Can Stop-Slip Save this Transmission?

This Toyota Camry got stuck in the snow and burnt up its transmission. The fluid was very dark and smell burnt. In an effort to save this high mileage vehicle, we drain the transmission fluid, drop the transmission pan, clean the magnets and transmission filter. In addition, the valve body is dropped out and all the solenoids were tested for function, cleaned and reassembled.
The transmission fluid in the system was replaced, and flushed through the cooler lines with clean fresh fluid. Lucas stop-slip was added as an additive to see if it would help this failing transmission.
In conclusion, the fluid change and clean-out ultimately did not save the transmission, but it did allow the vehicle to move forward under its own power. Watch the previous video of the symptoms on this car here:

Another great video! Keep 'em coming. I hope you don't run out of toothbrushes! I think over 90% of current manual and automatic transmissions are made by Aisin, a division of Toyota, and most, if not all, of the automatic ones require Aisin/Toyota T-4 spec ATF which is not full synthetic. Changing this fluid regularly is critical to the life of the transmission - especially if you are hard on it. My VW Rabbit's VW 09G automatic transmission (Tiptronic semi-auto) is made by Aisin and takes the same fluid. When I bought it with 142K miles on it, the shifts were very hard. I drained the fluid, dropped the pan, draining more fluid, changed the filter and replaced the fluid according to VW's instructions which were tedious, time consuming and Aisin T-4 ATF consuming. (Just draining the pan gets 2.5 quarts and I changed 3 times that amount following this procedure. The shifting improvement were very good, but still not quite what I wanted. Since then, I changed the ATF pan (2.5 quarts) at 15K mile intervals using a very popular full synthetic which meets the T-4 specs. The improvement after each change was better each time. Now that I am satisfied with the results at 165K miles, I will switch to 30K mile intervals. I'm not saying this will make my Aisin auto transmission bomb-proof but it should lengthen the life of it as long as I don't abuse it. Supposedly, this transmission is a weak spot in the VW but it works perfectly now.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 Год назад
Awesome. Didn't know Aisin makes VW stuff. I thought ZF would
@boomerguy9935
@boomerguy9935 Год назад
@@speedkar99 The VW 09G automatic transmission is also called the Aisin-Warner TF-60SN transmission. Even though Aisin is a division of Toyota, it is a separate entity and has been making manual and automatic transmissions (not sure of CVT's) and all the required fluids for them for almost all of the cars in the world for a very long time. The Mini, Miata and Honda S2000 6-speed manual transmissions were by Aisin. The 5-speed Miata was by Mazda. I've used the appropriate spec AMSOIL fluids in all of my manual RWD truck and car transmissions, manual FWD transaxles, automatic FWD transaxles and CVT FWD transaxles with great improvement in every one of them. All of them were broken in on the OEM fluids before I switched to AMSOIL and I could tell the difference in shifting. i am not an AMSOIL dealer and I don't get paid to say this...I just like the stuff.

If you mix the stop slip with ATF it pours faster. Pour a little out. Put ATF in with stop slip. Put on cap & shake. Then it will pour faster. I have the 05 2.4 literr before the oil ring problem with the U251 Toyota 5 speed automatic. I watched this to see how easy the trans pan is to drop. I need to do that motor mount on mine so my lazy-meter was accurate, it can wait til summer.

nice video! and, no, it wasn't a waste of time and glad you did it, especially in the cold... I always thought you should never do an ATF flush because it can push tiny material into all the crevices of the AT.... I probably would have drained out enough fluid to add in some of the stop slip stuff and see how it did. If that didn't do anything, I would have drained out all the fluid, dropped the pan, cleaned the pan and magnets, put a new filter back on and then filled it back up with OEM ATF. If that wouldn't do it, then I would just call it a day and scrap that camry with a beautifully running engine *tear drops* Love your videos and keep up the great work!

The part at 2:22 is the brake seal for the intermediate clutch (2nd gear) it’s located between the VB and case. Someone has likely been inside this transaxle and it fell out when the valvebody was down. You’ll have a big leak in 2nd and likely burn up 2nd clutches pretty fast. The U150 series was more reliable than the U140 but mileage gets them all. They are expensive to rebuild and this one is way far gone. Not Economically Feasible to Rebuild. Too bad salvage prices for used units are climbing to stupid levels in some places.

A friend of mine calls me around a month ago telling me that they dropped GMC Savana after the costumer tried to move the van out of the snow. By rocking it back and forth by switching rapidly from Drive to Reverse he blew the gears inside. Not the first truck or van tranny that we replaced or 'our' tranny man rebuilt. Also Aisin (their transmissions more and more often is used in European and American cars) recommends to change the ATF every 80k km. As far as Lifetime fluid listed in some vehicle specs, it's more of a marketing trick, because all automatic transmission manufacturers recommend ATF change. That actually happened to my father's older VW Jetta with the Lifetime ATF - during one week the tranny practically quit, but after fluid change it magically came back to life.

You need to remove the sub-frame and steering rack anyway to replace the steering rack that always leaks in these 😉 Mine leaks but it’s a small leak and hopefully won’t need to be replaced. Maybe you can break loose or off those exhaust bolts without a torch. Maybe a cold chisel? Anyway, not worth your time and expense as you already said in another video.

@@speedkar99 that is slightly bizarre. FYI you can find pretty good step by step rebuild videos for these things. Once you tear it down you can see if it makes sense to get a kit. Certain parts are more expensive than others, and if there’s any damage to the case internally it’s somewhat junk.

It started slipping a month ago. When I change speeds, I need to let go the gas pedal or else the RPM goes up to in between 2 or 3. If I am extremely gentle on the gas pecal, can I go on for at least let's say 10 000 kms (6 000 miles)?
