for as quiet as possible with the highest flow possible.

Yea it was certainly quiet. In terms of flow I could have likely done duals with a crossover pipe and dual mufflers but given this motor probably makes 185whp it just didnt seem worth it.

@@truckandroll989 an equal length h pipe with your mufflers and pipes crossing over to clear the tank after the H does sound very nice. Did a 318 D-150 that way with long tube headers, h pipe, and 2.5" exhaust. Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. It was a clean sounding, smooth, quiet exhaust.

@@truckandroll989honestly I think this is now one of the best sounding 90s Chevys I’ve heard. Everybody just straight pipes them and it’s just awful. This sounds good

Do you think Headers or any of this other stuff would affect TBI's tune or functioning? Is this all just a general improvement or could it mess with things ? I bought a 3 inch magnaflow type, thinking about the rest

So i recently had to do emissions testing and since mine is a 95 it requires a sniff test. Based on those results (you can check out a newer video I posted too) its running great. I think the computer should compensate as required. Check out my newer video

Thank you! Honestly it is still a bit quiet for my taste but I must say it is certainly a good feeling know that you can add performance with no negative side effects. I recently had the vehicle emissions tested and found that my emissions are less with the new high flow cat and headers than it was before with the stock system!

What percent better flow would you guess you've achieved with that? Mostly interested in the engine life, economy and power gains

I dont think it has any positive or negative affects on engine life. Power its hard to say but typically headers like this you should pick up some power maybe 10% if i had to guess? Fuel mileage on my truck is pretty consistent around mid 15s. Bit worse in winter. Im also on bigger tires, now lifted, and my commute is a mix of freeway and city. I will say this 30yr old truck seems to get very similar to my 2019 ram with the 5.7

Snag some resonators off of Summit racing and see if they can be welded in. Works well to quiet down an exhaust

For sure. Check out my newer video. I replace the straight through muffler with a single chamber and it sounds a lot better (maybe a bit too loud).

Yea its all listed in the video all the part numbers. Mufflers are 3” straight through magnaflow style. I have a newer video with Flowmaster single chamber too

@@truckandroll989 I’m no expert on exhausts but I got a question brother I’m a gbody guy I got an 85 cutlass supreme. And I just picked up an 87 for my wife it’s got a 350 swapped into it the previous owner straight piped it so it’s obnoxiously loud my wife hates it we lowriders out here so my question is what exhaust should I get or type to quiet it down the quieter the better? Any feed back is greatly appreciated

@@OGNightStalkeR a couple things will help. Biggest will be if its straight piped a muffler. Magnaflow or a similar non chambered style will quiet it way down. If that isn’t enough add a resonator in front of your muffler. Another tip if you can is to add a h pipe or x pipe. It will smooth out the harshness

Exactly!! I absolutely hate those guys that just do straight pipe on anything especially when it's basically stock and a daily driver just doesn't make sense, it's very annoying. I understand you might think it's cool but let me tell you it's not. The worst are 4 or 6 cylinder guys thinking it sounds good lmao it's STUPID please don't do it!!

Cool dude. Really appreciate what you specifically brought to the table. Since Im feeling helpful headers, larger tubing, aftermarket cats minimally affect sound. If you want a performance exhaust without the noise buy a quiet muffler. Can’t wait to see your next project on YT ;)

@@danielrivera4216 so assuming no leaks if you go to a quiet muffler like a Magnaflow style you shouldnt lose any performance and it will quiet it down. If that isnt quiet enough resonators in front of the muffler help too.
