I agree. I have their 444 marlin ammo with 300 gr Hornady XTP hollow points and they are wicked. They kill on both ends. Great stuff!!

It would be, if it were pushing a full 180 or 200 grain bullet. This stuff has lightwr weight bullets and really should be pushing faster if it were loaded to 10mm Auto's full specs. Still, it's better than most factory "10mm" loads that are just .40S&W in a larger casing and higher price, so points for Steinel.

In all fairness, solid copper moves a little slower for its grain weight due to the longer projectile taking up more case capacity, so this is actually really solid for what it is.

@orpheus280 Wouldn't you just use an equal dimension copper bullet, that would be lighter, 90-135gr, and just push those to pressure? I even have to add, doesn't anything at the muzzle that weighs 100gr, lead or copper, at the muzzle have the same energy? One might slow down quicker, have different metal qualities, but the energy is the same

@barrymccockiner6641 Pressure ramps up faster with the larger, less dense bullet taking up more case capacity, so you won't get the same muzzle energy as an equal weight lead core bullet. Copper is just universally slower at the same weight because the pressure spikes faster.

@barrymccockiner6641 Even if you went with a lighter copper bullet with the same volume, you'd still get less velocity than a lead core bullet of similar mass because copper is harder. It doesn't confirm to bore dimensions and engage the rifling quite as easily as lead core projectiles. This leads to a greater initial pressure spike. Monolithic copper expanding projectiles have unique attributes, but they do behave differently, and it turns out lead is actually a nearly perfect material for projectiles because it is both dense and soft. You have to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both projectile types. Copper has more volume for the same mass, which leads to lower BCs and SDs for the same volume, and is harder, which increases penetration relative to lead core bullets with similar SDs but also increases pressure as the bullet engages the rifling.

There is an upside to having these options that expand well and transfer a lot of energy quickly. It fits when someone wants or needs to limit penetration for whatever reason. Just as hard cast does the opposite. Obviously something in between those extremes would be more ideal for most self defense uses. My preference in this type of testing is 18”-22”. I’d put this ammo on the list for when less depth is the goal.

Great 10mm test as always! I picked up a G20 a month or so ago, you’ve saved me some money on defensive ammo. I’m a JHP guy myself, but as you said it’s hard to ignore the expansion. I’ve always wondered how copper rounds do against harder barriers. Shouldn’t be a big issue for your everyday citizen, but I am curious.

I will be honest, I have not really seen a whole lot that I would refuse to run in 10mm, not to be confused with stuff I would refuse to buy.🤷‍♂ The overwhelming majority are adequate enough to get the job done, but not nescessarily worth the cost. But those solid copper rounds are impressive, especially in the expansion department. Great testing as always👊

I hand load a now unavailable COP copper 140gr HP at around 1350fps from G20. It is one of my favorite for being comfortable to shoot and very accurate. Expansion in water and deer is around .82” Fairly similar to these in terms of penetration and expansion. These should be pretty effective where limited penetration and maximum permanent cavity is a priority. One thing to remember about cooper projectiles is they handle bone and barriers really well…unlike a flattened lead projectile.

@@joneifer8987 I'm very aware of the fact. However, the 10mm and .40 S&W remain identical in respect to their bullet diameter or caliber if you will. Ballistically speaking, neither round actually brings anything new to the firearms table as the old, and sadly mostly forgotten .38-40, even in its black powder loadings could equal either of the "new .40s" while actually being a .40 caliber itself though many see the "38" and assume the bullet was in the .357 range while in reality it was almost identical to the 10mm/40cal of today. The .38-40 was the third most popular handgun and rifle round/cartridge of the 19th century just behind the .44-40 WCF and .45 Colt's.

I own both the G29 and G20 and love them both. Love the disruption these projectiles gave, but since I am concerned with both self defense and woods defense I would need more penetration. Great test.

Like you, I wouldn't go looking for the stuff, but it'll do, mostly. A 160-65gr would give a little more penetration, though the expansion might suffer a little, it'd likely be something a guy would go looking to buy.

And so, I'm now going in search of some in .40S&W. Preferably in either 135gr or 155grn though I would not turn my nose up at something in 165grnish weight and a REAL +P loading. I must admit that I still miss those early Corbon 185 to 200grn 10mm and .45ACP "Flying Ashtray" rounds in +P loadings. If those rounds did not stop a gun fight....You should have brought a MUCH bigger gun to the fight. Excellent video as usual and to be honest I might just have to pick up a (gag) real Glock of compact size in 10mm and a few boxes of Steinel as tested by you for daily carry if I can't find .40S&W as described above.

I'm with you on the penetration but, as you said, at that engergy level, heck, I'd take it, especially since it's so darn hard to find good 10mm ammo that is, in fact, full-house 10mm. I can't help but think this would work well in tight neighborhoods, apartment buildings, and for the small deer we have here on the AL gulf coast. Great video!

Interesting you had some problems with a couple of calibers of Steinel. I had a half box of 458 socom misfires once. Company wanted the lot number off the box and pics but never heard anymore form them. Review was removed from their website.

Works great on it. The only thing I don't like, but it's the same with all brands, is how the glass gets all carboned up and needs to be cleaned with the lens out past the muzzle. I have a little compact one on a couple of full size guns because of that. It looks kinda goofy but keeps the lens clean.

Somewhat of an overachiever in the expansion dept if you ask me. Those rounds look like the bit on a tunneling machine. Keep in mind projectiles travel further in jelly than tissue.

In the member section. One commenter stated that the reason. Why the 10mm bullet came a little short of its true perfomance potential. Is because the copper bullet sits deeper into the casing. Leaving less room for gunpowder. If the factore gunpowder was replaced with. Magnum or nitro express. That 10mm bullet may exceed the 700 foot pound of muzzle energy. Out of a firearm with a 5" to 6" barrel. At this point the 10mm should nearing .357 magnum 800 foot pound level. While having much greater capacity. Add that to the .8 and .9 expansion. Which could only be achieved. By a few top performing .45 +P or .45 super ammunition. I am highly impressed with this ammunition.

That was impressive expansion and wound tracks for sure! I’m always with you on the penetration though. This would be a top contender if it got a couple more inches. But good performance nonetheless. I wonder if a 10 mil carbine would cause pedals to break off or fold back further and go deeper 🤔. Awesome test 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

If they would limit expansion a bit ~.75 or so it would probably penetrate a good bit more and still be a 3/4" ninja star spinning at thousands of rpm! I love my critical duty and HST's but the all copper expanders are getting performance in gel and street credentials that are getting hard to ignore!

I've ran across this ammo online but couldn't find anyone testing them. They definitely look neat! Crossing fingers for the G9 Outdoorsmen in 10MM in a future video. Bullets are a neat design but velocity on paper poor.
