In this video, I give a few of my first impressions of the Pico 4, focusing on the PC VR experience in Elite Dangerous, and talking about how I feel it compares to the Quest 3 in this initial use.

I don't have much to say about the Pico / Quest. I'm just reminded how long it's been since I've played Elite Dangerous. I've logged several hundred hours and enjoyed it immensely.

I play Legacy Elite now because the graphics are better for VR imo, and it's much easier to get running at a good framerate than the current 4.0 live game. It's my forever-game for VR I think, and I'll always jump into it from time to time.

I have a Pico 4, it's a great hmd. I don't feel a need to upgrade to the Quest 3, but if I didn't already have a Pico 4 I'd totally go with the Quest 3. Fun fact, I play AMS2 and tried the Pico streaming software and link cable just to see what would happen when I connected my Pico directly to the c port on my 7900xtx. I maxed things out and set the SS to 200% and was getting 90hz and latency in the low 20's. Connecting the link cable to a usb card gave similar performance with around 10ms more latency. Not quite VD godlike quality, but a nice compromise to get 90hz.

I have both the Pico 4 and Quest 3, I do have to admit, I do like the Quest 3 better but I am NOT knocking the Pico 4, it's a great HMD for it's price point, the pancake lenses of the Pico 4 aren't as good as the Q3, in the Pico 4, the edges get blurry where everything is clear in the Q3. Everyone's face shape and eyes are different, for myself, I get binocular overlap when using my eyes to look at the side edges of the screens in the Q3, I don't get this with the Pico 4. I find the Q3 is more vivid color wise, better blacks, better clarity, just better. I also have a Quest-2, I like my Pico 4 much better than the Q2.

Yes, the binocular overlap is lower in the Quest 3 and this can cause issues for some people (myself included, but to a very minor degree). It can cause eye strain, and honestly just make things slightly less comfortable. But overall, the image quality for me is what wins the day with the Quest 3. Pico 4 is still a very good piece of hardware though.

I'm running the AV1 codec on the 20 series and it seems to work ok - maybe I'm doing something wrong/right

That's interesting. I actually haven't even attempted it because I was told you need a 4000 series GPU to use it, but now you've got me thinking about giving it a try anyway.

Thank you for doing these videos. I've just watched your crash course on the VR terminology. A friend lend me his Quest 2 for a few days and it convinced me to get into VR but I was bothered by the fresnel lenses artifacts and overall small sweet spot (check out all those new terms I've just learnt). So I looked at the Q3 and the Pico 4. As I have no interest for mixed reality or standalone vr games (only pcvr), I went with the pico 4. It's in the mail as I write this. But now that it's in the mail, Google and RU-vid just throw "Q3 is better though. ." videos at me. The Q3 is twice as expensive where I live so I chose the Pico 4 for price reasons. Hope it'll do fine. I play Elite, DCS and Flight Sim games the most. Thank you again for your very informative videos.

I don't think I was talking too much about the Quest 2. Although, if you feel I was then I'd probably just fall back on the fact that the Pico 4 was originally released as a competitor to the Quest 2 and not necessarily the Quest 3, so that might be why.

I would recommend not to buy pico 4 at all. Pico has closed shop on vr for now canceling all there up coming games and fire all the VR devs. And if having last gen chip not worth it at all. Even if your just going to use for pc. I’m sure some game will come out that you will want to play on stand alone and you don’t want to be stuck with a headset with last gen hardware

No one running PCVR is going to care about any standalone games.

Although it is kind of impossible for them to stop support immediately especially they still have a large player base within Asia and if you only play PCVR regardless if the support stops, as long as we have Virtual desktop then it should not be any issues. Also standalone is never really part of the plans for PCVR only gamers...
