Great video, thank you so much for that overview. I'm a VL3X user and thinking about a change as well. I really like the step function of the VL to have a certain song well prepared. Is there something similar for RC600?
Ive not been able to save loops very easily on the voice live 3? so if you lay down a guitar track how do you save it and then go to a new song and do the same so say you can have a 40 song set for an evening
@@stanstazenski1749 Hey, In case you never worked this out. You have to go into utility, labelled I UTIL I, This option is hidden while the loops are playing.
Hey, I'm late to this party, but I've been using Boss loopers since the RC-50. I've got a 600 and here's my answer to that question. At their core, they are two different boards with two different applications. The Boss pedal is about looping at it's core. The RC-50 was primarily a three track looper. The RC-300 still had looping at it's core, but added some FX and supportive features of the looping. As both model lines progressed, it feels like both companies just threw things in they developed working on other product lines. I see all the vocal and guitar fx as backups in case my main rig fails. If I can't control harmonies with my guitar, it's a non starter. I use a Digitech VL3 for harmonies. The Helicon line initially seemed like an answer to DigiTech's vocal FX for singers. At first, it's harmony was clunky. But they improved and branched into guitar stuff. I bet their vocal presets are better. If a pedal lists a looper as a secondary features (it also has a looper), that looper is gonna suck. A good looper pedal is sophisticated and you can't just cram all that functionality into a secondary features. If you do, it's not a secondary feature any more. The lack of easy harmony control means a singer/guitarist probably wouldn't replace the Voicelive 3 Extreme. But if they get that fixed, it's gonna be a dogfight. Thanks for the indepth video!
The two devices have completely different intentions. If you are a singer, the voicelive 3X is still the best choice on the market. This is because the vocal effects are beauty and: They will scale automatically. On the other Hand: If you are more a guitarist and Looper Artist: The voicelive is not really usable. Yes: There is a looper in there, but it only fits a few situations and is completely useless in other. So: It depends on what you are, what your intentions are… In my case, i sold the boss and bought the tc. I need a small setup for live solo gigs and I need two track looping, only. More I need simple to use effects, because The more complex - The more can go wrong on stage and if this happens once: I am not a professional - I need time to deal with epic fails and this is a no-go on stage. So: Having everything I need in one device which is easy to use is essential for me. The Boss do not fit this requirement *for me*. If there are artist using backing tracks and effect automation: Nothing beats the voicelive3 Extreme. If you want a perfect looper: Nothing beats the Boss-stuff. But -> Only my opinion! I am an amateur - Something completely different is the possibility in big professional environments, where size and complexity do not matter, because there are people dealing with it for you.
I don't understand - is it possible to use 4 vocal effects and 4 guitar effects at the same time on the Boss RC 600. That is, is it possible to play simultaneously with 4 effects on the vocal channel and 4 effects on the guitar channel?
I have been using VL3 for 1 year and i really love it. Now I sell my VC3 and I’m using RC600 4 month already and I Love it 🥹 both are amazing. But for more complex loops rc600 it’s much more easy. VL3 for guitar and voice effect are amazing
I’m genuinely torn between pedals. I love the line 6 DL4 and have used it for years to loop pedals and voice but only thing is harmonising. Would you recommend rc or vl?
If RC-600 had tracking harmonies then it would be my one and only 😄 But since it doesn't, I'm using separate harmony pedal with Quad Cortex, and also looking to buy maybe Aeros Loop Studio as my looper. I used Voicelive 3 Extreme for few years and it's a nice device! Sold it for few reasons, but it really is a nice do-it-all device.
@@ukura It is a good device. Some say they break easily but mine never did. I sold because: - Quite large size and yet footswitches are not customizable enough for my taste to make most of it. Quite a bit of tap dancing to move between vocal effects, guitar effects and looper. - Vocal eq is a bit poor if you use the manual one instead of the automatic shaping thing - Doesn't have good tone shaing for acoustic guitar imo, like you can't use IR:s or something because it's an old device before IR::s were a thing. - Electric guitar stuff on it is a joke and waste of space - They will never update the device again, last update was somewhere before covid lol And for all this it is too pricey considering it''s behind the progress of new effects devices. But the thing is, there are not that many options out there for vocalists. So this thing is still good in that sense. Vocal effects are good.
also helpful to hear that you've been using a helix with the VL3X...jeez the amp sim on the voicelive is SO bad...but also the RC600 4 effect limitation is so rough...!
I’ve used the VL3 since it was introduced and added the rc 600 after it came out. It took nearly a year to get the RC600 repaired. I control the mix using the VL3 to condense several sound sources (including drums) into one mono out and use the RC 600 to loop at the final stage.
The Loop function of the TC has been more like an addon. Guitar amps , even if they are old, are more powerfull than your video describes. Of course you do have to dive a bit deeper into manual. Both devices are really nice ones. - You can combine them. Thank you very much for your presentation! 🙏🏽🍀🙃
I would like to hear a demo of the VL3 as the vocal processor and the Boss as the guitar processor and looper for vocal and guitar/instruments looper together! To clarify I wish to hear the two units together, boss +vl3 before you sell the vl3. The best of both worlds. I have too much time invested in the vl3 but I hate the looper and thought about adding the boss in conjunction with the vl3. Love your channel thanks for posting this great video! Peace, Sharky Mark Music
sorry for the late reply! I unfortunately sold the VL3. But I'm sure that would work well. The VL3 is definitely more powerful as a vocal processor. But just wasn;t what I personally needed. The RC600 is a way more powerful looper
The TC is also a guitar fx processor and if rob chapman likes it then so do I! It’s so customisable that surely you can get almost any sound you want out of it?? It is however really nice to hear a comparison between the two and I’ve got to admit that I agree with this dude about the amp sims
Great review man i use the boss ve 500 and did previously use the VLE 3 but i do mainly singing and hardly use my guitar at all I think the VLE£ is too bulky and this boss like mine is far easyier to rack n inputs are a thing I aint happy with the harmonies on any of them really but the doubler is good on the boss...I think Im sticking where I am therefore as its portable and can use backing music for harmonies not just a guitar so yeah .... the one thing i liked with the helicon was how it lit up y know if its on the floor its easy to see ...and the effects were ok but half of them useless. I think both companies need to simplyfy things more ...getting your head around programming is a pain ...I am too old to learn just wanna plug in play presets n go man ...too much crap on both .
Excellent info and great direct conversation..wish you were my neighbor. I also have both devices and have not been able to make them play nice together..Simpler set up is needed. Great vid mate. I’ve recently bought the 600 and will be selling my V3X. Love the effects of the VL for my acoustic gigs but I want to get more into looping and I found switching screens from looper and back a pain
Definitely dude! It’s a huge step up for looping. It’s actually crazy to me how much less gear I have than I did in 2017. This thing takes 3 things off my board
Feel free to show us thru a song creation using the RC-600 with voice & guitar from the Helix... Maybe show how you add drums, How you setup from the Helix etc. For Dummies. I'v been using a 2016 stereo JamMan with Helix floor with guitar for practice & instrumentals...
I have a RC-500 and I'm wandering if the problem I have with it remains in RC-600. When all tracks are in Play Mode SINGLE and Loop Sync ON so I can play in sync with the internal rhythm all tracks must have the same number of measures. Otherwise when the a shorter track ends and next is a longer one the loop doesn't start from the begining. It's a problem for me because in general song verse/chorus/bridge don't have same size. Can you please check this?
I believe Loop Sync you just have to turn Loop Sync off!! Loop Sync makes all the loops in sync with eachother, doesnt have to do with the rhythm track. Give that a try in your RC500
@@ShakeoutNYthanks for your answer. Yes, I've done that. When I set Loop Sync OFF the tracks are no longer in sync with the internal rhythm and even if I am very accurate stopping the recording in time, it works for first played loop but if I let the loop play more than 5 times it starts to drift out of time related to rhythm. Of course if it plays just one time I dont feel the drift. There should be a way to sync tracks to the beat or measure instead of between traks. For example using TEMPO SYNC parameter that allready exists but not for this purpose. For my use this is relevant and I was hopping the RC-600 didn't suffer from this. Can you give it a try to see if it doesn't drift from the internal rhythm or external midi clock (from beatbuddy or whatever...). Thanks again.
@jGuitarLoop did you ever find a solution with this? Just bought RC 500 and the drift makes it totally unusable in this scenario with the drum machine. If you have any tips greatly appreciated - many forums picking up on the same thing. Best wishes & thanks in advance
@@jimkroft bad news. I can only use RC 500 with Loop Sync Off because generally my songs have chorus and verse with diferent number of mesures. The rhythm section of RC 500 doesn´t exist for me because I can´t play in sync with it. The drift will kill the performance. The worse is that BOSS support told me directly that this is the way it should work. They are happy with this.
Could you please advise if it's possible to run multitracks from boss rc 600? For example, I'm a solo artist singing and playing acoustic guitar and I want to run stereo track with prerecorded drums and synths and at the same time want to run click-track for monitoring purposes. So i need to run 2 tracks synchronously and route them to different outputs. Thank you.
@@ShakeoutNYhelped a lot and I'm making the switch for sure! dude the guitar amps alone compared to the VL3 which I've used the last 2 years is way better! My rc 600 came in a few days ago and I can't wait to make the switch as well.
Awesome video that answered all my questions that I was having a hard time finding. Originally I was using the Boss - VE-2 with the GT-100. I switched over to the VL3X cause it was all in one. I'm not a looper but I do the backing track thing with me on vocals and guitar along with my bass player to sound like a full band. I like the VL3X but I'm scared that it will break down at any time. It doesn't have a great reputation. I've always been a Boss fan and have missed it so with this vid, I finally made up my mind, I'm going back by buying the RC 600. I'm thinking both me and the bass player can plug right into it with instruments and vocals and a line to our amps. For me that will be 2 Boss Katana amps for stereo. I'm not worried about the guitar sound being not good enough in the 600 cause I made the sound in the VL3X work so I'll make the 600 guitar sound work as well. It sounds close to the GT-100 anyway so I'm sold. thanks again.
On the RC600, to hear effects on your dry signal you need to apply the effect to the input and thus the effect gets recorded to the loop. Do reverb and delay tails get truncated when you close the loop?
@@ShakeoutNY thanks! I assume if you have the effects on the recorded loop you can’t hear them on the dry signal you can’t hear the effects while recording until after you close the loop?
Great video👍 What about the limitation with midi-input-only for the auto-scale for vocal harmonies on RC-600? Don`t you use that feature on your TC-Helicon?😊 Do you plan to manually configure scale for each song?
I do use that feature! But yeah, I plan to just program the scales for each song. Though I will say that so far the auto has been pretty decent on its own. Messed around with it the othwr day at a rehearsal and I was surprised
Very helpful! Question: Can you set up one of the pedals to switch from taking vocals to not loop while switching to allowing the vocals too loop? This would be massively helpful to know!
I’d rather have them both, what I mean is, a dedicated looper and a dedicated vocal effects. But if you’re thinking of saving space or go lighter with your rigs then just pick one. 😅
Nice comparison video! I was wondering, can the looper audio on the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme be routed to a separate output than the vocals (and vocal effects)? If so, the looper and vocals could go to a separate channel on a mixer for better control of the live sound.
The Voicelive looper just never cut it for me, being tethered to a Metronome is just never did it for me. The new boss tempo sense feature is Killer. The tempo follows you.
Hi. Thanks for the vid. I’m upgrading to the 600 from the mk1 505 and selling a bunch of smaller vocal and guitar fx pedals which will now be redundant. A big reason for the upgrade is the improved sound quality from the pre amps. Wondering if you have any generic advice on the 600 fx for a more natural vocal sound. Ie just using compression, dynamics and reverb to get a nice sound, rather than something very fx sounding. Any tips? I sing jazz, soul, funk mostly
Hey! So the RC600 doesnt have vocal and guitar effects, it just has a general effects section (as of now). But I've used the reverb and compression on my vocals and they sound solid. Just take a little tweaking
Are you able to set up the RC 600 to work like the Voicelive extreme three? I’ve gotten used to the Voicelive three with the ABC functions and I’m wondering if I can mimic that on the RC 600? Thanks!
Awesome video and nice covers man . I didn't know about this unit. I currently am seeking a consistent solution for live looping my guitar parts and would love your advice. I play some guitar parts that are repetitive but very difficult to sing over. Think rage against the machine and other syncopated repeated licks that are hard(er) to sing over and keep consistent. Live I would like either... a looper that will follow a click track and allow for midi automation with Stagetraxx 3 so I don't have to touch the looper to engage loop creation and playback/stopping. Or...something that will follow the drummer. I have thought about using: Using stagetraxx 3 to send time-stamped midi to a rc-5 loopstation. Alternately I have A Tc jam x2 and was thinking I'd aux out the click to it so it stays in the same tempo as the click the drummer is following. Finally I've heard that Ableton live has a tempo follow feature where I could mic my drummer's snare and have all the backing tracks follow the drummers tempo as well as automate the loop start playback and stop points. Which do you think in your experience would be most consistent to implement in a live setting where I need complex guitar parts to repeat while I sing over them? Thanks for your advice.
Hi 👋 I can't seem to find a way to turn off the click/tap tempo/rhythm. On the rc300 it was on the outside next to the tap. I can't seem to find it anywhere which is really odd. Surely ppl like to free loop without a click or tapping in a tempo? Please help
Does the Harmonizer on the Rc600 track off the guitar input? I love my Digitech Vocalist….very limited but follows when you change from a major to minor chord…or minor 7th…. But you have sold me in the RC600….guess I’ll sell my RC300….thank you!
Thanks for a great review. I've been using the VL3E for several years, and just ordered the Boss 505mk2; it'll be interesting to compare them. Enjoyed your music, too!
hope you like the new looper! good luck with it. they're a little bit of a learning curve, but to be expected I suppose. and thanks! I appreciate you checking it out.
@@ShakeoutNY I enjoyed it. The VL3E also has the automated switching functions (no, I never used it at that level) that Boss doesn't provide. The VL3E is a great pedal and I'm also enjoyed the Boss 505Mk2! Thanks again. Keep playing and sharing!
Awesome presentation. My VL3 generates pretty good harmonies using the guitar or room sense signals to refine the quality of harmonies. WIll the the RC 600 use the guitar input as a guide to producing quality harmonies or do you manually have to set the key you are playing in ?
apparently from what I understand the harmonies are mainly controlled via Midi for the RC600, however they have sounded pretty accurate to me. The only downside is that if you want to stack harmonies like the VL3, you have to use two effect blocks and pick the harmonies that you want in each block. There's no setting to stack multiple harmonies in one block
Would like to know what you think after you have been using the Boss Rc-600 for awhile? I'm giving up on my Rc-600 after it keeps cutting out in live shows. (Software updates don't fix that problem unfortunately)
Great video. Keep up the nice and informative work. However, in the future, please make sure your guitar is in tune. I don't mean any disrespect by that, it's just a tip for constructive feedback. Otherwise, I really enjoyed your video.
For years, I've been using the VoiceLive 2 for VOCAL PROCESSING & EFFECTS. I use a Digitech JamMan for my guitar loops. If the main thing I want is really quality and versatile vocal effects & processing, and that's not quite as important as the Loop Function... is the RC 600 still a better option over the VoiceLive 3 Extreme? 'Cause I'm wondering if it will also make it that I won't need the 2nd pedal to do loops on. Another thing I loved about the JamMan is that I had 99 different loops stored on it that I created... can I store a bunch of stuff on the RC 600? Thanks for your videos... this one in particular was very helpful ;) Cheers
you can definitely store loops on both the Voicelive and RC600. But honestly if you're more interested in the vocal effects, I'd probably go with the Voicelive! The looper is still very good, but there are more options as far as vocal effects goes.
Sounds like none of the vocal effects on the RC600 are good. Some degrade your voice ("radio") and some are just crappy, eg the harmonies. So now my dilemma is if I have to buy a Helicon product to get good vocal effects, do also need the Boss 300 or 600?
@@blueeyedsoulman sold everything. This has replaced it for me. However, I will say if you need a ton of vocal effects, the VL3 is more powerful for that. I just don't need a lot of effects on my voice.
Nice video! Does the boss rc 600 have overall preset possibilities? Where you could store a whole setup with effects, button mapping, backing track settings etc? :) Thx in advance
I've been looking around and don't seem to see it anywhere but I was just wondering if the RC 600 has a guitar tuner or vocal pitch correction. It's no big deal if it doesn't cause I have a Boss TU3 already and I have never used pitch correction anyway but I'm surprised that no one has asked on the net somewhere sooner or at least no where that I have found. I packed up my VL3X tonight and it will be up for sale probably within the week. Loved using it and it's a great unit but I just can't play gigs wondering if this will be the night it decides to crap out . I know how to fix it but that's a wee bit inconvenient at a gig. Looking forward to the RC 600. Was also wondering if you still find it very reliable :) Everything I've seen negative in reliability for the RC 600, seems to be something that can be fixed in an update and probably already has been :)
appreciate your content. I'm struggling with this and can't find away around it unfortunately. I'm in mode 1. I want bank 1 to be receiving my drums from an external source. I want to be able to play that at a short loop say of 4 beats. I want that to be the bpm of the track so I set that first and it saves me looping drums for say 4 x 4 beats. I then want to go in to bank 2 and set a loop length say of 12 bars. now this is where it gets tricky and can't figure it out. say I've recorded guitar rhythm in bank two and now want to add other parts like harmonies or bass parts on the guitar. I want to add that to bank 3. for some reason they won't quantize together and the loop seems off. I know there's a global quantize but is there a way to set it so that when I set drums for 4 bars that banks two and three can be played longer but be quantized together? you can do this on the rc300 just by putting bank 1 in free mode and other two banks in auto mode. I bought this pedals for sound quality improvements, more inputs and outputs but it doesn't seem to do the one thing I want it to. I'll have to take it back otherwise.
Hey duude hope you’re well, just wondering if it’s still worth using a mixer with the RC-600 for levelling so go instrument out and go into a Yamaha mg10xu and then amplify the sound with a Roland Cube EX using it as the speaker. Also if I’m using a bass and an electric guitar can you use multiple amp simulators at the same time, say if you want to use a bass amp for the bass in input 1 and guitar amp for guitar in input 2.
It has a mixer built in! No need for one. All levels are totally controllable. And yes you can use multiple amp sims at the same time, however I'm not totally sure about the bass sims in general because I havent actually tried a bass with it yet. Hope that helps!
Actually I do usually make sure so that I can route the drums, or the rhythms to a separate channel so that I can adjust them during the live performance
@@ShakeoutNY thank you ! I am guitarist in à funk/rock band ; I need to send metronome to each member, use a harmonizer for vocals and add loops synchro to the click. The RC600 seems to be the one to try !
when you're storing it at home? depends! it will always be safer in a case, but if the room you're storing it in has a mild temperature (not too hot or cold) and is generally dry, it wont hurt to keep it out
Just got my Boss RC600 today ,,, have to say im not totally sold. Thr RC10R is far easier to use. The pedal effects as in amps, are garbage, and sound garbage. Lets face it . boss are not going to give effects and amps like the GT1000. One massive positive thing though. When i used a pc (amplitube 4) going in to the old RC, There was a lot of pc noise ect, This thing eliminates everything you plug into it, Its as quiet as a mouse. That alone was a massive plus.
Needs more markers please! I really only want to hear what you can actually use in vocal far from ultra distorted stuff music The ugly stuff I've all heard a hundred times...
I am advising anyone who reads this to avoid this Looper Pedal. It is not gig ready. I own this Looper and I hate it. Before anyone else wastes their money on this POS, I would read reviews on seller sites like Guitar Center or musicians friend. This looper does some cool stuff, but it also crashes often and sometimes randomly changes tempo mid songs. If you play in front of an audience it will embarrass you and make you look like your not professional. I have wasted so much time and money trying to make this POS work correctly. I wish I never sold my old looper (RC-300). It had less lights and buzzers, but it worked and was dependable. THE RC-600 IS NOT GIG READY. I am starting to think that there just isn't enough processing power in this device and no firmware update is gonna fix what never worked. I feel cheated out of my money. I designed my entire show around this pedal being able to slave to a midi clock. The RC-300 wasn't able to do this. Well, the RC-600 can't do it either. You're rhythm tempo will adjust, but loop playback will be a warbly mess. I've contacted Boss, their suggested solutions don't work. Seriously, avoid this product like the plague. This is the Window ME of Loop Pedals.
Honestly you may have a defective unit. I have personally not dealt with any of that. I use my unit with my band as the master tempo and haven’t had any tempo changing issues. It’s been super reliable for me. And I’ve used it on multiple tours this year as well as a ton of live streams sorry you’re experiencing that, but yeah, mine has not had issues like that at all
Maybe in your case it doesn’t, but for myself and others it definitely does make sense. The VL3X is not just a vocal processer. It also has a 3 track midi syncable looper and guitar processing. As does the RC-600. I’ve completely replaced everything I did with the VLX3 with the RC-600 and there’s no other looper on the market I could do that with before in just one device
Te esforzaste por HACER SONAR MUY MAL EL VOICELIVE 3, CASI NO SE NOTO QUE LE BAJABAS EL VOLUMEN PARA HACERLO VER MAS DEBIL...TU VIDEO ES MUY DESHONESTO!!!
Using a helix and any boss effects is going to give you a super cheap tone. Which is probably all right for this guy and his punk rock. The Helix and any other amp modeling device are absolute garbage.Tone like an AM radio Boss effects are notorious for degrading sound quality and signal. The vocal harmonizer is awful. The vocal tones are awful. No thankyou .
