The narrow guage engine was lifted by a four-legged gantry, a standard guage wagon was wheeled underneath, and the engine lowered into it. The wheels on the engine turned the bogie wheels and this combo was used to draw in supply wagons into the brewery from Kingsbridge station, which was just across the road. Saved having to operate a separate engine for that duty. Clever. The engine was manufactured by Geoghagans in Dublin, and was small to negotiate the tunnels in the brewery. We have an almost complete example in the Cavan and Leitrim Railway museum in Dromad, Co. Leitrim. I believe there is a complete example in Cultra museum, in the 'wee north'. I may have photos on my computer.

"Never carry a large drum in public around drunk people." Oh lawd. That reminds me of this time I was marching in a Mardi Gras parade with a sousaphone, and some drunk (with surprisingly good aim and distance) threw a not-quite-empty beer can RIGHT into the bell. Got the can out easily; the smell of Bud Light, not so much.

Fun fact: the Dublin Piggyback was actually a British thing that Wilbur Awdry discussed in The Railway Series, as Skarloey had spent some time in a piggyback converter car assisting the North Western Railway in completing its main line, which contributed significantly to his early wearing out and overhaul

First rail route in Ireland was actually built to 4ft. 8.5 inch gauge (Dublin to Kingstown Railway). Then the first railway in Ulster, now Northern Ireland, was built to 5 ft. 6 inches when railways began to be built from Dublin to Belfast the gauge discrepancy meant that a British board of trade commission was convened to rule on what was to be the Irish standard gauge. Because of the rising North v South tensions they decided to split the difference and said that the mainline network throughout the island of Ireland was to be built at 5foot 3 inches.
@Hyce777
@Hyce777 Год назад
Huh, that doesn't make any sense to me but that's neat!
@kevino6618
@kevino6618 Год назад
@@Hyce777 Yeah, looking back it was beyond dumb. It basically has meant that every piece of rolling stock has had to essentially be bespoke, a case in point being the GM (EMD) locos that have become the backbone of Irish Rail operations since the 60s and even steam locos that were based on British designs. I refer to them as GM diesels as they have always been known to Irish Rail as GM products.

491 was 1026(also 1126). The boiler of the k-37 was kept after rebuild from the C-41. So, of you play the cards right, you could rebuild a K-37 to a C-41 as the boilers are from the C-41. So like from 498 to 1009 for example as the build numbers are the same.
