Can the V100 Mandello S really compare to the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT?

If you put the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello S next to the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, you would never believe that they have so much in common. After all, both are aimed at riders who also value the sporty character of the bike when touring - just in very different ways! But which one does it better?

I don't think you mentioned the Guzzi's drive shaft as a desirable advantage.
@simonlangmead7
@simonlangmead7 6 месяцев назад
Yes, they always never mention the drive shaft advantage. The less I have to do with maintenance the better. All those aerosol cans of chain lube and chain clean really ad up in running costs. You should lube the chain every 300 kilometres (200 Miles) In the distance time of doing one oil change, (10,000 kilometres) you’ll have to lube the chain 33 times. The Guzzi also has a centre stand available that the Yamaha doesn’t. Certain tasks are made easier with that on the bike. We don’t just ride, we have to live with the bike in cleaning and maintaining it.
@markellott5620

@@simonlangmead7 That's interesting about the centre stand I had a 2019 Tracer GT and it came with one. This fashion for not having a centre stand is a pain for cleaning and chain maintenance. While I still have chain drive bikes, for long distance hauling, the shaft on the Guzzi is one less thing to worry about on the road, so that's my first choice for a tour - plus it's great for carrying a passenger and luggage.

@@Ed-lz4jv On balance, I prefer a shaft - especially when touring. One less thing to bother with. However, I realised that only having shafties, I was limiting myself. There are some very desirable bikes out there and I wanted a taste, so I live with the inconvenience of a chain. I still have the shaft drive for the long distance trips.

Being a Guzzi fanatic, what ever you like the most, it always is a fact of comparing apples with pears. I like apples, I go for apples, I like pears, I go for pears. If you take a look at the way Guzzi did the trick with the cilinders and turned the cilinderheads 90 dregs and so the exhausts is spot on. For me, it is absolute a headturner, where the Yamaha, for me, is more or less, an other among many others(but for the price difference you can do quite some km’s more). To send me on a holiday on this one isn’t a punishment). Give me the Guzzi is a festival. The braking power of the Guzzi’s (Brembo) is always a very strong point of all disk- brake Guzzi’s. For me personally, I didn’t miss all electronic extras till so far, I think I won’t miss the at all. Thank you for this video, it made me think again. 👍

Many comments about Guzzi's supposed reliability... Have you owned one ? I think that major manufacturers, these days, all have high quality standards. I've owned a V100S for about 10k kms and only did scheduled maintenance. I also have a 2019 V9 Bobber Sport and never had anything fail on it. I agree with the two criticisms of the reviewer for the Mandello but if you can afford it I can't imagine anyone picking the Tracer on performance and looks alone.
@markellott5620
@markellott5620 6 месяцев назад
People like to cling to outdated myths. Back in the seventies and eighties, they may have had a point. Not today, though. Actually, I disagree with the reviewer on the two criticisms. The mode switch is right where you want it and is easily reached. The quickshifter is no more clumsy than any big twin - best used through the higher gears. I found the same with BMWs.
@gapper3
@gapper3 6 месяцев назад
@@markellott5620 Agreed with the mode switch. Can't believe that this is a complaint. About the quickshifter, dunno... Seems to me that it's tuned to work properly only under very hard acceleration. Used that way, it's fine, just not very useful in daily driving. Just wish it had more of a sweet spot.
@markellott5620

I've owned the previous version of the Tracer GT and now have the Guzzi. I'm not sure that you can compare them. The Tracer is a semi adventure styled machine while the Guzzi is a traditional sport tourer. One is a triple, the other is a V twin and one has a shaft drive. One has a flavour that the other lacks. I'll take the Guzzi every time.
@AuxesisHyperbole666

The Yamaha looks top heavy in these clips, weaving about in the bends where the Guzzi carves out a line more stably. Maybe that's the wider tyres or shorter stature or steering geometry.

Yamaha is a great bike overall but it lacks style a bit comparing to v100. I did a test ride and there is everything you would expect from a mid segment sport tourer. V100 is a totally new platform so you can't expect that everything will be refined and absolutely no issues. Still if you buy one with warranty it should be a safety net for most of them. Take look at new GS1300, also new platform and amount of issues is quite overwhelming especially if you think how older GSes are praised by they owners. I bought v100 cause I like the italian design. If you don't care about it so much then go for yama.

Guzzi's have always been dead reliable, although this engine is so new it hasn't had time to prove itself. Biggest issue with Guzzi is parts supply in North America. I bought a V100S last april and absolutely love it. Rode a Tracer 9 GT last year and it would have been my second choice.

If you dream of a Toyota Corolla as the ultimate car, you buy the Yamaha. If you on the other hand think the Maserati/Aston Martin is the way to go, you buy the Moto Guzzi. Interesting comparison - I wish more reviewers would think laterally & break out of the simplistic categories the marketing folk try to restrict us to. 😆 I’m planning to switch to a V100 Mandello S from a tall rounder/crossover MV Turismo Veloce (probably the closest bike to the Tracer, albeit much higher spec) so I fully appreciate your thinking. Of course, the Mandello is probably closest to the BMW 1250 R and RS but even so the difference in style and character is huge.

@@TeslasSecret It's a brilliant and criminally overlooked bike. For a manufacturer that's pretty much only every made sports bikes and nakeds (if you exclude Cagiva) to have made an almost perfect sports tourer straight out of the box is one of the great under-appreciated wonders of modern motorcycling. The Recluse style clutch is much more sophisticated than Honda's DSC too. It's a very reliable bike (more so than the pre-2010 KTMs and Ducati's that I've owned previously) but it's almost impossible to find a competent dealer for servicing and parts supply is haphazard. For that reason alone, it's not viable as a daily rider. Otherwise it's ride all day fabulous & comfortable. And very practical if you get the factory hard luggage. Good fuel range too.

Sure, what ever you say and it wasn't true back in the day at all. My 1979 CB750F was a mess. Forks bent (too weak), head bearing broke (too weak), Alternatory windings caught fire (three damn times!), 16 valve guides all leaked and burned oils, Swing arm plastic BUSHINGS, not bearings, broke (change them a every oil change!), brakes overheated and purged brake fluid out the reservoir. We can gaslight all we want about stuff but it is a gross generalization.

I can read a bikes spec sheet from the manufacturer's website, yet the specs were covered in this video - why aren't you criticizing that? Drive 200 miles a day for a week and compare both bikes. You will have the Yamaha back. You missed about half of the best characteristics of the Guzzi and why it does cost slightly more for the base model, and a bit more for the upgraded model. Like most bikes you can't add stuff on like the S model of the Guzzi, you buy it that way. And you won't be able to upgrade the Yamaha easily to match even the base model of the Guzzi. But lets say one thing you definitely missed. The Guzzi has soul. The Yamaha is an excellent bike, I like Yamaha's and have a few including an FJ1200, but they are still just a UJP.
