Scott Mitchell-Malm and Glenn Freeman join Edd Straw to round-up the final track action of the 2023 season: The end-of-season test in Abu Dhabi. They discuss whether any of the young drivers who got a run-out are likely to make it to F1 and what's potentially blocking them from doing so. They also debate whether Pato O'Ward's ongoing McLaren outings might help him earn him a race seat in the future, and whether Sergio Perez's full day of running might help him hit the ground running in 2024.

If you limit the grid to 20 drivers, and you want drivers to have 10 year careers, you should get 2 rookies per year on average. We had 3 this year (4 if Lawson counts). The stakes are so high, in F1, committing to a full-time seat, is insane. In most team sports, you can be eased in, but not in F1. The risk of a bringing in a De Vries is so high vs getting a serviceable if lower-grid HUL or MAG. F1 wants more races, either through additional GP weekends or through sprint races. More weekends stretch the current talent, and sprint races are looking for a reason to exist. If F1 is willing to have 3-4 drivers per team, why not have sprint races be run by a driver not taking part in the GP? Or, if they insist on holding more and more events, why not mandate that out of 30 weekends, no single driver can partake in more than 22 (and have 8 marquee events, say BRA/CAN/JAP/AUS internationally and GBR/BEL/ITA/MON, count double so that some events retain all the prestige?

Back in the late 70s/early 80s the F1 teams used to do a race of champions in F1 cars. I remember watching a young Danny Sullivan race against Keke Rosberg at maybe Brands Hatch in maybe 82 (ish?). That could be tweaked a little bit, and they could do something like that with young drivers/ other series champs that may want to have a go at F1.

I think the relative immaturity of the current technical regs and just how different they are from the previous generation is a big barrier for young drivers. Teams need the feed back of experienced drivers to maximize development under the cost cap. The cost cap also isn’t helping with the higher probability of rookies being involved in more accidents than experienced drivers - and that also impacts the development budget.

It´s time to create a league system for F1 have 20 teams with 10 in each league. With the current F1 teams in the Premier F1 League and the other 10 teams in the Second F1 League. The second F1 League may run less races and more concentrated on traditional tracks. The winners of the Second F1 League get promoted to the Premier F1 League and the last on the ranking of the Premier F1 League gets demoted to the Second F1 League. This will give much more opportunity to young drivers show their skills and also give the Andretti kinds a chance to get into F1. It also makes the traditional tracks more lucrative as there will be more races. Money does not seem to be a problem too with the cost cap and teams now are worth about a billion dollar. It will make the racing more exciting as also being last has consequences.

I think we're going through a short lull period with young talent. Pourchaire really should replace either a good-but-nothing-special Zhou or a totally indifferent Bottas. When a team has backed one driver for so long, they should at least make the effort to get him up to F1. Yes, Theo's F2 results haven't been that impressive but I'd still take a chance on him to make Sauber more exciting and relevant. If Bearman and Antonelli do a brilliant job in F2 next year, I think we'll see a bigger flow of talent coming in starting with those two.

Not hurting O’Ward to remind teams that he now has the super-licence qualification, despite the FIA denying him it in 2020 (exactly the same way as Colton Herta) by disqualifying his points from Indy Lites because it didn’t have enough teams participate in a full season. Sure the series have different skill sets, but the teams know which drivers are capable of both and strangely they’re exactly the people who’ll bring $m with them 😹 Honestly if Palou, Rossi, O’Ward & Herta were in F1, the Indianapolis setup would be the Australian IndyCar Championship.

I wonder if the reason really high quality/good young drivers seem to come up in waves is because at the beginning there may be a couple with a lot of natural talent & over time the others with potential really develop well because they spend a lot of time competing against each other. Then at some point they matriculate out and you have a bit of a lull until you get some more young raw talent come in and the bar/level of competition gets raised again.
@matthewandrews1653
@matthewandrews1653 6 месяцев назад
I think the problem is that F1 has now built this idea of a feeder system with F3/F2 etc but you can't have the same expectations as that concept from other sports. In Football,Basketball etc even if you're slightly lesser than elite level in amateur there are potentially enough spaces on teams for some to be picked up, maybe to fill sub spots. F1 is much more elite than that. Even if every driver left there would still only be space for 20 drivers, maybe 30 with reserves, and if you're successful in F1 especially with the amount of time and money that needs to be invested in a driver to reach that success it is both financially and competitively risky to make a change. Therefore some drivers will hold a seat for years. This not only means that the top of F2 are looking for a seat but also there is a further group who came up and had to go elsewhere while they wait for a seat (like Nyck De Vries) I have no idea how you can solve this as it would be unfair to set a rule where you have to change out a driver if they're below a certain points threshold or something. Maybe have reserve drivers do a sprint at some point in the year so you can see how they handle an actual race situation but even that causes issues. I think we have to just accept that it is the elite of the elite and is one of the most difficult top level sports in the world to get into and that's a double edged sword. You may have less driver turnover but in theory those who do get a chance are more likely to be generational talent such as Verstappen, Leclerc, Lando etc.

The reason the drivers market is the way it is, with no changes next year and no rookies given a chance was to be expected. Rookies normally only get a chance if somebody is to bad to make up for the money they bring or when somebody retires. When Verstappen joined in '15, teams saw young guys could be ready for F1, so we had a wash of new drivers who were given a year or two and are now stable and experienced. There's simply a grid full of drivers now, the majority of which have many years in them and enough experience. It's that jump/drop in age that clogs up the market and will do until the first of the Verstappen generation retires, up to then it's only ham, alo, bot, mag, hul, ric. The rest is still in their 20s with 10+ years to go.

Peaks of talent comes from competing against each other, either in the same year or because of records set one or two years prior. This competition pushes them forwards and make them better then the rest. One with "easy" competition and/or 2 or 3 years needed to become champion will never be the same level. Teams and pro's know and recognize this, hence why top tears are so selective. If you are looking for the top 0.01% the pool gets very thin. 2022 Piastri battle highlights that and Fernando and Lewis still performing at age shows why.. The best of the best with a complete package is extremely rare to find, but that is what they are looking for. That ROI is the best in all aspects when it comes to investing time and money in to sports. Hence they say "a raw diamond" when young or a "rare diamond" when older... Max is the most extreme example at the moment and in 10 years it will be much more appreciated then now..

The huge collective memory lapse that F1 fans and pundits have around pay drivers is amazing. Drives changed hands all the time in the 80s and 90s BECAUSE OF MONEY, driver talent was a very distant chance of a factor and more of a lucky roll of the dice! Our current stability is the outlier; NOT the norm! You guys remember a wet tunnel in 1981 but not the crazy “who is running this weekend” we used to ask nearly every single race…

It was genuinely the gentlest "crash" I have ever seen. He then went on to win Spa just two races later. The rest of the season fell apart because Ferrari went backwards with their updates. Hockenheim didn't break him, the wheels just fell off the Ferrari train like usual in their post-Todt era. Meanwhile Perez, the so called king of street races, literally just fucked it into the barriers on his own. What "broke" him was just him unable to keep up with Max as the car developed and its characteristics shifted around.

Christian likes his good sleep that he has been getting since 2021, don't expect him to pander to non-RB/anti-Max fans instead of doing what is best for him and his team.

you mean like Ricciardo, Gasly, Albon....? You do realise verstappen had other teammates before rrright? Or are you still so deep in denial, that you actually believe your own made-up nonsense arguments?

I think F1 is entirely too wrapped up in what accomplishment at what age of the young guys. Steph Curry anyone?

No, no, NO. Not the will Perez be the next champion again. That subject has been beaten dead to a pulp. He also will not bounce back, there is nothing to bounce back to. He is just a mid-tier driver. He can race fast but not consistent

Nothing like Bottas. Bottas was super consistent. Never qualified outside the top ten. Perez flopped every race between Miami and Vegas. A terrible run of form

Perez is driving 1 of 2 cars on the grid that can compete for a title. The 18 other cars on the grid in 2023 aren't competitive at all. Horrible year for F1. Ooof!!! 1 team won 21 races 😂😂😂 in 2023. To say F1 is competitive is a JOKE 🤡. F1 has to be fixed ASAP because everything about it is broken. 9 out of 10 teams that weren't even close to competitive in a race! Unacceptable!!!

Where were you when merc was in the same position from 2014 to 2020? Because i wonder if it was broken back then in your eyes, probably not because your driver won. F1 isn't broken at all, it is functioning as it has been for decades. Don't like it? Go watch curling.

@@gravity4934 Which is why i asked why you didn't complain back when merc did the same. I know the answer, maybe you should learn to read first, because unlike you i know how to actually read. And guess what, F1 isn't going to change anything because you or anyone else who does not like Max/RB asks. You don't matter to F1 at all.
