Pink foam is the best building material. So versatile! And a lovely inspiring color.

Using drywall putty for road material is actually a really neat idea. I was using a foam product from woodland scenics and it's quite expensive. You can find this at any hardware store.

This is going to be a journey to remember, I bet!

As one of the Limeys who built with Lawrie, all I can say is great job! Everything is so much better with a bunch of mates, I took so long to build my module as I didn't have anyone with me to help with motivation

There’s an N-scale group that comes to my local annual model train show that has a really large and impressive modular layout. It does have its huge rail terminal modules, but it has loads of long track segments winding through rural scenery. Most of the layout features scenery and/or minor landmarks of different parts of the state, and they add little explanation signs along the length of the layout about what you’re seeing on the modules. It’s slowly become my favorite layout in the show. I lost it at YOU HAVE DISTURBED THE DIRT! Lots of good references here!

I have a contained of that DryDex putty stuff that I use for all the drywall work I do on my apartment, but it's so big I'll probably never actually use it all.... but now I at least have another use for it so I can at least get a little closer to using it all

I saw a module in Springfield this year that had absolutely gorgeous electric lines. I was rather blown away by it, because they made the thing so much more real, and it occurred to me that not a lot of layouts put in electric lines. I chatted with my Dad about it, and he said yeah, not a lot of people put in lines because it's a real F$%ing pain the ass. The stretchy wire stuff you need to do use it apparently hard to deal with, you have to get the tension just right to make it sag the right amount, and it can be fragile especially when transporting the module. Anyway, maybe this is all old news to you guys, but either way good luck! If you can get those lines in there, I'm sure it will look amazing!

This was a fantastic way to start the day, a perfect mix of doofy friends getting up to their nonsense, genuinely useful advice (doubly appreciated by someone on the cusp of building his first layout in years), and general relaxing layout building ASMR. Whether it's Hyce or Leighton, I beg y'all to continue this series, as completely as possible. I'd love to be able to learn how to do this from start to finish from you.

I've developed a funny love for those windmills. We don't really have them in the Northeast, so I only had ever seen them in cartoons and other depictions of farms and ranches out west. Then when me & my girlfriend went on a big roadtrip out to Colorado, suddenly I'm seeing them all over the great plains and it's like "oh wow, yeah those are real things." I had never actually known what they are even for, never thought about it all, and had to ask a local somewhere we stopped a long about it. It was kind of the same feeling we got when, the moment we crossed from Kansas into Colorado driving toward Denver, a tumbleweed blew right over the road just in front of us, as if to say "welcome to out west, yeehaa!" As we were a road-trippin', we developed a funny game with those windmills. Y'see, my girlfriend had never had the experience of going on a road trip growing up, so I had to teach her how to do these things. When I and my brother's were young, my baby brother would call water towers "plumps," and we somehow started a game of competing on spotting the plumps saying "plump, I call it!" Actually, I can't remember if we called them "plumps" or "blumps," or both. Anyway, silly childhood memory of passing the time in the car, lol. So I taught my girlfriend the "plump I call it" game, and she became quite good at it. Then, we developed "Plump I Call it: Kansas Edition," which was about, you guessed it, spotting windmills. Except we needed a silly baby name for the windmills. The perfect name just came out of me. I called them "pru-pru-prus." When you spotted a windmill, you had to say "pru-pru-pru, I call it." Now, to really appreciate this name, you can't say it like an English word though. I'm Russian, I speak Japanese too, so I said it with more like a rolled R, not the growly English r. In other words, you gotta say it like it's Spanish or something, then you'll get it. It's just a silly road trip shenanigan, like me reading everything at museums like an ol' prospector named Zabulon Zabeezakiel Smith. I guess you just had to be there, lol.

22:00 and here we see why you should always use only white glue on unplastered foam. All solvent based products eat through the foam. A hairdryer set on low heat can be used to CAREFULLY dry the white glue, as high heat has the same effect on the foam as solvent based products.

Well my fathre and I are building a modell railroad in our well my old basement (don´t live with my parents anymore) since I am a little kid and we have not even finished the cabeling yet but there was always a functioning railway hanging above it: The now over 35 years old garden railway. It is basically a big doubletracked loop which has two extra small loops onnecting on the side of the tracks so you can switch the side, direction and you can take it all appart into smaller sections for easier storage. Well it doesen´t exist anymore (The loops still do and they will probably get renovated and reused), we have ripped all the rails off the planks they where mounted on and now we are putting them on new, redesigned ones which have a slightly different layout and are better portable. So, we are in the middle of mounting the rails unto the new planks and we´ve been building now for 4 days straight, what are we dong wrong that it takes us so long?

i crave steam era knowledge. i live close to the old battle creek division of the Michigan central line within 200 yards of where the tracks used to be near Athens,mi . there was a loco named or nicknamed the holy land flyer. i cant find anything more than that about it. id love to know what kind of steam locomotive it was. all people can tell me is they were all scraped when Michigan central got bought out.

Is Dusty now the Last missing of the 3/4 crew? Building fremo Straight modules is quiet easy, I build a 90° curve module in 22 radius doubble main and I forgot how many straight main modules I build, for a 4 track station that is about 7 modules long has doubble switch over on both ends, they are 2 modules each and 5 modules of roundhous and yard and about 8 other straight or curved modules. The real challenge is Narrowgauge windy track, I have 2 modules at home which are about cealing height put long side up, I want to build the Animas high Bridge of the Silverton Branch, I'm struggling at that, it's so difficult when yer used to Fremo
