Can the 2023 Nissan 400Z be improved? | Chip Foose Draws A Car - Ep. 28

As the world anticipates the 2023 Nissan Z, we thought we’d let Chip Foose have a go at making his own version... on paper. Chip is quite fond of the design of the original first generation 240Z and looks to modify Nissan's seventh generation Z car (and yes, this one is just called the "Z" as opposed to continuing the trend from 280ZX, 300ZX, 350Z, 370Z, etc.). What do you think? Is the 2023 Nissan Z perfect as is? Or would you rather have Chip's more heritage-inspired design?

I like Chips inputs. However, (and this is where the 'designers' will be separated from the engineers) this Z is 100% based on the structural underpinnings and chassis of the old 370Z, to keep costs down obviously. This forced NISSAN to keep the short and bulky proportions that the 370Z gained over the 350z, which was more stretched.
@Timmayytoo
@Timmayytoo 2 года назад
Perfectly stated! You can see the b-pillar/quarter window are identical to the 370 - that isn't by choice. I think Nissan's designer did a pretty good job given those constraints. I'm not completely satisfied with the front grille opening, but overall I think it's an improvement on the 350 & 370.

His version looks wayyyy better, and this is coming from a z owner (350). The front and rear bumpers of the nissan version are a mess. Door handle still looks out of place too. Nissan obviously tried to add some nostalgic heritage, but it looks like a 10 year old made that design; it's all over the place. Probably doesn't help that it's still based off a 20 year old platform. When they open the car door, I still see plastic components from my 16 year old version. Made as cheaply as possible by the lowest bidder. Can be yours starting at $40,000. If you can afford that, just get a used C7 vette.

@@papayaman123 Nah I dont think he was. It was a Japanse 'Honor and Pride' thing. Very toxic habit of Japanese people in the higher ranks of society. In Japanese international business culture, there should always be a Japanse Manager on the highest rank of every department. Even if this limits the internal communications (i.e. Language barriers). Whenever mistakes are made; the one non-Japanese sub-manager below will get sacked. Thats how they work. Ghosn was a good example of this: He was responsible for the merger between Renault & Nissan, but always had a full board of Japanese execs to deal with from Nissan side. Then the Share split between Renault & Nissan went sour, after the French Government changed one of their laws, resulting in Renault having a higher share in Nissan than vice versa. The japanese execs in the board held Ghosn responsible but obviously could not pin him for anything since it was initiated by the French Government. So (i believe) they went on a dark paper trail and frame him for the stuff he is now being accused of. Maybe he did not do enough to stop the French government, and thats why they went ham. But trust me; that man did not need to have those extra couple of millions in declarations. He already swam in money. If you dig deep enough you will always find something. And thats what they did.

We got six years of the Z32. Car was near the end of its production run anyway. Nissan didn't anticipate US OBD-II and it happened in the middle of the specialty coupe sales slump. It wasn't just the Z32. The Toyota Supra, Ford Thunderbird, 240SX, 200SX (Sentra coupe), and lots of others bit the dust. The Z32 was too special and an already expensive car kept getting more out of reach of its buyers.

@@EM-km8em It didn’t inspire Lamborghini. Marcello Gandini was the original designer of the Diablo. He also designed the Countach. Chrysler owned Lamborghini at the time, and had their designers do a slight redesign of Gandini’s design. He didn’t like that. Lamborghini needed headlights because their Popup headlights were against US regulations, just like the C5 Corvette’s and the RX-7. The 300ZX headlights fit perfectly.

The rear end on this looks great, but the front end looks like a generic "Japanese Import Car" from a video game. Foose is right on. The new 400 is more of an odd caricature of the 370 and not a proper homage to the original 240. A full retro design with the elongated front end and circular headlights would have been better received than what was finalized.

The kink in the roofline makes the car look hunched and sluggish, the B pillar is too small, the changes to the rear fenders and side skirts make the car have a very grocery getter look - not nimble at all. @@jaycreate7701 Well most of the enjoyment I receive from driving cars comes from 'The driving feel'. To say that it is just 'speed' or 'acceleration' would not encompass that feeling. The way a car feels to drive comes down to the power, sure... but importantly (among other things), the weight (and feel of movement related to that), the visceral feel of the sound and revs and most importantly by far for me, the manual transmission. Personally, automatic cars provide little to no joy for me to drive. I have yet to find a car (regardless of ICE or electric) that provides the stimulation of driving a manual performance car. To ask why it would matter if it were electric, just tells the story of how different we see a 'performance car'. The manual Toyota 86 is by no means a fast car... for example.... but it's extremely fun to drive. That feeling is the example of what is lost with 'current' day electrics.. at the moment. EDIT: If they moved towards a hybrid first (petrol electric for example) then they might approach the best of both worlds).

8:58 I don't think Chip knows that the silver strip on the roof line is suppose to represent a Katana blade. It wouldn't be much of a Katana blade if you extended it down the A pillar.
@locophoto6881
@locophoto6881 2 года назад
"katana blade" is just overhyped marketing vanity phrase adolescence ....a katana has nothing to do with the Z's history or the car, and it's always a bad choice to put a marketing phrase above strongest design...who cares if a design element resembles a cloud formation or a ginzu knife...it's either a beautiful design or it's not...Chip's design sense far eclipses what Nissan's engineers design team were allowed to do, and once again...NIssan has taken the laziest front end design choices to the market...the 400z will be likely stunning with body kits redoing the front end, if designers handle the line augmentations with class and maturity, and not the high school over-exaggerations of lines and elements like most of the 350z kits....most of those body kits are teeny bopper rice rages of blindfolded testosterone, but Chips design here is actually quite tasteful and Aston Martinesque. The fundamentals are there in the 400z...but the front, the hood, and the too compacted rear end really need a redo from doo doo to woo hoo.

Yes. Everyone's talking as if this design could actually be implemented. But in the real world there are a million constraints and you can't just use the nicest-looking design. Nissan had to work with the existing platform (well they chose to, but that's the first and biggest design constraint) so proportions were not free to choose..

I too like Chip's design better, but if Nissan had gone that route, probably wouldn't be offered in the $40k range. Sure would be nice to see Chip's version at SEMA. Or maybe Nissan could even do a special Nismo edition in collaboration with Chip. I imagine there are more than a few Z fans out there with the means to make it worth their while.

THAT is EXACTLY what it should have looked like.....too bad the beancounters don't get slapped upside the head by Nissan's design visionaries , if there's even any left there. They would sell even more of them, enough to recoup the new platform tooling costs. Instead they play it safe and work on their graphs and inputs from their NPC's, shame.

I find the Nissan design to be just ok. I like your tweaks much better Chip. Keeping with more of the old Zed styling makes me feel exited, like I do whenever I see an original 240z driving around or online. The new design just doesn't...at all.

Can i have that drawing. Hee hee ... one thing is about the Chrome Strip around (above) the door. The story I heard, is that it is to resemble a Japanese Sword (Katanna) ... so to me, that little design (art ... history?!) Would have to stay as is. Otherwise I love the design.

Chip's redesign is what the new Z should have been. I would have bought one. I currently drive a 370Z and my last car was a 350Z. I wanted to buy the next gen Z, but it's a major disappointment. The new Z front headlights shape does not match the flow of the body design as Chip mentioned. The front grill is an ugly looking box because Nissan "needed" more air to add a twin turbo, and which reduced the size of the engine. That's not the only way to cool the engine. Z are mod cars, and I don't like that the forced injection was already chosen for me. Nissan should have followed their last two gens and made the larger liter size NA engine. Otherwise, it's just copying a Supra, and not too distinguished to be on its own. Nissan didn't do enough that I would trade in my 370Z for. There are also many carryover issues from the 350Z/370Z that are on this new Z. It's not like fans weren't commenting on these issues since the prototype came out. Nissan just made a bare minimum effort to make the next gen. I'll just mod my 370Z.

Yeah the new 400 design is a huge fail in my opinion As a huge fan of the original the new one seems so confused The headlights are wrong,the rear looks from a totally different car Only the side profile is close

I doubt Nissan even did the 240Z. It's well known most of their cars from that era were designed by Italian firms, some published some entirely behind the scenes.

I have a 2007 Nissan 350z (Z33) with the VQ35HR. In 2007 and 2008, Autech hand plucked chassis from the assembly line, brought them to their facility, seam welded the chassis and built them up as homologated street legal race cars. They wore the Nismo branding but Nismo did not actually touch the car, Autech did. Nismo did the 370z (Z34), which is why it wasn't as brutal as the 350z Nismo (of which only came in 2007 and 2008, unchanged from 07 to 08). It is no surprise to find out that the new Z, which should be a 400z (Z35), because it'll have the VR30DETT engine from the Q50/60, a TT 3.0L V6 bolted to the 370z 6MT. It was unofficially named the 400z because it is expected to have the Red Sport 400 tune, which is the same engine with more boost. What would be great is if they used the VR38DETT from the GT-R in the Nismo Z. The tuner next to mine gets about 540 whp from the VR30. Now that is interesting and probably where the cars should be, but they save money on the turbos to keep cost down a bit. I want a new Z, but after seeing this, I want this, not the new Z. I also wanna see what the Nismo specs are.

He was VERY valid points about the Z. Here’s why it’s going to be cheaper than the Supra. - Carry over chassis from the 370, which also compromises the proportions per Chip’s criticisms. -Carry over drivetrain that is already 5ish years old with almost 20 year old manual and a 10 year old auto. The car is good looking and I’m glad it’s coming back, the Z owes its existence because of the relaunch of the Supra (hate it all you want, also the hate is ridiculous), Nissan wouldn’t of considered bringing back the Z if it weren’t for the Supra. Same goes for the Rumored S16 because the GR86/BRZ exists. Should have Nissan develop a new chassis for the Z? Yes, do I think the Z34 chassis compromises the car on more than just looks? Definitely, am I still excited for the car? Yes.
