In this episode we remove the cylinder head, strip it down completely, have it skimmed, grind the valves back in, change the valve stem seals and rebuild it.

Great video. It has @M539Restorations vibes. I've just bought an ST170 to replace the Zetec in my 1966 Anglia so this will be invaluable.

Haha nice one!! Not sure what Sreten would make of old Fords but I’m certainly glued to the goings on with his BMWs. Legendary channel 🫡 Wow that’s gonna be great! Will you keep the engine standard do you think?

@@st170restoration We stripped the engine down tonight and it has some bad scoring on the last cam journal on each cam (furthest from the pulleys) so I may have to replace the head. We'll be talking to the machine shop in the next day or two to see if they can do anything. The Zetec ran Jenveys so I'll probably use those again. I'll need to get an ecu that can handle the VVT though.

Good choice on letting the machine shop do the valves and vac test them! Watched a video on honing science and done properly it's really not a DIY thing; if I'm correct Bosch had put out the video. Very exacting to get the proper out come. Also check out The Motor Oil Geek on YT if you have not already done so, much to be learned about oil. Had used Royal purple in the past along with their filters but due to his recommendations I have switched the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum along side the Royal Purple oil filter. It's made with natural gas and the additive package is perfect for high and low mileage automobiles.

Thanks for this! I’ve got an SVT in running condition but I’d love to do some engine resto work in the future, and this is super helpful

hey what timing belt tensioner did you use? I cannot find an OEM ford one anywhere.
@st170restoration
@st170restoration 8 месяцев назад
Hi i got one from the Ford dealer in the end - had a bit of a job finding one and they had to order it from Germany if I remember correctly. It was silly money for a tensioner at nearly £160. There is a Dayco kit that people use that is apparently the same but I didn’t know enough about it at the time. If the Ford one is unavailable that’s the way I’d go 👍

is that a workshop manual you useing and if so where did you get it from
@st170restoration
@st170restoration 9 месяцев назад
Hi sorry for the late reply! The manual I use is just the standard Haynes ones for the MK1 Focus. It covers 90% of stuff with the exception of ST170 specific bits such as the IMRC unit, getrag gearbox, variable valve timing components and a few other tuning company / SVT developed goodies.

What is the plastic clip you used to remove the fuel pipe called? Where can I get one?
@st170restoration
@st170restoration 6 месяцев назад
Hi this one is called the A/C quick disconnect tool I got it new from eBay for about £6. Came as a 7 piece set! So much easier than struggling the lines off with half a hose clip like I did last time 😅

Would it not have been easier to do this on the bench?

Absolutely. I’d take the complete unit out and put it directly onto an engine stand for all of the tear down next time. The original intention was a light refurb only..

Will you have any mods? ITB or kompressor/turbo ?
@st170restoration
@st170restoration Год назад
I’m going to keep it as standard as possible as I don’t want to do anything to change the way the engine delivers it’s power. Power delivery as it is is smooth and progressive and suits both my driving style and the kind of roads I drive on. I may go for several uprated parts as long as they don’t change the driving dynamics - uprated bearings, possibly a baffled sump to protect oil supply to the pick up during spirited driving and potentially an external oil cooler as it may do a long tour one day or maybe even a track day who knows 😅 Just need to ensure that the oil supply is maintained to the pickup and not allowed to overheat during extreme conditions as I don’t want to be changing those bearings again! Other than that mechanically and cosmetically standard 👍
