I love all of your strategic recommendations around finding other organized processes that we can use as memory structures. Ideas like using the ABCs, or the lyrics of a song, or the series of plot points in our favorite story. So useful and so powerful, and we can use our associative tools for each of them! This just gets simpler and more flexible the more I learn! 谢谢老师!

That's great to hear, John. It is like Zen Archery, in its way, a simple gesture that looks like one movement in a process that involves multiple things working together all at once. Happy practicing!

This is useful in general even for those with full use of our hands. I've been practicing observing and drawing for a while now by using a memory palace to remember details from an image(simple nature scenes for now) and then draw them again from memory. This has been improving the vividness of my mental imagery, my drawing skills are improving and it seems like it is getting easier and easier for me to use memory palaces in contexts that have little to do with drawing. I just doubled my daily practice from 30 minutes to an hour and I think starting tomorrow I'll add some time where I mentally visualize myself drawing as well as actually drawing.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 2 года назад
Thanks for this feedback. Yes, I can imagine visualizing oneself drawing would be useful. I'm going to give this approach an experiment myself and see if it helps bring an edge to my own drawing. I just picked it up again and am quite rusty compared to where I'd previously gotten.

great idea to visualize yourself drawing before actually drawing like the painters or artists do. some of us forget to dive deeply into it like that. our physical eyes are so used to seeing what's in front of us without actually thinking and taking the time to admire it.

Okay Anthony, great Video. For anyone who likes music: how about a CD memory or mind palace. This is really easy to do. Take your favorite CD and use he tracks (numbers only) to have as your locations: example: Dire straits debut album has 9 tracks on it meaning you have 9 locations for you to memorize 9 pieces of info or what ever you want to. And so on and so on. I hope this helps out.

Thanks for this. The technique applies to learning because vocabulary and phrases can be layered into Memory Palaces. Then, when reviewing, you get the words and phrases into long term memory a lot faster. There’s oodles of science, thousands of years of tradition and decades of memory competitions to refer to along with how language learners use them. There are loads of videos about that on this channel. What language are you learning? There might be one that uses your current learning project as an example. 🙏

Hi my name is Victor Stimpert I also am in a wheelchair and I am in capable of drawing. I wanted to leave a comment about what you referenced about dictation software. I think it is a brilliant idea with a couple caveats and they are as follows as long as the person who uses the dictation software understands that they will have to train the software before using it for such a task. I know this from experience because I use dictation software myself a person usually has to spell peoples names into the software especially unique names such as phosphorus. I have a question regarding a message that I find used for using and I wanted your thoughts on it if you don’t mind my method that I use is a visit a place that I’ve want to use as my memory palace memorize and the layout as much as I can and determine what I want to put there and then I go back a little later and I’ll see what I can remember based on what I put where what do you think I look forward to hearing your response at what I have said thank you for your time and you have great videos as always.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 2 года назад
Thank you so much for your feedback. Yes, dictation software needs training and is not without its quirks. It can also chew up your voice box if dictating for long hours. I’m not sure I fully understand the process you described, but it sounds good. My suggested policy is to focus on outcomes. Study those and see which parts of the process are essential and which can be weened away. Over time, this will lead to a highly refined process. Then, adding new experiments will create challenges that increase your skills. Does this way of looking at things sound good? 🧲

Hi, Dr. Anthony ! I saw a comment you replied in 2018 suggesting that the closest you've come to developing perfect pitch was by matching notes after internalising songs .Is it just restricted to junior students ? Songs I've remembered are usually played back in random keys in my head... Would someone like me who picks up music study in adulthood only end up developing relative pitch through this method?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM I'm afraid I haven't experimented enough to give an answer, being a mere fledgling when it comes to mnemonics. I've been trying spaced repetition and classical conditioning for a few weeks which enables me to recall a C with a success rate of around 70% ; however most of the time the recalling is not instantaneous but deliberate . I'll keep exploring so that hopefully one day I can think about music pieces in correct pitch.

is it possible for you to create a Facebook group and we share how memory palace, and all the mnemonic helped us in our lifetime. Me, myself I remember struggling in grammar school and had to repeat a grade and then got to high school and things were even harder, and then starting college classes was no joke. I didn't know about memory palaces then, and stuff until I got older, and also, I'm the only girl in the family and didn't have many to be close to in this crazy world we live in. Now in 2022 I have a daughter, they don't even have physical books in her class, they only have pdf files, or zoom for the work they do. That makes very different when there isn't a physical book in hand. like I use to take the sticky notes and place them in the book to just remember certain stuff, she doesn't have that option, if she wanted to glance at the book while on the bus, or a plane, or in the car, she couldn't because they don't have a physical book so now she has to glance at everything and hope she remembers biology, chemistry, history, business classes in her first year of high school. I'm so praying she passes, because it's been a rough start for her with the grades. I have to tell her to breath, relax and think of everything she possibly can as images in the book, and break them down into smaller parts.

Thanks for asking about this. My "Inner Circle" monthly group coaching program has an FB group. But mostly we just meet in Zoom to go over how we use memory techiques together. It's much more engaging that way. I'm sorry to hear about what is happening in schools with everything going online. Hopefully things will work out for future generations, but it's looking dire in many ways. Best to you and her, and I hope you will invest in becoming a master of memory yourself so you can guide her directly.

It doesn't take 90 days to master the Memory Palace technique. But from a neuroscientific basis it does take 90 days before it's even possible to explore its value and have the habits take hold. And it's not the "old college try" unless it's at least for a semester. Happy to hear about the specific steps you've followed so far. Can I get your opinion on Competency-based learning vs Traditional based learning?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 2 года назад
Thanks for asking about this. How are you defining these terms?
@calisthenicarts312
@calisthenicarts312 2 года назад
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM competency based learning is similar to the Feynman technique in which the students demonstrate or teach the teacher their mastery of a subject through demonstration. Mainly the teacher are concern with students mastering the fundamentals or principles of a subject because it gives the student competency in the subject. Traditional based learning is the used of test, exams or any of these metrics which requires the students to memorize information to pass a test. Many students after completing school tend to forget most of the information. I’m about to apply to a University uses the competency based model, they don’t have homework or test. Students pass courses by demonstrating their mastery of courses through demonstration or teaching back.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 2 года назад
Thanks for clarifying. I'm not sure I have an opinion about these things because highly competent individuals tend to test themselves. Thus, it's not clear to me that there are as many meaningful differences between these categories as it might seem. Your thoughts?
@calisthenicarts312
@calisthenicarts312 2 года назад
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM I look at it on different levels. My focus is on the learning aspect. If I had zero knowledge and I want to learn as quickly as possible at a deep level. I wanted to test myself, I probably resort to rote learning. If I apply metric system, I be using rehearsal to learn bunch of concepts not really sure how it all applies. Similar to your advice on seeking to learn concepts of memory palace vs actual using memory palace. Competency based learning seem to force application more than concepts. Using Memory palace as an example instead of testing on concepts of memory palace, students demonstrate application of memory palace. Connecting pieces in their mind to show actual competency of it. Seems to me competency based learning re enforce application. This might just increase the speed to learning the information vs rehearsal of information that haven’t completely put all the pieces together.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 2 года назад
This is very interesting, especially when we narrow in on your use of the word "if." Is it really possible to have zero knowledge of a thing? For example, if you get interested in astrobiology, you must have knowledge enough that such a thing exists, meaning that zero knowledge was only fleeting and all further knowledge is premised upon presence rather than absence. One might be tempted to think that this line of thinking is just intellectual noodling, but I think it's a huge part of what can help us moving forward, especially when it comes to memory techniques. Memory techniques help us rapidly build knowledge and skills precisely because we eliminate the fantasy of "zero knowledge" and build upon what is already there, rather than what isn't. And in all of us capable of watching videos and clickety-clacking conversations like these, tremendous competence is just waiting to be extended. And whether or not this or that school includes tests or not does not reduce the value of testing as a potential tool, nor does it mean that one needs to refer to rote learning as a means of helping pass such tests. The individual seems to me much more central than the nature of the program, so I would see the world for what it is: A great lottery in which sometimes the pieces fit and other times they do not. And the internet, provided it can remain free has already proven itself as an excellent means of helping more people win the lottery much more often. What do you think? :-)
