As a kid I often raided my mom’s knitting yarn and tied it around a small hook with maybe a wing and tail made from the odd feather that I had found from some unknown bird. I would then head to a local pond to try out my creation on sunfish of various species. They always seemed to be successful, some more than others. Thanks for the video!
Last year for started in tenkara with a $7 Amazon rod and some cheap flies from the local store. Hooked fish and I was hooked too 😊 love the way it helps you focus on your technique and less on the gear. Keep up the great videos 🤜💥🤛
There is no reason that these fled shouldn’t catch fish; simple ones that anyone can tie in minutes. Mr. Walmart did not tie them but rather their son! The fish are so small that it’s hard to count them?
This was really cool! I have all of the Cortland flies Walmart offers and have caught fish on pretty much all of them at one time or another. I used to live in Cortland NY near the Cortland factory store. Used to buy lots of stuff there.
I swear by the prince nymph pack at walmart. The rainbows and brookies love them here in the Blue Ridge Mtns, disclaimer: they look nothing like a prince nymph lol.
Very interesting, I'm glad you made this video. When I was MacGyvering up my makeshift "tenkara" kit - and having zero experience or knowledge of fly fishing - I was overwhelmed by the array of fly choices at the sporting goods store, and finally just decided to get a very similar 4-pack from Walmart. At the time, I felt like I was probably committing some atrocious fishing sin by doing so, and never ever would have admitted it to anyone before seeing you have 100% success with them. Granted, I have not caught any fish with them, but I've only tried once, LOL. The whole time, I was convinced that I wasn't catching anything because of the Walmart flies, and I gave up pretty quickly, but after seeing this, I now realize that perhaps it had more to do with the spot I chose rather than the fly itself. I didn't even get a fishing license for 2020, but perhaps when our lockdown is lifted, I will get my license and give this a bit more diligent effort. Would love to see more "challenges" like this, it brought an extra level of fun for sure!
Yeah, as I said in the video, a lot of the time it doesn't really matter what kind of fly you're fishing with. Depends on the water, though. And those first times of fishing on your own when you don't know what you're doing can be frustrating. You don't know if you're doing something wrong, if the flies are wrong, if the creek sucks, or if the fish just aren't cooperating. But stick with it! It gets easier and better, I promise.
Socialiy conscious? Budget or not, I've tried to always support small independent fly tiers. Haven't always been successful, but it's been 25+ years since I've shopped those particular corporate giants. I feel like what few $$$s I have, go farther & I feel better. I like that you're not an anything snob!
It's weird seeing that many flies at Walmart. We don't have trout down here, so my store only has a few to choose from. My first rod comes in tomorrow, and I'm going to pick some up and see how they do for panfish.
I enjoyed this video immensely. Love the easy nature of it; your approach and voice. Fun kind of "challenge" to me. I'm long time Tenkara guy (since 2011, aged 70).
i have tied a fly on the creek side from a #8 mustad hook and for fur i used some hairs i pulled out of my dogs tail and for string i used the elastic from one of my socks i was wearing that day even caught a couple of nice brook trout
LIke your other fans, whether it's a challenge like this or just hanging out with you in a video while you fish, you're a very easy to get along with kind of guy. Keep these videos coming.
When I started to learn how to fly fish I'd buy cheap flies from Walmart. Caught many of fish with them. The fish don't care where you bought your tackle from, it's up to the fisherman to make them want to bite.
I fish bass and trout so naturally I watch all of the other channels also and have seen all of the Walmart challenges. It was cool to see you incorporate it into Tenkara fishing.
My first tenkara catch was with a Walmart Cortland olive drab wooly bugger the a friend sent me. I thought i had a snag at first. I can not find Cortland here in Texas and Walmart will not ship them here. GOD Bless you and your families
I don't care about challenges. I like to see the scenery and surprising fish in small water. Once, I was sitting in a fairly small stream on a hot day in Colorado. A trout the size of my calf sidled up and shared my eddy. I didn't move till I was frozen. I hope you find one like that.
I wish in Colorado Last Summer fishing for 2 weeks using all kinds of flies they were telling me that were working my last day there I ran the Walmart grab a couple of dry flies and I ended up catching to Cutthroat to Brown's of a rainbow and I lost to all on a Walmart fly.
As long as you aren't fishing a heavily pressured spring creek or fly that requires good action, cheap flies are fine. They aren't as durable but most of my flies are lost to trees and snags anyway.
Love your videos. Not sure if this question has been answered yet, but how did you replace the net on the handy pack net? I want to get one, but I would love it with a measure net. Hope to see you in the stream one of these days. You are in my neck of the woods. 😁
I'm only a year and seven months or so late to this video, but I'm always interested in cool little challenges that these other channels do. If you were to some out like this again, I'd certainly cue it up!
I know there are probably dozens of others out there, but it would be cool to see YOUR process of tieing a Kebari. Your materials, favorite patterns, tieing set-up, etc.
Nice looking flies but I think I'll stick to buying flies from local fly shops in the areas where I'm fishing. Helps small community businesses. Enjoyed the small stream fishing.
That must be a regional thing. Most of the stuff at my local WM is salt and inshore, with some tackle for Bass and Panfish. I'd buy those flies. I bet they're online.
Nice challenge. Thanks. Of the 15-20 minutes to catch trout on four flies, maybe 5-10 minutes was changing flies and tying knots in your tippet. Do you weight your tippet to get the flies down in the water column, please?
Jim Misiura, who posts a fly tying and fishing channel on RU-vid, by the same name, ties and markets his beautifully tied nymphs, dries, streamers, and terrestrials on Etsy.com under the name flymanjim. They are gorgeous flies and work much better than Chinese string flies, and they cost from $2 to $3 each. Less in sets.
Nice video, and stream. My Walmart doesn't have flies like yours, wish they did I would give'em a try. How do you like the new netting? I have the same net, so far no issues with original CR netting, but will use the measure-net when needing to be replaced.
I hated the original nylon net that came with the Handy Pak Net. The Measure Net one is much better. It catches on fish teeth and fins far, far less because of how fine the mesh is on the measuring part. I'm happy with it.
Another great video. I like the challenges. Maybe next time put it out to your subscribers. Ask what type of challenge you should tackle next. Just a thought. I really like the replacement net on your Handy Pak net. I actually have both those nets. Gonna give that a try.
Love ur videos! Since you give the location you are at on your suv channel, why not list body of water you are fishing on this channel? Beautiful streans...
This reminded me of one of my first times fly fishing, back in 1990. I was self taught, my girlfriend and I were in Yellowstone fishing the headwaters of some stream. We caught tons of 3-5" trout. They were so tiny but it was a lot of fun.My rod was a Shakespeare rod I bought at a hardware store. Had tons of fun, but it wasn't a very good fly rod. Would have been a great tenkara rod.
Good stuff 👍 If possible, maybe Amazon fly assortment next? I got a set, but I can't get out much due to my location in the Phoenix valley and haven't tried them yet.
Those flies have very cheap materials are not b or c are d quality they are tied in some countries with poor quality workers and imported to the U S in huge numbers
Your videos are great way to pass the time when not fishing. Would love to see more gear tests of cheap rods and hopefully a more detailed look of your diy backpacking net. Keep up the good work and keep fishing.
great video. it's nice to see it switched up a bit. the only thing I have noticed with Walmart flies is their longevity. I no it's not traditional in tenkara to use head cement but it helps those flies out a lot.
Cortland line company is actually a fly fishing company that’s based out of Cortland NY here in the states and I’m pretty sure that’s one of their assortments. I’ve got one of their euro nymphing rods and I’ve caught some real nice fish on it. Surprising to see their stuff all the way out west though!
As has been stated already, these are NOT Walmart flies. They are flies SOLD in Walmart but MADE by Cortland, a very well respected producer of fly lines and fly fishing equipment. It's like buying Tide detergent from Walmart... Walmart did not make it. They're just selling it. That having been said, if Walmart DID make flies, yes, they would still catch fish. Don't mean to be a killjoy, but the title is a tad misleading.
I kinda wondered that at first also 😳 When did Wal-Mart get their own line of flies 🤔 I used A Lot of Cortland products when I first started fly fishing many years ago. And the bulk of it was from Wal-Mart. This is however a wonderful video!! I live in the Treasure Valley of this great state and enjoy fishing it's productive waters 👍
Presentation is definitely more important than fly choice; my favorite fly is a dry that was originally developed to imitate two early-season mayfiles in the Southern Appalachians - I catch trout on it year-round, and it's worked great out West. Also, I've never fished traditional Tenkara flies with my Tenkiara setups - I've just used "traditional" flies.
That was a beautiful little stream. Those WalMart flies seemed to work just fine. How did they compare in price to what you usually use? Enjoyed your video very much.
