Wow awesome breakdown!! I’ve never even thought about intentionally doing this stuff but it is true, I do most of these things in each video. Fun fact: I actually did film across multiple days!! Thanks for making this I’m flattered it was super fun to watch!
I'd wondered if it was intentional or if you're just a very nautral storyteller so that's really cool it comes naturally to you. Glad you liked it 😃I'd never really expected you to find it.
You’re a a powerful creator, Shelby. I’m happy to see your wonderful response to Ed’s genius touch on your amazing piece. Keep growing and keep making more awesome content. Eternal Blessings.
Actually, everyone seems to be hacking quality. It's called entertainment. It is a facade for quality, useful content. You get to the end, having watched and are left with empty hands. They've delivered nothing useful.
This creator has had several huge channels . It definitely will do well. So don't be so concerned about it. It seems a lot of people look at the numbers more than the content. Too many wannabes all over the you tube junkyard
The “Struggling to get more watchtime” video caused me to look at movies and television instead of other RU-vid channels for editing ideas. This video just confirmed what I found: keep the pace moving with 3-5 second clips. Going to be tough and delay my next release by a few days or a week but, damn me, I’m hyped to try out these techniques. Thanks!
You know what. I started ignoring your videos, why?. IT'S SSOOO ENGAGING to the point where I waste alot of time watching a video after another and not focus on making my own videos. You're the man. You literally earned it.
How do you not have more subs?!? Great vid (and have been binging over the last few days since seeing the first). Would love to see a video on how to consciously work these tips (making better quality videos) into a production process.
MASSIVE THANKS. I released my latest video using pretty much ALL your tips. The result... average percentage viewed leaped from the usual 35.6% to a massive 68.1% Plus no more nosedive after the first 20 seconds! Genius, thanks again.
You can clearly see and feel a big improvement in your new videos. In this one I really felt glued to the screen because of all the quick edits and overlays. Great job! Much more interesting than before. I know how much more work this is than simpler talking head videos. The effort is appreciated. And great practical tips to boot! 👍👍
What I love about the tips you give is that they are so much more in depth than what I have heard from other retention advice videos. (I’ve heard about b-roll and story telling, but you explained it so much better!) It’s great how you analyzed and broke down Shelby’s video for us to see what exactly helped keep her retention rate high, and then used a lot of those same principles in your video as you were explaining these concepts. I’m definitely going to try this!
I started working on my retention and the best thing I did was cut the intro and outro. Nobody wants to watch opening and closing credits on YT. We really don't want to watch credits on TV either. The big drops at the beginning and end are gone! My retention went from 50% to 70%. Still working on it, but a good start. 😎
I just wanted to say thank you for making videos that actually explain how to make better videos, and not just ramble about nothing at all. Making them entertaining all at the same time. Your awesome man keep up the amazing work new sub and fan.
Honestly, these analysis videos are a head and shoulder better than any other "get good at RU-vid" channels out there. the content is a gold mine and ed hits the NAIL on the head every video I watch
yo this is so underrated, the last few minutes really motivated me a lot and these tips were so helpful, totally gonna try them in my next video, thanks!
Your tips on how to grow a channel by focusing on the audience is fantastic. I've watched a few of your vids and your advice is actually useful, rather than just telling me i need a good idea, a good title and a thumbnail.
Hey Ed! It's really awesome how most of your videos are the exact example of what you are trying to explain. In this one a lot of b-roll and visual narrative. Nailed it
I only found your channel but already learnt a lot by watching 2 of your videos. I admit that I watched Shelby a lot and unconsciously got my attention but now I understand what things I need to focus on to level up my RU-vid game. Thank you
My retention has consistenly averaged about 30%. After implementing just the story telling aspect at the beginning of the video, my newest video is at 50% retention. I didn't even do anything different past the 1 minute mark, just added a story to the beginning. Now that I know this works, time to work on the remaining bits of my video for over 50% retention :) Thank you!
I've just found your channel and now I keep watching a lot of your videos... Your editing style combined with your content is super high level. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. :)
This is an exceptional video in my opinion. Great pace, great information and shot and edited to a very high standard. This is an awesome visual and educational experience. I feel you really raised the bar with this one, great work
I have to say, i don't normally comment on yt videos but your channel is honestly one of the best i've ever watched. You bring so much value aswell as producing quality & engaging content. Thank you & keep it up!
You always get at least 90% retention from me Ed, but this video got 100%! Nicely done, throwing in tutorials along with top advice and even some story. Good pace and I’ll be using these techniques myself 👍
Well - I watched 100% of this video! So your attempt to implement these strategies worked 💫 I am definitely going to start small, and try to implement these progressively as I hone my editing skills. So thank you ❣️
Can't stop watching your content👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Filled about three pages on how I could make simple reaction/analysis videos visually more interesting. THANK YOU 💚 You're right, it is so much more work but in the long run it'll pay off. Hopefully 😊
My low retention rates were driving me nuts and I felt that I stuck, no matter how hard I tried. Very frustrating. Now I understand what I need to do better and where I can improve. Thank you so much for this great breakdown.
What an excellent video full of awesome insights! The best part is I shot a few of these things this past weekend after realizing I need to level up my editing game on this channel for more success. Thank you for all you do 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Always sit down with the intention of watching one of your videos with a cup of tea, and here I am three videos later. You've helped me improve my RU-vid channel so much in just a month! 👏🏼👏🏼
This was really the video I should have watched years back! Hit the nail on the head, my head! Thank you so much for this, as my videos are simple fade in and fade out, and retention is poor, which is kinda tough but real. I’m going to work on this, wish me luck 😂
I remember Shelby’s video around 3 yrs ago about starting a RU-vid channel. It was a long video but when it was over I learned a lot but wanted more so I keep watching it over and over and I learned more every single time.
Tudo o que eu precisava para melhorar meu canal encontrei nesse video. Obrigado por compartilhar seu conhecimento adquirido em criar videos. I love your content. The RU-vid's theachers in Brazil is boring and lazy.
blame tv, film, and basically all forms of media. Free media takes a harder hit and over uses it because when its free vs spending $20 to see it on demand or in a theater, we look for any reason to abandon and go to the next thing to keep our attention. everything follows this format from the news to shows on Netflix, its part of cinema.
Still trying to figure out how to incorporate a lot of this stuff into my channel, but easily one of my favorite channels I've recently found. Keep slaaaayin.
Man this will be downloaded and my bible for now on, I need to improve retention and this video will help a LOT ! thanks man for all you do and keep it up !
I love how you actually show EXAMPLES of other creators using these techniques. No other “RU-vid Expert” on RU-vid gives such a thought out in depth breakdown.
Dude you are ridiculously amazing, love your videos, you are giving such a new perspective than the main you tubers who teach how to grow a RU-vid channel. You rock!
This was also interesting to watch. I am working really hard on my editing. I tell stories for a living but not able to edit in such a way that it keeps my viewers watching. Thanks for this I am so blessed watching this
You know what I really Like best about videos like this?.... that little re-energizing feeling of inspiration. I edited a video last night till 1 in the morning and got nowhere due to software hiccups. I have to start over tonight, but now I can't wait to get home, and get after it. Have a great day!
I hit the like button the moment to mentioned you had to watch one video over and over and over for research. That’s dedication. Thank you for breaking this down
My man - I’ve watched a lot of content about RU-vid growth and you’re the only one that makes this relatively dry info entertaining and packed with story. Thank you sir - my Apple notes is littered with scribbles of mine from watching/learning from you!
I love how in the beginning you said that the best creators do storytelling and we barely even realize it.. So true. Im just zeroing in on this and ive been using RU-vid forever. 👍🏾👍🏾
Your videos are absolutely amazing, been binge watching a lot of them and they all have amazing tips and info for someone like me who is completely new to this world of creating youtube content
Ed is so so so much more valuable of a guide through the small youtuber process than think media and Sean canell will ever be to me - I'm so greatful for your videos 🔥🔥
I've probably watched..........too many to count...videos on increasing subs, viewers and retention. It gets a little overwhelming, but this is a marathon and not a sprint. Thank you for this video. All the best to everyone with channels. Don't give up.
I took all the motion out of some still photos in a recent video thinking "this will just annoy the viewers," but lesson learned (one of many) ... wish I had watched this a few weeks ago. Thanks for all of the quality info and the knowledge you share!
So - just so you know - your videos have a unique characteristic that I'm sure you are aware of, but I wanted to share: They are VERY re-watchable. As I've progressed in my own learning about RU-vid (and that's a journey that's at its very start) - I find that I'm coming back to your videos to either reinforce or revisit the advice you give. For example, this video was a bit over my head in terms of skills I needed to develop when you first released it. That's on me, but you can't learn everything in a day. Today I watched this video - and there's one simple takeaway I'm going to try. Once that's done, I think I'll be back for more. Long story short - thank you for exceptional content.
It’s amazing just how good the top level creators actually are. I didn’t notice any of this before…. Just watched the videos and enjoyed them… now I realize how pro the good creators really are. Lots of hard work 👍
Honestly that slight movement trick is MASSIVE! I just added it into my newest video and I can see the difference. So much more entertaining... I didn't even know of this.
Not gonna lie, your lighting setup for the talking head bit is really, really good. Perfect key, with dramatic shadows but not too dark, subtle kicker and great contrasty tungsten practical. It makes my inner DP squeal with glee.
You get 100% retention from me always 🤣 you always seem to deliver epic content at the perfect time. In the past I used to just listen while I was chopping veg or doing dishes 🤣 I'm a working mum with zero time so I have to multitask 24/7 but lately your videos got even more epic and I am actually watching 👀 🤣 for me to watch anything you have to be insanely awesome so well done, you are educating and entertaining all at the same time. There's so many epic points here I'm also having to take notes and I shall try my best to implement! Genius. Just in case you didn't already know: genius!
I do that a lot too with not watching and listening in the background, which Is funny because that tells youtube 100% retention when really it's hardly any. Good to know the extra efforts helping you focus :)
