Guys..... just because you didn't see me put on the thermal paste doesn't mean it wasn't there.... clearly there are parts that are edited out for time reason. The paste was pre-spread and not a dot method. Why do I even have to post this? Thought we were collectively smarter than this...

Am I mistaken or did this channel always post videos at 1080p? I thought it was like 4k or is that certain videos? Did you need to lower render times and overall editing times since you have to account for heading home?

Can you blame him? I remember some motherboard OEM actually recommended you buy the highest end boards if you are going to be overclocking the 16/18 CPUs because of the power delivery. I mean, trying this on a mid-range X299 may end up with a fire or at least a fried power delivery. That said, performance is very impressive once you get it to 4.5.

I really hope that's not a chemical powder extinguisher.. Most of the powder ones are highly corrosive and hygroscopic. Using one can potentially ruin a large part of the electronics in the room (that powder gets everywhere). Use a CO2 one instead.

Depending on your operation i don't see how a couple T5HO bulbs could draw that much power from the grid compared to everything else in your house. Just switch all your light bulbs out for LED or Fluorescent to give you some leeway for the PC if that's a big concern for you. Or just buy LED grow lights for your weed, they aren't cheap but neither is prison. 😄

R7-1700 draws 250 watts just like a 6900K/7900X when R7 is OC'd to 3.9 GHz, much to the dismay of dumbass buffoons who think they draw only 65 watts at all times! :)

@amer-du6qh
@amer-du6qh 7 лет назад
mdd1963 3.9GHz is a pretty hefty overclock. Especially for Ryzen chips. You're pushing 8 cores and 16 threads to a frequency that is not guaranteed to be stable and you would need to up the voltage. Ryzen non-OC is a pretty efficient architecture. But once you up the voltage and increase the frequency, don't expect efficiency to be the same. Same for Intel chips. :)
@mdd1963
@mdd1963 7 лет назад

"jim, i discovered one example of cherry picked cpu's on accident. i went to silicon lottery and was looking at their site. i clicked on 7980xe and was looking at them. according to silicon lottery, only 4% of those cpu's were able to reach 4.5 ghz oc. 28% 4.4, 57% 4.3, 83% 4.2 ghz. what i found, is that all of these youtube reviewers, who were all hitting 4.4 to 4.5 all obviously had to have selected cpu's. because if the rarity in silicon lottery is 4% hitting 4.5, that means jays2cents, hitting 4.8 i think he got, would literally be close to probably 1% of the cpu sample ever reaching that high. meaning that he literally got a golden cpu. if the average cpu, that a person buys, only reaches lets say 4.2, that would bring the 7980xe far closer to threadripper performance and thus would show it being that much of a "greater" cpu. the average person i have run across on the internet, firmly believes those 7980xe are all capable of 4.5 and think if they buy one, they too would easily hit that. which, according to silicon lottery, is literally not the case at all. which calls into question, yet again, intel is literally conning people." a comment on AdoredTV's "ConLake Returns - Golden Sample 8700K's."
@Cheesemonk3h
@Cheesemonk3h 3 года назад
your binning statistics are wrong but it does not diminish from the point you're making. i bought a 7940x for dirt cheap and i definitely did make the mistake of thinking i would be able to get much higher clocks out of this cpu. this thing is not capable of doing 4.5ghz all core and is barely stable at 4.4ghz - its the exact opposite of a golden sample. but you can control the voltage and clock speed of each core independently, so you can turn down low quality cores if they are creating too much heat. if you determine which cores are capable of going higher, and you can get an interesting compromise between single thread performance on your good cores and a crapload of low powered cores i've been running 6 cores at 4.6ghz and 8 cores at 3.8ghz and is entirely manageable with air cooling, and cinebench only pulls about 280w. the 4.4ghz all core overclock pulled 420w on cinebench. the crazy thing is that i can push it further. but remember - its the exact same die as the 7980XE binned to have less cores. that means that any chips that made it to being a 7980XE are probably much higher quality silicon than a 7940x
@badgermemelord6207
@badgermemelord6207 Год назад
@@Cheesemonk3h My worst skylake-x bin so far was a 7820x that only does 4.8 at 1.27v or so, my 7900x does 4.9at 1.32v. I have a hard time believing some of these chips can only do 4.4-4.5, I'm more inclined to believe that theyre just not being used with a proper cooling setup and/or voltages are too low.

@amer-du6qh
@amer-du6qh 7 лет назад
Well designed and built power supplies will run at rated power just fine. They can run 50-100w over the ratings momentarily until it gets too hot or until safety circuitry kicks in. Power supplies that use dc-dc conversion or some form of modern power delivery design supported by heavy duty caps will get the job done. Also, if the fan is a double ball bearing and can extract a lot of hot air away, that's another variable to consider.
@MrEzilkannan

A well rated, properly built power supply should not have problems running at even 90% of its continuous wattage. If it can't, then its not worth all that extra money.
@supremeirohnic

Im late but this is bullshit. The watt meter measures the power the power supply draws, it outputs less because it's not 100% efficent. So a 800W PSU at a theoretical 80% efficency at 100% load will draw 1000 watts. (1000 * 0,8 = 800)

I think everyone is thinking that AMD's architecture is on par with intels. Its not just about cores, its about how those cores are joined together and their micro-functionality. Sure in realtime AMD matches intel, but with various instabilities that still require testing and optimisation, probably in another improved release. Intel builds on years of IPC improvements and the chip works straight out of the box. Compare a Honda Civic Type R (167miles per hour) with a dodge challenger STR or Porsche panamera. They are both the same speed but they are built in different categories. A Honda 1.5L Turbo is NOT a V6 or V8. AMD is 2X 1800 Ryzens. Intel is ONE processor. Combine two intel 7960X's to make a thrteadripper. Yes astronomical price but astronomical performance.

When your spending 12 times what the next guy is spending your gonna have an edge technologically. The fact their edge isn't exactly a gape currently speaks volumes... I wonder what AMD could achieve with a budget 12 times larger than they have now
@Kankipappa
@Kankipappa 7 лет назад
I think it really is about the clockspeed though, IPC is on point per mhz. You know the RTS game called Ashes of singularity? All I see ryzen scores being under 40fps on the official benchmarks in websites, but I also saw one 1700X at 4GHz and good memory report ~55fps on the CPU test, while OC'd 8-core intels have been howering usually in 45fps range in the test. So there already is potential on them when properly tweaked (with expensive memory duh) for the average consumer and I guess it will get better on ryzen refresh at early 2018, if they can bump the clockspeeds up a bit. I guess the plus side is, they consume way less power than the new intel offerings...

Liquid metal doesn't hold up when it comes to longevity. Power cycles will make it move, slip away from the die, and it will need to be reapplied at some point. Solder isn't an option on smaller, lower-end chips since the heat difference makes the chip expand and shrink back, leading to possible cracks due to their small size. Thermal paste does the job while being durable and not needing reapplication. I don't know about the die size on X299 chips to make a comment about them.
@Folsomdsf2
@Folsomdsf2 7 лет назад
There's no point to soldering these. If you are going to delid because you want more cooling, you're going to remove the heat spreader completely. You're going to go bare die. If they soldered the thing on it'd be much worse for the consumer who actually knows what they're doing.
@ujiltromm7358
@ujiltromm7358 7 лет назад
David Folsom // You MUST relid, especially mainstream chips. The substrate is too thin, the IHS provides physical rigidity to avoid the substrate cracking. Bare die cooling requires the user to know what they are doing down to a science. You don't just go and apply a cooler on a bare die.

Maybe you could have gone further with a stronger power supply. At 750W, you're getting close to design limits of an 800W supply, maybe voltage was drooping, or delivery becoming noisy or unstable. Just a thought.
@SilentGuyX
@SilentGuyX 5 лет назад
A power supply is not 100% efficent so a 800W PSU at 100% load with a theoretical efficency will draw 1000W to output 800W to the system. That was not the fault.

@SaturnusDK 7 лет назад
Since he's talking about increase in heat we can really only call it by its rightful name, quadratic, since P=V^2/R. We must assume the load is fairly constant, so it's really the voltage squared that dictates the power consumed. There will be an increased resistance due to increased temperature but it can largely be ignored in this regard.

@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 7 лет назад
+mdd1963 That's not nearly cold enough to get 5.5 Ghz. I doubt you could do that with DICE cooling. I have a cooler I can run -35c loaded temps, but not 800+w on. Even still, the limit is not the temps, its the insane voltage and degredation you will hit if its even remotely close to room temp. If its cooled with LN2, the chip gets way less degredation, and that's why its ok to push things like Ryzen up to 2.0v (that is max voltage for people reading this, you should calmly put the LN2 pot down and walk away if you don't know what you're doing).
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 7 лет назад
Realistically, with a super lucky chip, and the obvious delid, Jay might be able to get 5.1 Ghz max if he is in such a cold sub-zero climate. The chip may degrade in under a year, but who cares, Threadripper with 32c/64t will be out most likely. Don't forget sub-zero motherboard prep if you keep the computer inside with the radiator outside, otherwise it will only be awesome for about 30 minutes until water condenses and you have a $2500+ paper weight (CPU + mobo).

Although the cables are probably 18AWG 10A rated (720W total 8+4), and even though you can go past that with no problem provided that your room temp isn't like 45C or something crazy, it's why they get warm.

Hey, Jay. I wanted you to know that your power supplies are rated as "peak power" and not average or RMS. So, if you're hitting max on the PSU you're more than likely going to destroy your PSU and your motherboard with your components. When you get power supplies from a manufacturer, ask for the individual average and RMS values per rail (voltage and current per output), the information you get from them may very well surprise you.
