Can rebuilding my E36's entire cooling system fix this mystery noise?

In today's installment of the e36 build series, I attempt to fix a mysterious rattle / squeak on my e36 convertible. e36s, e46s, and even e90s and newer BMWs are notorious for developing scary noises out of nowhere, and it's always difficult to diagnose a car noise you can't quite locate. Today, we dive into my BMW e36 328i's cooling system and serpentine belts to fix a squeak/rattle. Will it work? Who knows.
Things we cover in this video:
- Draining / flushing the radiator and block to remove coolant from the e36
- Tearing down the serpentine belts + cooling system so we can rebuild it
- Rebuilding the e36 cooling system with all new, metal parts (new thermostat, aluminum thermostat housing, all metal water pump)
- installing new belts, pulleys, and tensioners on the front of the M52
- bleeding the cooling system (notoriously difficult on e36 BMWs, and I share a quick tip for bleeding the system without overheating your e36/e46!)
I hope you enjoy this installment of the e36 build series :) if you have a mystery noise coming from your car, I hope this is somewhat helpful.

Just found your channel and I'm loving binging the videos! Did you make your license plate holder yourself or order it?

Thanks so much!! That’s so nice thank you for watching. And the actual mount itself (that mounts the plate off center) is from Amazon I think, it’s been working well so far: a.co/d/2mpRISG

The main tensioner is a mechanical tensioner and the replacement is a hydraulic. Not sure if the hydraulic is better, but that's the only part that's available now.

i discovered this later - makes so much sense. the bolt difference is a pain but otherwise the hydraulic version works excellently.

if your heat is not strong its probably a bad heater valve.

what radiator and expansion tank would you go for?, also would you swap to electric fan?
@logan-taylor
@logan-taylor 2 года назад
Probably mishimoto for both, although i’ve heard mixed reviews on some of their other products. Also, people say the expansion tank design makes bleeding the system a bit trickier, but having a metal piece in there is worth the hassle to me. Regarding electric fan: I’ve considered it to help with throttle response + avoid the clutch fan exploding randomly (which is bound to happen at some point lol), but when i do expansion tank + radiator i’m just planning to replace the OEM clutch fan to avoid any headaches with electronics/possible overheating. As long as the clutch fan keeps the car cool and doesn’t explode i’m happy.

@@logan-taylor mishimoto stuffs fitment is pretty good. There were a couple things I had to grind a bit to get enough clearance but it was really minor. I drove mine for years in Texas heat without a fan on the stock radiator setup. You're fine without one but the mishimoto efan is easy to install and wire up. A vacuum coolant fill kit takes all the effort out of bleeding and allows you to test for leaks before putting coolant in, totally worth getting one.

@@czerka this is all great info, thanks - I don’t mind minor modifications/grinding at all. And if the radiator can handle texas heat i’m sure it’ll handle seattle’s overcast 50 degree days just fine lmao. You may have convinced me to go for an electric fan after all... hmm.

@@logan-taylor its really simple, if you get all mishimoto stuff, it'll all fit up together. To wire it you can tap into the windshield sprayer pump for keyed power, the battery jump point at the top right of the bay for constant power, and there is a factory ground near the strut tower in the same area.

@@czerka sounds simple enough - thanks for the advice. I’ll check it out.
