@@Secondchancesarerare Wow! I looked up your bike, it is very cool, love it! My eyes are on the Indian Scout or 2004 YAMAHA XV17AS/C ROAD STAR. But first, I need a small, lightweight bike to learn with after which I can upgrade to those mentioned. People like you challenge me daily and I like that. Your bike is very cool and I might put it on my list too..haha

@@BlockheadMoto I got a question. I’ve had that lurching thing happen every time I try to shift to various degrees. I’m curious about blipping and how it would relate to this. Would you combine it with this or would that be too much speed? Example clutch in, blip, downshift, release lever while going back on throttle. This is really confusing.

Just to let you know, yesterday I went to the dealer to get my first bike and I drove it home all by myself (15Km) without never being on a bike before! Just watching all 3 of your videos made me undestand pretty good how to do it! Very good video. I've been riding for about 52 years and your information is spot on. Only one thing that I would add. When you first took off on the bike you mentioned to release the clutch and go. Most first time riders aren't going to be on a bike with enough torque to do that. You might want to mention that they need to ease out on the clutch as they give it some gas. This was the first skill that had to master. Good work Block.

As we used to teach coming from the holster.... "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." Go slow to develop muscle memory, and as muscle memory improves, you'll get faster. Same applies to the action between the clutch and gas. Great vid, sir!

When I was a young teen, when I’d be in the car with my parents, I’d act like was on a bike and did the gas, clutch and shifting. I knew I wanted a bike but never knew when I’d get one. I finally did when I got out of the Marines in ‘70, with the money I saved in Nam. It was a ‘51 Harley panhead. BUT…I didn’t have a bike license and most important, it was a jockey shift. So someone at the shop had to ride it to my house. When I finally fixed it the way I wanted it, I rode it and didn’t have any problems. A friend, who knew it was my fist time, said if he didn’t know better, he thought I’d been riding for years. I guess my backseat practice riding paid off. And at 73, I’m still riding a Harley Breakout.

Thank you for this video! :) I'm from Europe, just starting my motorcycle license (A unrestricted, any cc bikes - we have 4 different A licenses for different cc and kw limits, I could jump to the highest because I'm over 25y.o. and have a car license) and I haven't had any practical classes yet, haven't even done my mechanic and theory exam. I have also never ridden any bike, so I wanted to learn shifting (which is what I'm most nervous about) in theory before I sat my butt on a bike, so that I can make the most out of my classes. One misconception that I had was that it wasn't sequencial! I thought it had actual positions (like push 2cm up for 2nd, 4cm up for 3rd, etc) and I was so confused about how precise I'd need to be to get the right gear on! This has made me WAY less nervous about riding a bike. I just have to say that in most US videos about using clutches, shifts and engine braking, it is so interesting and funny that using these can be so foreign to most people. We only drive manual cars here (automatic is a luxury), so to me, it is so obvious that downshifting leads to rev matching, hence, braking the bike/car. In most videos I see, this concept is explained as something new... because many many US people never drove manual shifts and may not know it. It is interesting how what is obvious for someone may not be obvious for the next person. Also, it's almost 4am here and my cat is staring at me while I train the clutch and throttle motions in the air like I'm some sort of lunatic. :D

I am so grateful for your videos. I hate shifting. I hate it. I went from a moped to a motorcycle and was happier and felt safer on a moped. I just had to focus on traffic/safety on a moped and it was a joyous commute to work each day. I'm a petite 59 year old woman 4 seasons in. This was so helpful. I hope to get the Honda Rebel with DCT as where I live traffic is heavy to/from work. You are the best teacher ever! I wanted to hire a 1:1 motorcycle coach. You would be spectacular at this 😊 I had to take MSF classes in 2 states and you teach slowly, logically and concisely. Just what I need as I panic shifting my manual on hill stops especially. I currently have a 2008 Suzuki Boukevard S40 due to my height and physical strength. I hope someday more low height automatic bikes are offered under 10k. The majority of cars sold are automatic. Bike manufacturers don't embrace this except for tall, expensive adventure bikes. 😢 Lots of female friends gave up after the MSF class and rode a bit then went back to sitting as a passenger 😢

Hey Blockhead love this series, wish you'd continue with more advanced techniques or even more fundamentals. As a newbie rider your videos have helped a lot, got into my first wreck last night and with the exception of a bruised hip, knees, and pride your vids keep me confident in wanting to get better at riding. Keep it up!!

I was nervous after not riding a motorcycle for many years that has a clutch, but after rewatching this and your part 2 - i can almost feel 'like riding a bike again is hard to forget' what it will feel like to get back on a bike. Time to go get aquianted with a bike now ;) thanks!

I've ridden only a couple times before when my best friend tried teaching me on his Ninja, Long story short he shouldn't be a teacher and I crashed his bike. Watching this series, I now know EXACTLY where I went wrong and have a much better understanding of how a motorcycle works and how to ride one. Thank you and also, you should teach for a living you got that gift.

First and foremost - thank you for your service, from a fellow veteran (Army). Be well and come home safe, brother. Knowing how to drive a manual transmission helps in that you understand the theory of using a clutch, it just takes a minute or two to get used to using your hand instead of foot, and the sequential gearbox instead of a standard gear pattern in a car. Iron 883 is a great beginner bike. It's got room to grow, but a (relatively) lighter weight. For me, it isn't about the power that bigger bikes have, it's the weight. Huge difference between a ~560lb Iron and an ~800lb+ bagger.

I LOVE your "how to ride" videos! I know these were made a few years ago but they are incredibly helpful! The attention to detail in explaining shifting is perfect. I also like how you explain when to release and apply the throttle compared to the clutch, most other videos I've found you can tell they forget that they are making content geared toward beginners are leave out little details that they probably dont even realize they do as experienced riders.

I’m 51 with Lupus and severe osteoarthritis and I just passed my MSF course (the first time) 😝 and I haven’t heard anyone explain this so well while on a bike. This is extremely helpful because we only covered shifting into 2nd. 😮 I get that it’s a “basics” course but isn’t shifting part of the basics? Anyway, thank you doesn’t seem to cover the gratitude I have for this video. Thank you!!

watched the whole series - thanks so much for working these up and finding such clear and considered ways of explaining something that can be a bit tricky to demonstrate on camera. I've been watching a ton of videos on the same topic, but yours are definitely among the best (visually and methodically helpful). You thought of and answered so many of the questions I had left even after reading books and watching other videos. 😀

I purchased a Harley Ultra Glider. I’ve been away from riding for years and when I did, it was a crotchrocket. LOL Seems to big a big difference between the crotchrocket and cruiser, but hoping your videos will help me get up to speed. Do you think the glider is too big to reaqaint myself with riding? Or do you think I will be ok. What is your advice?

I've watched a couple of these videos and I am certain this guy is definitely the best coach. You really have the teaching skills, you have the ability to see yourself in our situation or look back in the past and explain things in a way that clears your own mind as well as ours. You are truly great man.
