Tucked away down a grassy boreen stands the now-abandoned church of St Helen, Moviddy, County Cork (closed for services 1961, unroofed 1968). The surrounding graveyard contains this early 18th century mausoleum (also now without a roof) constructed by the Bailey family who were then living close by in Castlemore Castle. Inside the little building, the south wall is dominated by a large memorial carrying the following inscription: ‘This monument erected at the cost of Mrs Anne Bayly widow of John Bayly of Castlemore Esquire to preserve his memory, who died the 15th of June Anno Christi, 1719. He was a gent who had the true interest of his country at heart. At the revolution he served in person in the wars of Ireland, till the kingdom was reduced to peace and quietness. Quitting the war he returned to his wife and children and shewed himself as good a husband as indulgent a father as he was a true subject being honored with a commission of the peace. He always administered justice so uprightly that he never blemished his commission and dyed lamented by all good men who did know him.’
Today we explore an abandoned Church of Ireland church in Co. Cork, We found lots of amazing old crypts and mausoleums here but sadly it's in a very bad state, not the first time we have found an old graveyard like this.

About a hundred years ago grave robbing for valuables was rife. This graveyard looks like something like that happened. It’s so sad to see that these poor souls last resting places were disrespected and vandalised 😢 Thank you for sharing 😊

I'm a new subscriber. I live in Georgia, United States. Up in the mountains. There is a graveyard not far from. us, in which my 4th great grandmother is laid to rest. Fascinating that you go around to these graveyards. They are so beautiful. This one is amazing. Think how it must have been when the Church was still active and whole. What a feast for the eyes. The last grave being just such a short time ago. It must have been tricky digging that grave and getting the casket there. Must be such a feeling of peace in these graveyards. Thank you for making this possible. I do family genealogy research so seeing old graves really makes the research into the lives of people so real.

The church ruins were beautiful. I’m always blown away by crypts open to the elements. So sad how there has been no care. And forgive my ignorance to how things were done back in the day but when there is a grave with the names of parents and all their children. Does it mean they are all buried there? If so that’s pretty amazing. Great video ♥️

Yes mostly they are buried all together, we don't use liners here, just into the ground x

@@SerenitySueGraveyards So since you do not use liners over there, ( I live in Oregon, USA by the way ) as the coffins disintegrate, all the remains mix together? Is that the idea for those large family graves?

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Thank you again Sue, for your time and patience with my questions. It sounds like burials over there 100 or more years ago were pretty much natural burials. No liners, no embalming fluids, pretty much everything goes back to the ground, except for bones, coffin handles, and what jewelry was buried with the deceased. No environmental hazards there. Take care Sue.

Sue, I really enjoyed this fantastic video. When my uncle was living, he use to troll old cemeteries and he told me that you can find out more about a person in death than when that person was alive. He loved the stories on the gravestones. This cemetery is perfect for a horror story or movie. We have a lot of dilapidated old cemeteries like this in the states. Unless there is a private organization or volunteers, the cemeteries are left to their own devises. I live near a neighborhood where the cemetery is in the back yard of a residence. The graves are back from the 1700's

I have a question. What happened to the many thousands of people who could not afford a headstone when they died? I have watched Sidestep Adventures of the areas here in Georgia of enslaved peoples graves and they were just marked with field stones at the head and foot. No engravings at all. I just wondered about the poor people in Ireland. I love your videos.

Hey Carole, some just have a simple field stones too, I've come to spot them easily now and most of our older cemeteries have them, also in some places you'll see just a burial mound, no marker or anything, then there are some who have a little iron cross, or a hand made timber cross, it's always sad

ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR AMAZING JOURNEYS! That church is absolutely stunning! Only thing I will say is that grave with that photo was interesting! If I was the family and bought a gorgeous photo - should have glued it on or something so it doesn’t vanish?! With the railing is there any official significance for them? I am planning my death stuff and would love your suggestions? Is that possible?
@SerenitySueGraveyards
@SerenitySueGraveyards 10 месяцев назад
There's no real meaning about the rails, they were really popular in the late 1800s early 1900s more decorative I'd imagine as I've seen different styles..I love them myself and if I could I'd like to have some around my grave, although I'd imagine that would be very expensive now..the only other point I'd make is this, did the rail somehow show the boundary of the grave?? Maybe, as on occasion I've noticed these rails but no headstone

Oh Sue and Cathal! What epic adventures you manage to take us on!! Methinks your a bit of a daredevil Sue, as you seem quite game for squirrelling into places to investigate etc. That church is really beautiful, and just imagine the sun light reflecting when all those little lattice panes of glass were still in place. The tree looks stunning growing inside the church like that JUST NOW!! But sadly if it’s allowed to keep growing without being taken down, the strength of it will push those walls down sadly. What’s the building you went in and were trying to translate for us? A memorial? So no burial in there then?……but wait a second and Sue’s antennae starts twitching as she senses crypts close by! ….By the way did you think any more about getting an endoscope camera with light? I’ve seen a Drapet waterproof one on Amazon for only about £24….you could push that into some of the crypt and mausoleums where there is just a hole, to see in, but here they must have known you were coming! And all opened up for you! Goodness me! I’ve never seen so many left open like that….very inviting for vandals sadly unless you can let someone know before you go home so they get secured! Although very sadly it looks like Vandals best you to it…how sad and how sick of them to do that to someone’s late family. Well done both of you…it was really fascinating, except for the vandal damage. Bless you both! Godbless! 😘😘 love Helen 🙋‍♀️💐xx

It’s hard to imagine someone breaking into a crypt or coffin. Here in America I’ve seen cemeteries with pushed over and broken tomb stones. It is a good example of the lack of values in our society. I travel to many cemeteries with my Grandparents looking for relatives and admiring the beauty of the stones and plants. Here where I live in South Eastern Pennsylvania we have names of townships like Colerain, Donegal, Drumore, Oxford, Nottingham and Little Britain. I suppose you can guess where the folks who settled this area were from, including my GGGGrandfather from Ireland. Thank You Kindly for this beautiful tour! I would have Loved to see the church when it was intact with the lovely windows. I’ll bet the woodwork was splendid! Peace, Many Blessings and Joy of Being! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

We have a similar problem here in the US with vandalism in cemeteries. They'll be broken open, remains disturbed. The cemeteries will seal them up with concrete blocks, but the vandals come back with sledge hammers. Some places I know have not a single intact crypt. Go raibh maith agat for a great video, but especially for the respect you show for the departed.

Looks like the main church windows were cleanly removed at some point, perhaps before they were broken or overly damaged?? Another marvellous place.

Hello Sue, seems like the last two buried wete the last of their family. So abandoned all is what happened. I feel like the last two buried were so old, they did not even know about vandalism. Whatever the case may be, it is a very sad thing to see. Until your channel the pnly vandalism I have ever seen was gate painting with what the paint vandels call tags here in America. Thank you for sharing. 😢

Whoever commits these acts of gross vandalism....I have no idea how they sleep at night. Absolutely disgusting. I have to say you guys have more courage than me, I don't think I could walk around them in near darkness. Though in all honesty you have nothing to fear from the dead.

If someone broke in and damaged the coffins hope they are haunted by the ones they disturbed. Maybe hiking boots would help your ankles. Hey from Texas❤️

This is making me cry. Such disrespect there ..even if it were done years ago its wrong. And I hope whoever did something like that will be haunted for the rest of their lives. Jerks probably collecting the skulls for treasures. So utterly shameful ..the age of the deceased is also amazing. USA sure doesnt have tombstones with that many of those dates on them..thank you for sharing this stunning cemetery

The cemetary is in a very bad shape and in a state of disrepair, must be victims of vandalism & tomb robbers in the past, most of the graves are over 200 years old, thanks for sharing & Rest in peace to the poor souls Amen 🙏🙏🙏

Wow my great grandfather was from Cork he went to America because of the troubles and married a half breed Cherokee Indian. Their only son joined the US airforce and was stationed in England where he met and married my grandmother they had two sons the youngest being my dad. It would be amazing if you came across any graves of my ancestors but I haven't found out who they were

At some point there might have been a boiler with radiator pipes. I imagine if there is a cavity under the church that would have housed the boiler. I imagine it used coal. Love your channel, I love graveyards and mausoleums

These old turn of the century churches had underground vaults for priests early in the 1600s and earlier. some of these graves over time due to how people were buried have been plundered back then people were buried with their Jewelry.
