Classic psychedelics show promise in the treatment of a range of mental health conditions including substance use disorders and have garnered significant interest from the media and lay public. In this presentation, Dr. Hendricks will review the history of classic psychedelics, including a focus on the first wave of classic psychedelic research and why this wave came to an abrupt end. He will then review findings from the contemporary, second wave of classic psychedelic research, including preliminary findings from his pilot trial of psilocybin in the treatment of cocaine use disorder. Finally, he will discuss the future of classic psychedelics as approved medications for substance use disorders and other indications, with a focus on avoiding hype cycles and disillusionment that have accompanied a range of medications in the past.
Short bio:
Dr. Hendricks has been an active researcher in the psychedelic field since 2014, publishing population studies suggesting psychedelics may be effective in preventing and treating substance use, criminal recidivism, and psychological distress, among other outcomes, as well as a number of systemic reviews and theoretical pieces. He is currently Principal Investigator of a pilot trial of psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy in the treatment cocaine dependence, psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy in the treatment of fibromyalgia, and low doses or “microdoses” of psilocybin in the treatment of demoralization. Dr. Hendricks is also site PI of a NIDA-funded study of psilocybin for smoking cessation.
