For sure it can and you just proved it. My wife does 70 on her 883 and she’ll push it to 75 to keep up with the Dyna. But I found the sweet spot is 55 to 60 for it. Good video man.
@SwypePypn

Yeah... anything over 60 it starts to rattle the frame. However, in the summer time when those rubber motor shake absorbers are a lot softer and take more vibrations out... it's like nite and day. And different gearing is always a really good inexpensive option. If you' have a good stage 2 setup... you're running just as fast as all the other motors... until you hit about 70-75 then the bigger bikes keep on giving torque and leave you in their sound wake.

Hello mate, Just got off my Fireblade (1994 RR-R) after just short of 20 years on it. Getting old and wanted to just rumble along. Bought a 2018 883 with stage 1 and love it. Stage 1 must be worth the effort 'cos no problems with cruising along at 70-80. If I had wanted more power, I would have kept the Blade. Lois (my Iron 883) is just the ticket for me!

I don't see why this "handle the highway" must be a topic for conversation. Especially for bikes who are open like that with no fairing. After 65-70 the windblast is annoying, so how long can someone keep that speed and have a comfortable ride anyway? I never go above 120 km/h on my monster 821. The only argument one can make, is that of torque on the 883 when you want to pass someone on the highway. But still... The Iron is amazing and one of the best looking Harleys imho.
@FFL-vg9ro

Just get a 31 tooth front pulley to replace the stock 28. Only $125. It’s like adding a 6th gear to the 883 and drops the highway rpm to about the same as the 1200. Mine does 60 at an even 3000 rpm and runs 70 without being buzzy at all. Acceleration is still great and I’m a big guy. I’m amazed that hardly anyone pays attention to making the gearing better suit their riding needs. Maybe it’s because I come from dirt riding and have changed the sprockets on every dirt bike I’ve owned, to perform better for the conditions I ride in.

@@JoseSanchez-gi7ue I'm not saying you couldn't do it, but the risk of crashing is going to be much higher starting out on such a heavy bike with so much torque. Harley usually has deals with their new bikes and especially the Sportsers where if you buy a new one they will give you 100% of your purchase price back if you trade it in after one year towards another Harley. I would look into that.

Hello GetWrenchd, Sounds familiar, my 91 XLH is doing 3000 at 60 mph and 3500 at 70 mph. I'd rather plan for a slower rider and take the Sporty along the alternate routes like rte 60 East instead of rte.4 east which is a major hi-way or 301 N instead of 75 North. I was told by a very good wrencher, "Riding on the hi-way for hrs at a time even doing 60 mph would really be rough on the bike. Riding route 60 or 301 in FL speed varies, anywhere between 35 to 60 for nice stretches that kind of ride is much better on the bike, and routes 19, 41 and similar main roads."

Hey wrenchd, I have to agree with you on the point of saving funds-get a USED cycle, let someone else get socked with the depreciation costs. That way, you pay $5, or, $6 grand for a bike that was $11, or, $12 grand for the original buyer of that cycle! That is the game-plan for my first bike purchase. Doug🏍️🤓❤️😁🦍🐻

Obviously, a Sportster is not a touring bike. It's a street bike...that can be used for a long cross-country trip, just like every other bike on the market. A friend of mine toured on his Honda Shadow 750. But touring is not the Sporty's forte. Like, there's not a lot of room for luggage. And it's certainly not a two-up tourer. But people who plan to do a lot of touring don't buy Sportsters. Or they shouldn't. There is this conventional wisdom that Sportsters "can't do" Interstate speeds. Nonsense, as you just proved. Yeah, those engines are turning pretty fast at those speeds, but that motor is literally bulletproof. I rode an 883 from Washington State back to Florida, and because I was late leaving Washington, I had to really beat it back home - like 80 mph all dang day for 3.5 days. The bike did it without a problem. And it gave me 55-60 mpg while doing it...seriously, no lie. You want to improve a Sportster's gas mileage? STOP BLIPPING THE DANG THROTTLE! Each time you do that, it squirts a little "extra" gas into the intake. Sportsters are great bikes - they just get a bad rap from riders who think "bigger is always better." It's not.

I have a 2004 sportster, saddleman seat, HD detachable windshield, progressive shocks. Stage 2. I will take a couple of 1500 mile week long rides a year no problem. 8 to 10 hour days very easily. gas mileage goes to shit running 80+ but i couldn't be happier.

Can the Iron 883 handle the highway? I would certainly hope so. I put over 80,000 miles on a 1980 Yamaha XS650 twin, almost all of it highway, and it did just fine. If a bike with 233cc more can't do it, there is something seriously wrong with it. My '06 1200C handles the highway just fine. The 883 does not have enough power to pull a 6th gear.
@peter7624
@peter7624 2 года назад
Can't the gearing be raised by fitting the 1200 pulleys/belt? I've seen chain and sprocket converions on Sportsters too, so there's another way to drop those revs.
@MaaZeus
@MaaZeus 7 месяцев назад
Unless there is a fit issue then there is no reason why not. Bikes with sprockets the fix is easy, just change the front sprocket with a one or two tooth bigger. Acceleration will be slower but gears become longer and fuel economy also improves. If 883 isn't good for highways then the problem isn't power, it is the gearing and that can be adjusted as long as it has sprockets or belt wheels that can be changed to different size.
