Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality focused content.

I have been involved in covering the VR industry via podcasts and written articles since 2016, starting with 'VR Roundtable', one of the first weekly VR podcasts. Now, along with long-time VR community members, Flukerogi (Rog) & Dazednetic (Lee), I co-host a twice-monthly VR/AR-focused podcast called 'RECENTERED', available on the dedicated RECENTERED channel (www.youtube.com/@RecenteredPodcast) and audio podcast platforms!

I am extremely enthusiastic about VR and AR technology, and while I think it's impressive today, I'm especially excited about the future potential that will be revealed in the coming decades.

I am also an author of five novels, the latest of which is called 'The Memory Engine' and is focused on VR/AR technology in a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek kind of way.

I make videos on VR-related topics I'm interested in on a semi-regular basis. There will be periods of many videos and periods of few videos.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. I felt like I was taking crazy pills after getting my quest 3 and trying out NMS VR. I can get 90+ fps with ultra settings on NMS, and godlike on SteamVR, but the stuttering is atrocious. I switched both NMS and SteamVR settings to lowest and get same amount of stuttering and visual issues. SO FRUSTRATING. I tried a whole bunch of solutions on forums and some seem to help, but stuttering and consistency issues are still present. Glad I'm not the only one. Any new things to try for a smoother experience, or is this just how it is?

I'd need to re-watch it myself to be sure, but I don't think anything covered in this video is necessarily out of date. The fundamentals of frame timings, framerate and reprojection are all still true to this day as far as I'm aware. There might be some changes in how some of those things work in Virtual Desktop for example, but even then it's all pretty much the same.

Great video mate! I'm having issues with adjusting the resolutions though. I have edited the height and width of low, med, and high settings, to 1200 x 1200, but when i get into the game it stays at 1080 x 1080. I even tried to adjust the settings XML file and changing the height and width there, but it just seems to stay the same. Even with it at 1080 x 1080, it is so damn fun to travel around los santos in VR! It would have been cool with controller motion aiming, but the head tracked aiming is actually pretty awesome!

After using it, I'm pretty sure the PSVR2 uses a default resolution scaling of 1.7 in SteamVR to correct for barrel distortion rather than the standard 1.4 (this is an old video where things have changed now). This means that 100% SteamVR resolution scaling when using a PSVR2 effectively means it's rendering at 170% rather than the standard 140%.
@BartCunningham
@BartCunningham 2 месяца назад
I am seeing people recommend setting it to 68% to get the 1.4 scaling properly matched on PS VR2. Is this correct?
@ImmersedRobot
@ImmersedRobot 2 месяца назад
@@BartCunningham it’s difficult to know for certain what the PS SteamVR app is doing behind the scenes, but I would assume that the distortion algorithm they are using requires 1.7x supersampling in order to bring it back to native resolution. That’s the only explanation why 100% shows as 3400x3400 per eye. But I can’t be certain of that, and regardless, that is a very demanding resolution for most PCs.

Primary reason why this game was met with negative reception, apart from the extremely buggy release (of the flatscreen version that is), is that you were locked to flying only one ship. It wasn't unprecedented in the X series, but all the recent titles gave you the freedom to fly just about any ship, fighter sized to capital class. They backpedaled hard with X4 and followed the X3 formula again, with a little inspiration from Rebirth like some of the ship designs, the ability to walk around stations and the game engine itself. And became quite the success, still releasing huge patches and expansions 6 years after release. If VR was more mainstream, this might have become quite popular, because there's just so little to choose from in VR. There's Elite, and that's about it for sandbox space sims that I've heard of at least (I don't count NMS as a space sim, because the focus on space combat and flying is just so low).

If you have dynamic foveated rendering from eye tracking enabled and the game supports OpenVR DFR the you still want to select one of the foveated settings (I use aggressive). 3:20 Yeah, I think that's the part that most modern VR naysayers don't quite grasp. They often use the failure of VR in the '90s as a way to prove how VR is just a fad, gimmick, and flop, but the reality (no pun intended) is that it really is a major part of the future [and current] of gaming, interactive entertainment, and beyond. It's just a matter of when it will become mainstream enough for everyone to get that very clear at this point. And then there will be no going back.

My jaw dropped when I first played this back in 2016 on my CV1. And when I super sampled it, I melted in my chair and said to myself, "This is just the first generation of HMDs....." Edit: I regret selling my CV1 everytime I think back on the headset. It was nearly perfect in all aspects. The blacks were truly black, it was light weight, and those controllers were phenomenal! All Oculus needed to do was bump up the resolution and possibly create a model that used laser for tracking vs the cameras that loaded up the USB bus when running three for better tracking/reduced occlusion.

Yes, with those features (which most people are probably advised in getting anyway) then the price does jump up to make the overall deal a slightly higher tier. It's still probably the best dedicated VR system for the specific types of simulation games I'd only ever recommend the Crystal for regardless. And in that recommendation, the controllers might not be necessary for all - especially, as I say, sim gamers. Although I love my Pimax Crystal, I would never recommend it as an 'all-rounder', and I stand by that for my own use-cases.

Question: is Wi-Fi speed a factor impacting dropped frames and fps in general when casting over to Meta Quest 2/3 ??
@ImmersedRobot
@ImmersedRobot 3 месяца назад
Without being an expert on the network-related bottlenecks of delivering frames to a headset, my guess would be, no (at least not in showing dropped frames on monitoring software). Wifi issues will certainly manifest in perceived stuttering for sure, but when monitoring via fpsVR, I believe that relies on information from the frame processing of the PC itself. So if fpsVR is displaying a dropped frame, then that is a result of the PC itself dropping the frame, and that has nothing to do with network issues (as far as I'm aware). Virtual Desktop's monitoring tools seem to combine this in various ways to provide more information from network-related issues, so that might provide extra information.
