In this video I'm introducing you to my new project car: a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 220CE (W124 / C124).
I managed to pick this beauty up for the grand total of £500. Obviously, it's a non-runner and was just about to be scrapped. I delve into all the issues it has (many) and we try to get it started. I'm so excited to work on this one.
⚠️ I've been using HP Academy to learn all about car wiring, welding for motorsport, engine building, and tuning. Check out their courses at the following link and use the discount code NEV50Y to get $50 off any course!

I checked the MOT history on this car ... makes for scary reading. I've had a few 190e versions - a common thing to fail is the fuel pump and OVP relays. I bought a 1.8 W201 that wouldn't start without cranking for about a minute, wouldn't tick over, kept stalling, etc. Otherwise immaculate. Seller let it go for next to nought. £40's worth of Chinese made relays turned it into an awesome daily runner.
@piotrjedrzejczak3865
@piotrjedrzejczak3865 2 года назад
I had the exact same model, was also randomly stalling - the culprit was a silver relay located behind the battery. It was damaged by water, a very common issue on these, check it and make sure to seal it if it is not damaged yet. Unfortunately I had an accident and had to total the car - missed it ever since. Best of luck!

A thing to be wary of, Mercedes used a biodegradable insulation on the wiring (I believe) and it has a tendency to crumble with age. The worst location is under the cover over the plugs due to heat. I had an E280 and had to have the entire loom replaced. Also there is a way to open the bonnet to vertical for easier access on W124 models. Good luck with bringing the car back to life.

It is indeed a weak speed - but luckily it’s more of a problem for the six cylinder engines than the four cylinder engine here.

So I spoke to one of the previous owners yesterday who told me that he had the wiring loom replaced a few years ago, so hopefully that problem should be solved already. Will certainly save me a few quid and a load of effort!

I think a lot of people know why the mirrors are like that. The path length from the eye to the mirror is different for the passenger side & the driver's side, because you don't sit in the center of the car, therefore the dimension of the mirror would need to be different each side to get the desired viewed area.

Love your video's man. Absolute binge watch material. I'm driving around in a 30 year old Volvo 240 wagon that i try to keep on the road myself. Had to lauch when you diagnosed the faulty relay, told everyone a moment later you're not a 'real mechanic' when it comes to diagnosing car issues, and then find a work order in the boot that states replacement of exactly that faulty relay because of engine issues 😂
@andrewkiwi1
@andrewkiwi1 2 года назад
Im a mechanic in NZ. I used to work on the W124s and this is one of the later ones. The motors are good but i remember we replaced a lot of airflow meters on them. They are mounted on the air intake hose just behind the air filter box. They also need fuel pumps when they get old as the resistance gets high in the fuel pump and they stop working. The best thing to do is spend the money and get it scanned at a merc shop. Another thought i had is One of the merc trans's has a sensor plate in the trans sandwiched above the valve body with a round plug that goes through the the side of the trans. If the ecu doesn't get a signal from the sensor plate to show the motors running it stops and shuts off the relay for the fuel pump. Its designed to stop the fuel pump running if you leave ign on without the motor running. If you need to buy one get the three "O" rings that fit the plug as they can leak if they are disturbed.

Your enthusiasm and genuine excitement with this car is a joy to watch keep it up 😉 There are some good pointers tp follow up on in the comments attached. Water ingress is another area to keep an eye out for, especially with electrical items tucked away in less than ideal positions.

hey nino good video love the good old 124s. I've been driving 124 as an everyday car for 18 years now. from my experience the first thing you need to check is your insulation on the wiring in the engine compartment remove the black cover with the star on then you can see the wire. and behind your battery / black cover where you should be able to see your part number and year on the wiring if it's from 1993 then it should probably have a new one. number 2 check throttle body for wiring harness they are famous for breaking after all those years. number 3 replace your maf you can scan for the code with an OBD1 Diagnostic code reader for Cars with the 8 or 16 Port number 4 check your ovp relay it helps to control the idle in your 124

Re the great interior condition, I think it has been garaged for most of its life so the UV rays haven't baked the leather etc. Also the needles on the instruments are still their proper colour when they would normally be faded to yellow or even white. Good luck with the car I had an estate and it was great!

A common problem with relays of that age is cracked solder joints on the relay PCB (due to mechanical vibration each time the relay is energized). It makes sense to suck the old solder and refresh the solder joints

What's not to like? I have 4 190e s and all bought for under 500 pounds one for 250. Even with work needed doubtful it will depreciate and it has the three pointed star on the bonnet. Better than spending thousands of pounds on a new type bubble car as I term them. Others will disagree.good luck with it and I'm sure you won't be disappointed with the end result. Rog

Yes something retro that looks awesome, I daily drive a 1988 Nissan Bluebird and it's been a kind of rolling project. Older cars are definitely less complex and all the work I've done has been with my Haynes manual about 100 pounds worth of tools and on the side of the road. Definitely be careful though of siezed bolts and for some reason my nissan has lots of Philips and flat head screws which strip so easily. If you come across lots of 'normal screws' I would definitely invest in the Halfords advanced impact driver set which is only 15 pounds and has saved me many times. Good luck with the resto and I look forward to these videos.

I used to cab a 123 back in the 80's when my colleagues were cabbing cortinas and hunters etc. They used to ask "how can you afford to cab a Merc". Well Six trouble free years later I asked them "how could you afford not to? 😃😃 Looking forward to this one... C124 is great , worth saving . Think the colour is Titanite? Your C124 is also one of the mid life ones with a later 220 engine (bit better mileage and performance than the 230) but the first era grill with the hood ornament on the grill not like the later ones with it in the bonnet. Many were converted to bonnet so nice you have the original set up. I think its quite good having one of these in between models best of both worlds so to speak. Air con and a roof is unusual in a 220 also ! Good luck

I'd check the OVP Over Voltage Protection relay which resided behind the plastic cowling to the back of the battery. I think they're about £70 from the dealer, usually has a fuse located on top. You stated there was a lot of clicking in that area? I've always wanted a 300CE, but currently have a 2.6 190e. Also corrosion wise, check the jacking points behind the plastic side skirts. .......Oh you've just mentioned the OVP whilst I'm typing.

I think you’ve got a diamond in the rough there. I’d wager the front wings have been replaced already and that’s one of the key rust issues for this model; the rust on the rear arch looks doable and the paint looks like will come up good with some treatment. One area to keep an eye on is rust on the jacking points as they’re covered and the plastic cladding can hide a number of sins. A great choice of car when you get it back n the road.

Was not expecting THAT ! Like a kid in a sweet shop (just look back at the way you tore the contents of the very tidy (and valuable) boot! You seem absolutely thrilled with your new purchase, Nino, and I am similarly thrilled for you! You would be surprised how well that paint is going to come up after a proper deep soak and a machine polish - you might also think about acid cleaning the rims, and you would be surprised what a tin of Kiwi Shoe polish and some leather cream will do for the interior, but all that can come after she starts purring for a continuous period. Tend to agree with you on the overvolt relay as the start point - personally I would have taken that ECU cover off and had a good mooch round in that area as/when she cuts out, as it could be something as simple as a loose connector or a bad earth - that said, if 60 quid does solve the problem it's money well spent, so can't fault you on wanting to get things moving. Really looking forward to subsequent vids on this, and so happy that you share the passion and principle to keep the 'aul Girl rolling Keep 'em comin' JCHK

The OVP relays can come with different pin connectors so make sure you get the correct one. Other things that go wrong with them is the solders break in one that is old and you can open them up with some work and resolder the board inside. Use your phone or a good light and magnifying glass or a clear zoomed in photo and you can often see cracked solder joints which can be a simple and cheap fix. Also replace the voltage regulator in the alternator (5 minute job) and you've solved two common idle and engine issues for cheap and easy. At least you remove them from being future problems and off the table. Also try and by OEM or you'll be chasing problems for all your days.

Check the air intake system and the sensors or take them off and bypass the sensor and check or replace the fuel filters might solve alot and make diagnose alot easier.

Ive a w140 that I’m doing at the moment. Was a mates dads car but he died. Like you I’ve no intentions of ever getting rid of it. I’ve worked on a lot of cars but I’ve never seen the gauge of steel on a car like an old merc.

I would also suggest looking at the relay box to see if there is corrosion along the tracks.

If it's had 2 new batteries and an over voltage relay, I would check the charging system. Could be the voltage regulator allowing over charging.

yes try the OVP common to the 190e also. Should have a fuse in the top and may have a fuel pump relay also. good luck with the project. my advice dont change too many things at once or u end up not really knowing what the fix was! 👍

Debris in the fuel would be my first guess, before and after the fuel filter! Very very fine debris after the filter is common on a car that age and mileage.

Your mercedes merck is cherry red colour it could do with a good wash then the colour may come back or the car may need re spraying work needs doing on it but you could do it in your garden in your commercial marquee with your bright commercial lights put up on stands once they are plugged in then at least you can work on all of your project cars out of the rain and out of the wind and out of the cloudy weather and out of the fog at least you can put your cars on the commercial ramps and you can start working on your project cars in the dry at least you can close the marquee doors
