**Please note that this curve is variable based on many conditions. I have seen results all over the place with this car’s charging performance. I will continue to test over time. It is my belief it will get better with updates.**
In this video I analyze my latest charging session with the Chevy Equinox EV and am quite surprised by what I saw! Let's get into it!

I tried this on a Kia EV6 long range, and it charged from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes. It averaged 175 kW DC fast charging, but it's also a smaller battery.

Is it normal to have to plug and unplug the Equinox several times to get to the charge goal?
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Месяц назад
You shouldn’t have to, no. I am going to do some further testing to see what happens if you plug in at 20% state of charge and 30% to see If the issues still exist. I’m thinking they won’t exist, so might be beneficial to not discharge as much? I will make a video, I promise.

I have been hitting 158kw consistently with Electrify Canada 350kw hyper chargers with preconditioning. 2 different cities with 2 different sessions over different weeks. Temp between 76 and 78 F(24-26c) both times and starting the charge in the 20% range. Charge today was 78F with preconditioning and started at 28% on the Electrify Canada 350kw charger. I only needed to top up a bit and put 23.24kw’s into the battery and stopped it after 10 mins. Started at 157/158 and hit 159 kw’s for a second and didn’t decrease until after 35% where it started to drop to 149. I went into a bathroom at a nearby coffee shop and quickly shut it down at 51% when I got back as I just needed enough to get me home and I had way more charge than I needed.

I have yet to experience the dreaded “gm dip” when charging my Lyriq. In fact yesterday I was able to charge from 18-80% in 33 minutes at a an EVgo Delta in about 80 degree weather (and that’s a 105 kw battery). There seems to be a lot of inconsistencies not just from charge to charge, but vehicle to vehicle as well. It’s almost as if the battery cooling systems are not working properly in some people’s cars.

Its all about the amps...how much the charger can deliver without overheating(and a derate or gm dip)
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Месяц назад
First off, yes I’m aware. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen my other videos where I talk the need for a pretty lengthy 500 amp request. Second, are you suggesting it is only the charger over heating? I don’t fully disagree. I haven’t mentioned this, but I think the overheating is happening most at the inlet, which is why I can plug in to another charger and get faster speeds. Eventually, I want to charge this on a V4 supercharger to see what happens. I’m just not sure if the immersion cooling goes through the NACS charging pins on to the adapter charging pins or not.

Can you comment on the power delivered. On your battery capacity it likely can go all over the place with my Bolt EV my experience is that GM likes being overly positive on capacity.

Hmmm...so at this point the Equinox EV is a decent car if one doesn't do a lot of road tripping, or if the vast majority of your travels don't exceed the car's range so you don't need to charge up on the road. Hopefully this changes.

I have mixed emotions about this car because when I did take it in a road-trip, I had 0 issues and it wasn’t that bad… like honestly. It just really struggles on long charge sessions. I have the boomerang out already and it was my fastest car, beat the ID.4. I have our trip to Smith Mountain Lake, where the car was waiting on us every time. I didn’t think it’s bad in practice, but it definitely struggles on the test. If they can tweak it so it’s the same everytime. I could confidently recommend. I just want consistency.

I was super skeptical about the equinox for road trips, but it was way better than I expected. The car was always done charging before we were ready to leave.

@@theaverageev "It just really struggles on long charge sessions" GM should not be bringing to market designs that require long sessions. eGMP cars are done charging in the time it takes for this to see that GM dip. Sure it might be a great car for around town, but just like the Bolt, its not really viable if you are trying to travel point A to point B across any good distance. I would really like to see your boomerang test with an eGMP car. You would cut your charging stops to 5 minutes to get the same charge added, or stay the same time, and cut out multiple stops, even with the smaller battery. As the Ioniq 5 and 6 are right around the same price point, I do not see any advantage of these GM products.

the battery has very low voltage, and hits the amp limits of chargers and internal equipment easily Total Module Count 10 Module Configuration 8S 3P Pack Configuration 80S 3P Nominal Pack Voltage (3.6V) 288V Calculated Pack Capacity (total at nominal voltage) 89.0 kWh Reported Usable Capacity 85 kWh

I’m very familiar with everything about this car. Thanks for sharing. You can check out my first video where I actually log the rise in voltage. The purpose of this video is to show it charged 14 minutes faster than my worst ever charge session. Showing inconsistency. In fact I did a charge session on the exact same units and it charged 9 minutes faster than that, sustaining higher speeds deeper into the session in the same unit. When road-tripping this vehicle in decent hot weather with repeated charge sessions I witnessed no GM dip at all. There are other manufacturers that have some vehicles with low voltage (BMW iX2 comes to mind) that have figured out a decent amperage request to have consistent curve, with a consistent experience. I agree and have noted in all my videos that heat is playing an element, I think Chevy should have waited on releasing this car until they had the charging dialed in.

The battery is 89 gross 85 usable. I have tested it a few times to measure capacity and got 89, which I shouldn’t have gotten. It was very strange.

If they could make it consistent every time, I would feel good about the car.

Here is my 2 cents. Before you buy an electric car you need to think about your lifestyle. If you're driving 30-40 miles a day to work, school, dinner etc (which is what the vast majority of people do) an electric car may be for you especially if you can charge at home. If you regularly take 1000+ mile road trips, can't charge at home and you're really not into planning an electric car may not be for you.

What is GM charging for these? I thought they were priced similar to the Ioniq 5, but these performance is just BAD in comparison
