The 4.4 is a very easy engine to work on. It’s not hard to pull these motors and reseal them. I buy these all the time. I plan on pulling the engine and replacing the valve stem seal, timing chain guides (maybe the chain), coolant pipe, timing cover gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and alternator bracket seal for every one I pick up. It’s a weekend job at an easy pace.
The BMW logo must fade after 7 years, so the owners know their car has fully depreciated and needs replacement. It's the same technology as they use in toothbrushes
I'm currently between cars. I totaled my Ghibli a couple months ago. A pillar of the community with a promising future stole a car and ran a red light going 80. It tore the front nose of my car completely off and broke both front axles. A witness to the accident told her husband to not stop and help because no one could have possibly survived that crash. Needless to say, I did with relatively few injuries. After the crash, I was able to simply open the door and get out. Yay to Maserati for designing a safe car! Unfortunately the pillar of the community with a promising future who ran a red light in his stolen car needed the jaws of life to extricate him. Immediately after the crash when I was able to think straight I checked on him. He wasn't wearing a seat belt and it was bad. I'll never unsee that.
@@bobcervante3801 Indeed. This happened in LA, though. He likely is out stealing cars at this very moment. LA doesn't protect law abiding citicizens from animals.
@ego8 LOL. Fair enough. Either I commented on the wrong video or something in the video sparked my comment. Not going to watch the video again to see. Thanks for asking!
Go for it! Jeremy Clarkson described the styling of this very car, like the artist was drawing a line and then all of a sudden died in the middle of the stroke. That's a good enough reason alone!
Yeah, you know you're in trouble when your mechanic just shakes his head and asks, "Why?" when you pull up in a newly-purchased car. LOL! That made me laugh too hard, probably.
I remember a time when BMWs with a straight six and a manual transmission used to be high quality and would last forever. What the hell happened to the company? Overly engineered garbage with a bunch of unnecessary tech that craps out as soon as the warranty is over.
BMW was already making crappy V8s at that time. M60/M62 with the timing chain guide failures etc. While they were making awesome M5x series straight sixes which were super reliable
I'm of the opinion that the emblems are designed to fade intentionally, since the cars fall apart quickly BMW doesn't want people recognizing the brand when hoopdied.
This may sound bad, but, I used engine oil stop leak for one complete oil service of about 5k miles. My hope was to expand the valve seals enough for it to stop smoking. I haven't ran the stop leak since and the smoking stopped. A friend of mine tried it and it also stopped the smoking. It doesn't cost much to try it.
Ah yes, the “Bangle Butt.” If his career had taken a different path, we might be talking about “Mercedes Bunz.” ;-) Seriously, I think this is a nice old car that just needs some TLC. But then I can be really generous with Hoovie’s money.
@@mattmatthews5414 Less ugly? How about today? Plus some say that the E63 and E64 are gorgeous (there's a lot of people who think they're ugly as sin though).
I like to see Hoovie going back to his roots of buying the cheapest, crappiest used luxury cars and dumping tons of money into them for our entertainment.
I bought the same car same year plus the SMG trans with 75k miles on it last year. After A LOT of reading how they want to be taken care of(oil change 9 months or earlier and regular coolant changes) I must say after one year no issues with it......love this car....SMG is something to get used to of course....lol
I’ve got a 650i and have had some of these repairs done as well. The good news is there are a few aftermarket options for the valve seals that seem to sure up future issues. Been going for 18 months strong as a daily; All in all, It’s worth it
My son was wishing he could find a deal like that and thinking how cool it would be to drive it to school, until he heard how much the repairs were going to be. He takes his driving test Tuesday. He has a lot to learn about life and hopefully avoiding deal's like this one.
Scrap it, Hoov. That thing will be more of a curse than anything else for you, the person you give it to, the person they give it to, and the junkyard that scraps it in the long run.
5:33 Ahhh...that chime brings back memories. I inherited one of these and a 5 series (his daily driver) from my dad when he died. It was a beautiful car in great condition. However, his stories about the exorbitant repair bills and the many times I saw the 535i on a flatbed, plus our monthly (bonding?) trips to the mechanic spooked me. Had I kept it the car, it would have ended up like this one (in need of repairs I couldn't or wouldn't afford, so I sold it to his best friend. There is no such thing as a cheap BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar etc.
I missed out on one of these last summer it had 60k mikes and cost $13k. Such a good looking car. If you get it sorted out it will be a great starting point for the next owner to continue on with the maintenance and little issues that will pop up. But you would have given the car a start on its life extension. I’m interested if it becomes available. 👍
This car is right up my alley! My E38 was in worse condition and now it's my daily and I'm almost finished with 90s Volvo. I need to find me a cheap 6-series soon
Th fading emblem is a "timed" feature built in. By 100,000 miles, when the car has fallen apart and is blowing smoke they don't want others to be able to tell what kind of car it is.
I'm still happy with my 02 qx4 i got for 2000 bucks. Replaced the alternator and everything works except the tilt headlights (not sure what happened, they worked when i got it) and the passenger seat doesn't go forwards and back (but it's in the perfect spot) has a power steering leak but besides that it drives great. I've put over 10k miles on it no issue.
2:57 people don’t realise that BMW actual designed that rear and with BMW reliability in mind so you hands would fit perfectly for pushing your broken down BMW to the side of the road.
I just repaired the valve stem seals on my car, engine doesn’t have to come out. AGA tool gets it done a lot quicker. That said, with the awful alternator bracket leak…might as well pull it and do a full reseal.
By the very same car brand new and it drove beautifully. The design of the convertible has held up beautifully. It's not a difficult engine to work on. When you consider what 70's era. BMW 2002s are going for, these cars start to make sense.
I have two e65s with over 200,000 miles both daily drivers...idk..but I honestly love the design of the 745 and 645...the body lines are timeless..looking to buy one of these next...😁
I have a 2005 645ci. It has gone through the works mechanically speaking. Just 3 months ago - alternator bracket leak, valve stem seals, timing chain cover leak, head gasket leak, new AC compressor, Oil change and new battery. They pulled the motor out and fixed everything. It was 6200 bucks at AGA in Escondido, Ca. I have rattle canned both the front and rear bumpers in the past and they look fine. Car has 140k miles on it. All these cars have the same problems. Aside from the leaks and normal wear they perform well. Or you can spend 8k on a nice used Honda.
If you think about it, if they are selling for $10,000 all sorted, and it will cost him $5000 to sort it, he's into it for $6900.....so he's in the black by $3100.00.
I bought one at auction as well, but it had a lot more damage. Whole front subframe was cracked, but valve seals were already fixed... Still has bent suspension, broken bumpers and top needs some work. But I just bought some toys from ESS (supercharger) and I plan on seeing how fun I can make my car.. Suspension, wheels, etc. Might as well have some fun with the car before you give it away!
It’s still a beautiful car. Yes it’s a ton of work and I guarantee the transmission will be broken within the next year. BUT I still love the design and purpose. I would love to add it to my collection and bring it completely back to glory. my suggestion is I’ll take it as is and pay for shipping so you don’t have to put another dollar into it.
I would love to have one sorted, I was looking at them but I got scared. If you’ll rescue it, it will make someone very happy, it sure would make me happy. Go for it!
I had the same spec car and I was set to get it back to good but COVID hit and I was was forced to scrap it to pay the bills. Please save it, they're not as bad as they may seem and they're excellent to drive when they actually run! I'd come and buy it from you for what you paid as-is if i could!
Hoovie, just subscribed to help save this old monster. Although they may be "unreliable" at times, I own a '12 X3 and an '06 Z4. Would love to add this to my fleet as well if it goes up for sale. And, for the record, my '06 Z4 is more reliable than my '95 7.3L F350 by a long shot.
@@Jdalio5 I'm running 550i/750i for several years and my friends have another four V8s, so I guess I know a thing or two. Of course you need to put some money and effort in these, but is not as tragic as Hoovie presents it.
@@12gark Depends, some investments are required, but once the engine seals and cooling is renewed, it works fine and if stuff breaks it is mostly similar to other cars. I know of six V8s, all over 250k km (two of them over 600k km) and running fine.
I’ve learned the more basic the trim/model. The better it is. I have a 2wd 04 GMC Envoy. It’s was $2K with 186 at time of purchase. Needed front end work. Oil and tranny fluid change. But it’s a good running car. Had it been 4wd or higher trim I fear it might have been worse.
What I would really like to see is a clapped out Rolls Royce in a demolition derby, it would probably be lot less pathetic to watch. I think a better option would be to have Aging Wheels do a destruction review on this Bavarian crap heap.
It’s still a beautiful car! Mine just rolled over 100K miles and still will do 150mph. I’d love to have it for my other 2004 645ci to keep it company in the garage.
I'm learning about them there's a couple in the family that will be given to me. Automotive repair everybody always finds me. BMW novice but I'm learning.
Yes u should save this BMW because u can do a sick build on like widebody, aftermarket head and rear lights, big Wang, FI exhaust, canards and diffuser for front and rear.
Years ago when I worked as a detailer at a local Honda dealership I got to drive the M6 of this era down to auction and I really enjoyed the car and it was fast! Had the 500hp V10.. And always wanted one after... But hind sight being 20/20... I'd find one of these and just put a Chevy LS1 in it and make it a reliable driver lol
