PS2 reached 155m after 14 years Switch is at 140m after 7. The PS2s success wasn't exactly under normal circumstances, it was able to push into abnormal markets by being an affordable DVD player and being supported well into the PS3s life with games like God of War 2.

PS2 (even though a great console), only sold so well because it was the cheapest dvd player at the time. I knew over a dozen people that had one that didn't even play games. Plus I'd bet Sony counted my THREE PS2s. Two of which the disc drives failed within the first months. They were replaced under warranty. My third still works to this day, but those first two died so fast.

Actually no Destin... the back cartridge slot of the Saturn was for ram expansion. You could not play Genesis games on it. And when you said that the Playstation came into the console market cheaper than anyone else at $299.99 the cheapest of that generation was actually Nintendo with the N64 coming in at $249.99 at launch.

Most people dont know how to build optimal gaming pc's. So there will always be a large market for consoles. Until, there's enough onboard computing for handhelds to display in 4k. At that point they'll be made to double as a handheld/VR device, by use of a headclip attachment. Replacing some demand for tv's. The market has only reached some uncertainty on how to evolve.

You address multiple needs they way PC does by including multiple platforms. Phil wanting to bring Epic to the Xbox is a way to bring something that other consoles can't do without requiring a PC.

The PlayStation 2 was a popular console, I think mostly in part to it being a DVD player as well. Do you buy a DVD player, or do you buy a PS2 that plays games and dvd’s. That’s why many bought it. - That being said the PS2 had issues with their disc drive, mine failed to play new games on both my PS2 consoles. But at the time 3rd party games looked and played better on Xbox, which gradually had me wanting to play Xbox more. And Xbox had some killer exclusives from Bioware my go to company during this time for my rpg needs lol I think the Switch catches PS2 sales and surpassing it if the Switch released during the PS2 days. Today’s audiences are competing against cell phones that didn’t exist during that time. So as great as PlayStation is, it’s not the de facto cool console maker in my opinion. To me Xbox, Nintendo and PlayStation all enjoy a share of the gaming “cool” - But you know what else is cool? Hitting that subscribe button and hitting that bell icon 😉 😂 That’s for you Destin. I think as a Xbox player that they will be no.1 still because they do something right and they have a lot hardcore fans. And don’t forget that a lot of people still prefer PlayStation over Xbox plus all the games that they locked out of xbox

I don’t think exclusive matters as much as they do outside of the hardcore. Roughly a 120 million PS4s shipped and only 20 or so million people bought GOW 2018. People buy consoles to play games where their friends are.

Why is Destin confusing Monthly Active users with subscribers to each companies sub service? PlayStation has 123 million MAU as of December 2023 which is the amount of people who are signing into the PlayStation network, not who have PlayStation plus. PS plus is in the ballpark of 44-47 million subscribers. Whereas gamepass is at 34 million. It doesn’t matter if some are core as some of the PS plus number includes people at the essential tier. Xbox has 200 MAU per Satya Nadella (a number that does NOT include mobile per Jez Corden).

23M PS plus subscriptions are from console only snice you need a console for the service. Gamepass at maybe 30+M which is available on Console, PC and Mobile. PS is pretty close which is crazy as that's all console players.

I agree with you on there being Nuance but that Internet user summed it up well regarding exclusives. On the consumer side they're very negative and the younger generation do not like them at all. I myself share the sentiment because having a taste of platform agnostic ecosystem through Xbox... I just love playing my digital purchases where I want. Very similar to PlayStation's Cross-Buy.

It depends, cause right now sony/playstation are looking like they don’t know what they’re doing. A lot of canceled games, layoffs, overpricing EVERYTHING, no roadmaps til next year, jim ryan getting fired, studios closing and having a massive leak last year that exposed their anti-consumer practices etc. Sony/Playstation need to get their shyt together if they want to stay on first place and the only way to that is to do what Microsoft/Xbox is doing which is putting their first party games on PC, have backwards compatibility and have better service with their ps plus premium. Their old strategy of doing things isn’t working anymore, it’s outdated.

Im not worried about the death of Sony or Xbox but I do think we are heading to another golden age of handhelds from everyone just based on messaging from both and the huge success of the steam deck and switch people really want to me included be able to take “real”(triple A exclusives etc) games on the go if Sony or Xbox could make a powerful hybrid system like the switch at a good price point I think it would sell well for the people that want something a little more hardcore than the switch and that is not a dis at the switch

Think about: 125 million players spending about $15 month (just approximating to make calculations easier). Assuming everyone uses gamepass, that's the equivalent of everyone buying 3 games a year. So Gamepass is generating revenue equivalent to selling 375 million individual games per year. Microsoft is doing OK.

Yes PlayStation will stay on top. The problem is that Xbox can’t sell enough consoles or games, because of Game Pass, to ever make up the money spent on Bethesda and ABK. Phil Spencer initially said the Bethesda acquisition was about reaching more gamers UNTIL Sony rejected Game Pass Asobi was part of Sony Japan. Sucker Punch was acquired like more than a decade ago.

Xbox has around 150 million monthly active users across console, PC, and XCloud. But if you count console, PC, and all of mobile, counting ALL of their properties (Activision, King, etc) on every single console and platform, they have around 500 million. PS has 123 million across console and PC.

With very little reason to get an Xbox, the only actual console choice is between playatation and switch. Xbox exclusives are going to other platforms anyway. Playstation has a big game coming out all the time - Xbox doesn't, and the few that are will be going to ps5 anyway. It's as simple as that.

Also if you look at top 10 bes selling systems, 5 of them are Nintendo systems. The total units sold Nintendo is around 800 million, and Sony is at 450 million unit. In addition to that Switch will pass PS2. It is almost there. On 2023 only it sold 15 million. Probably by 2026, it will pass PS2. On the other hand I think PS5 won't even outsell PS4. Also Sony actively sold PS2 until 2013. It got games even at 2014 along with PS4. It sold 155 million in 13 years. In addition to that it was a complete media device. People bought it as a cheap dvd and music player. On the other hand Switch reached to 140 million in 7 years. You cannot do anything other than playing video games. You can't even watch Netflix. It got its success purely as a gaming device in a much shorter period of time. But having said that it has a competitive advantage. It is a secondary system. So Xbox owners, PS owners, and PC owners bought switch. On the other hand people usually own either xbox, pc or ps. In addition to that because of its portable nature they manage to sell multiple Switches to one house hold like a smart phone.
