It’s Mauka (Maw-kah, like NOW-duh) and it means Mountain in Hawaiian. Great video. Informative. Good observations. Exactly what I’d expected. I like people who dig up the value-priced gems instead of flexing a name brand (like everyone else). Thank you. And nice that you take a serious approach to a real issue in the bike world (ridiculous prices for everything), but don’t take yourself too seriously.👍😉
I had similar situation with the beading. Had to go use the gas station air pump, then had to go to a different gas station where the pump had more pressure… but similarly, once they popped onto the bead they stayed and didn’t deflate overnight. I ran them tubeless with Stan’s sealant. It’s super leafy where Im at right now, but these things can really keep up. I’m crazy and like to hit some dumb jumps and drops on my trails, so I’m running them at max 50 PSI and having fun.
Thank you for this review. My Maxxis DHF only lasted 4 months on local trails (Bidwell Park, Nor Cal). With these tires being half the cost of the Maxxis I will be ordering a pair soon. Nice to have a budget friendly option.
Thanks for watching. They are still holding up nicely! They are on my new hardtail which I don't ride constantly, but they are great tires in my opinion.
Great video! Spot on regarding Maxxis tire prices. It’s been very challenging to find real world options for replacement tires. Fingers crossed that these hold up in the long term. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
Hey Carl! Can't believe it's been that long. Hoping to get back at it soon. Had a head injury, busy season at work, and a laundry list of other excuses haha. Glad to hear people are craving new content!
I have tried their gravel tires and they have been really solid. I can imagine the Mtn tires are really nice too. So this is what I have been doing with my recent tire purchases. #1 I rarely buy Maxxis anymore, unless they at a serious discount like 40% off. #2 I look at other brands that often go on sale. Kenda,Conti,Schwalbe and Victoria. I actually just bought some Teravail 50% off and some Schwalbe at 30% off. Let’s be rear. We rarely need a specific tire urgently and can afford to wait and save or buy and store till you need them. Just my thoughts, especially now when the bicycle industry is starting to collapse.
It'll be interesting to see what long term durability looks like. Tires do get expensive so a solid, lower cost option would be nice especially for a back up bikem
Yeah the Mauka was my first choice for rear tire. I saw Bikepacking.com recently did a review on the Mauka, and they had very positive things to say about it.
Great review! I have the Krumbien gravel tires on my gravel bike.. 2300 miles on them probably 75% of that is on pavement rather than true gravel. Even with the aggressive tread they have held up great. I just rotated them like 300 miles ago! If I do a gravel race or serious ride, I'll switch to the new pair waiting in the wings, but for training and road rides they still look/ride great. I agree.. they seated easily for me... they far outperform my Panaracer Gravel Kings that I had on prior.. I have not had any issues with sealant weeping.. nor with small punctures from gravel/rocks. In 2300 miles I have 1 puncture. I rode over a 3" long screw that got stuck in the tire.. no tire would survive that. After getting it pulled at the LBS, and riding home with a bacon-strip patch.. I replaced that with two doses from my Dart.. and the tire has been fine. Awesome value in my opinion.... I am considering them for my trail bike so was pleased with your review. I may have to give them a try!
Another great video and informative Kyle. Good for another option on tires and great price. I’m trying out the new continental kryptotal currently maybe I’ll give these a try next.
Saw these on pink bike, definitely an inviting price point! Thanks for giving us a look at em! I do need to say though, it's a bit of an odd choice to put those tires on a hard tail to ride largely xc trails. I would have rather seen the downcountry tire on that bike then popped the assagai/dhr knock offs on a bigger bike to test performance in steeper terrain, something more in line with the tire's intentions. Not sure this tells me much about these tires really.
The downcountry one wasn't in stock at the time when I bought these. Unfortunately I don't have a ton of steep sketchy terrain where I live, and this bike came spec'd with the Minion/Aggressor so these tires aren't a huge change from those. The tech trails at Coler I rode are certainly a bit nastier than an XC trail and these tires didn't fail, so was happy with those results.
Mtb pricing is out of control... I learned this after walking in to a moto shop. Everything in there was less cash than a bike shop. Helmets, jerseys, dirt bikes, and pads... hell even the tires were about the same price as a maxxis.
100% agree! I went to a motorcycle shop in San Antonio when I was visiting family, and this shop also sells Specialized Ebikes. Asked the sales guy if they sell a lot of those and he laughed and said no. He couldn't believe how expensive they are compared to a dirt bike, and I told him a lot of analog bikes are more expensive than certain dirt bikes lol. It was a fun topic to discuss with a motorcycle person.
Looked at backcountry (aka competitive cyclist) and minion dhf is on sale for $84. Looked on my Walmart app and the recommended Goodyear tires for my car (a Prius) are $91. 😬 ouch.
Only time I have got maxxis tires was on sale. Recently got some kenda's and vittorias on sale. I probably won't ever run american classic tires since I have 26 stuff. Would be neat to have american classic tires on my american classic wheels.
I've seen these advertised. I tell you what..maybe I'm just old, but paying as much for mtn bike tires as I do for my armada tires seems crazy. I will give them a try.
haha nah you're not old as I often think the same thing about a car tire roughly being $100. They support thousands of pounds and reach speeds a bicycle isn't capable of. Of course a specialized off road tire for trucks is more expensive than a road going tire, but still makes me think about the rising price of bicycle tires.
The new Kenda pro tires are amazingly fast, but do lack the grip of other brands. I had American Classic on my do-it-all gravel bike and they were surprisingly fast and just plain awesome. But for some strange reason they smelled like a horse barn. Weird
Add a Hawaiian shirt and you could play a Magnum P.I. in a foreign knockoff.... I looked at these on Amazon myself because like you, I don't have the budget to be spending $100 a tire. I may see about ordering a set.
@@CobraKyle 🤣🤣 Kind of a bummer, I couldn't find an American Classic tire in 27.5+ on Amazon. I have not torn a sidewall, but a set of Maxxis Rekon+ tires I had, the outer knobs were literally non-existent after about 3 months. I am currently running a set of Vittoria Martello 27.5 x 2.8's and after one year of riding, no flats, one tiny puncture the sealant took care of, and the only issue (if you can call it one), are that the gray sidewalls are scuffed ALOT. I ride more tech/natural terrain, not into machine built trails, even though I did enjoy the Back 40 w/ the Ledges
in the Philippines .. maxxis tires only cost 32 - 40usd... 40usd for the 3c max terra version so much difference in prices schwalbe & michelin do have the same us pricings here
Just bought a mountain bike with tubeless ready rims. I have 2 questions. How are they holding up? And what is the difference between the Trail and Enduro versions of the tire?
I don t get how come maxxis tires are so expensive in US.. 95$ ?? In europe I never payed more than 55$ on maxxis.. even 2.8 wide 3c are around 60-65$... And there are often discounts wihich I always use.... Strange....
comparing times on set of different tires in this fashion is quite misleading, especially that 1 second. That could have been anything... you feeling tired, a sudden small breeze in your favor, an extra pebble or two you rolled over (or didn't roll over). Even the 5 seconds is misleading. Hell, I could prob burp and fart and gain or lose a second or two. Still, interesting video cuz now I want to see what these tires are about.... especially if I can save 1/2 the cost.
They've been great. I've had no punctures, they hold air, and still have a good amount of tread. I haven't been riding on them a ton in the winter, but I'm liking these tires.
Maybe these tyres were designed like a tyre for tubes, with non tubeless tyres the bead usually is looser and wants to go to the centre of the rim. so maybe they did a mistake.
@@CobraKyle I think it's tubeless tyre but molded into a shape of a tube tyre or the this specific rim and tyre combo is tricky. did you try it on multiple rims?
