Really like the one ssid approach. Won't ever entrain the idea of buying anything without a local controller. Guess I will also wait a few years and make sure they are actually around for a while. I take my infrastructure very seriously.

The option for a locally hosted controller and a commitment from the manufacturer to support, update and maintain the product for at least 5 years is a major point when investing in new access points. I'm a bit disappointed at TP-link that has dropped support for older, but still well functioning access points for their new controller versions. Why create E-waste of well functioning products?...

"Always On" setting is useful IF your WAN connection fails, the AP shuts off, and that forces all Cellphones to use Cell service (automatic "failover" does not always work)

It would be an excellent opportunity when Alta focusses on the "nerds" of the networking world besides the "normal" home user. And this with a flick of a button to "advanced". Unfortuneatly, Unifi does this, but to a certain level. I would like to see this in Alta like an example you mentioned @ 6:03 We'll see. Can't wait to see their products in the EU.

We run a few hundred Unifi APs and many unifi switches on many sites (no unifi firewalls though, don't like them) - one single self hosted docker controller is the big selling point for me. Good to see emerging options as ubiquiti is a bit quick to EOL stuff and a little unstable at times lately with AP reboots needed more and more but I do love the unifi ecosystem. Thanks Tom

I'm well and truly over the Ubiquiti supply issues (I even resorted to installing a TP-Link P-P radio for a customer) and welcome a new player to the scene. I also go to extreme lengths to avoid anything cloud-based and would not consider purchasing these until a local control option is introduced. Let's see how this develops...

I'd really enjoy experimenting with them and a local controller. For larger multi-floor homes, several APs that can seamlessly hand off is really important. Unifi has been fine, yet the UI has always made it interesting/hard to determine which device is doing what. The cost of APs and running direct ethernet to each, is really insignificant if you can then avoid many other ethernet drops and actually have everyone happy with all their devices. I think it's great to have more competition in this space, and I think there's a lot of opportunity getting above the mesh AP crap in into real useful multi-AP w/ a local controller. Multi-vlan capability and a guest network / hotspot would be great to see demonstrated (looked like was present, but not expounded on in this vid). Details. 3k sq ft, 3 floors, detached garage + pool area, presently using 4 Unifi APs, 5 vlans (trusted clients, guest, IoT, mgmt, test), and I'd buy it all again in a heartbeat for the ease of use it affords everyone, every device, all our guests, etc.

Aerohive introduced a ppsk key feature before they were acquired by extreme networks. They still have it and we leveraged it heavily, but ultimately, their reliance on a cloud licensing caused us to drop them for ubiquity. I won’t look at anything from Alta unless they offer a local only option. I hope they do. I’ll immediately give them a shot once that happens. I like the device level insights. I wish more vendors did that.

I am so ready for a viable alternative to unifi - docker hosted controller would be great. Given the choice, I'd self host for sure! We've been testing this and due to the great cloud controller are recommending them already on smaller installations where just 1 or 2 APs are needed.

how does the speed limiting work? does it set the total speed to be shared on multiple connections with the same pw? or is it a per connected device speed setting the way unifi does it? Id really love to be able to set a bandwidth cap that cant be exceeded and would therefore be shared among multiple devices .

As far as I know, the single-SSID multiple-password feature (without a MAC-based lookup step) is incompatible with WPA3, so I wonder how long this will last in the market. In WPA2 you can essentially brute-force try all of the known passwords during client auth.

It's called PPSK it's the prosumer version of what Cisco ISE can do. TP Link also offers PPSK. I would assume Ubiquiti will release PPSK very soon since it's becoming very popular

Interesting product. Like others, I like the single SSID/multiple password function. I have an fairly robust home network that I am looking to upgrade. I want multi-gig (10gig) switches with POE that handle full link aggregation. Like others, I am 100% out on any cloud driven solution. Fast roaming is also a key feature. Being able to bounce between APs during a video or VoIP call is also significant. I know this video is 4+ months old, so I am hoping to see advances in self hosted space soon. Gig only switches are going to be outdated soon.

Im interested - as a very long term Ubiquiti user, I, like I am sure many others are, are really sick of their interfaces getting more and more problematic, and the quality control that seems to be a thing of the past. I'd like a similarly costed and featured alternative to be in the market, if for nothing else, than to get Ubiquiti to start trying harder.

The one SSID feature is also on Ruckus systems. I know because I live in a community that uses it. I can go anywhere on the large grounds and as long as I'm on the community's wifi I can access the other devices on my assigned VLAN. Needless to say I don't use this and have all my devices behind my own router/firewall because I don't want the community's IT support to be able to log and/or monitor my internal traffic.

The offline with the internet thing bugs a lot of users if they are are on a phone that has LTE and WiFi and the home wifi goes down for any reason "the internet is down" however if the WiFi disconnects at the same time they are interrupted less and the "WiFi" is down. Power users with lots of home services will want what you want but I can see it being a better default for someone that just buys a bunch of these and adds it to their ISP connection.

Lots of comments about local control. As a network engineer by trade I would disagree. Having managed Cisco, Aruba, and other controller based systems vs the new generation of cloud managed WiFi from Mist, Meraki, and others I would say this is the way to go. I think they could adopt a similar subscription based model for business users and offer support, and commit to providing free cloud management for home users I think that would be a winning combo and something I would certainly consider deploying at one of my sites if they prove to be stable and reliable.

One gigabit uplink and poor radiator placement need to be addressed as well: 1. With the current speeds and capacities of the APs they need to have at least 2.5G NICs, better - straight to 10G. 2. The heatsink that goes between the mounting surface and the AP - how is it supposed to dissipate the heat? That space is isolated, so it basically boils the bottom.
