I love your work and videos Ben, and your terrible sense of humour! 😅 I am restoring an E9 myself, and learned that the outer sill also is to be spotwelded to the middle sill/membrane where they meet a bit up on the outer sill. (Near the profile). Maybe you already did it, but since I made that mistake myself, I thought I’d mention it. 😊
The colour blind painter..... excellent story ! I repaired a gold (looking) Sierra in the 80s hit in the rear, went to the paint shop, I fitted it up and then it got valated, it was very dirty. One colour at the front another colour at the back ! The boss..... my dad was not happy, everyone bollocked, even the mechanics who had nothing to do with it.
No he didn't he was old school, a lot of swearing ! He got over it. A lot of work on the bmw, good job. Just done a rotten Merc camper, two sheets of 4x3' steel, 1/2L primer 1L u/seal 2 L wax oil, 1/4 ton heavier !
@@darrenhearn1365 Merc are super at rusting, just look at the VIto, don't know why, it almost seems like they are engineered to rust. A company that can build such great vehicles mus be aware of what they are doing.

Nice job Ben, very interesting car. I know what you mean about the hole punches. another great channel to watch is Yorkshire Car Restorations. I noticed Steve at YCR using the punch a few times in quick succession to punch a slot instead of a single hole, giving more of an area for the plug weld. Thought that was a pretty good idea personally. Anyway, looking forward to future videos.
Thanks, yes I've watched some of YCR's stuff, they have got a large following. People just seem to like watching what they do to music. I watch really to see how they make their popular videos rather than the anything else but they seem to do a decent job. Interesting they use the hole punch more than once to make the hole bigger. They have obviously found the same thing and solved it another way. 👍
Nice work. You're not going to believe this, but I served the first couple of years of my apprenticeship with a colourblind Czechoslovakian spray painter. Nice bloke who knew how to make something from nothing. Must have been an interesting story about how he got to the UK in the 1980's, but he never told it. He'd wander over with some paint and ask what colour it was, could see the shade perfectly though. I like the diamond dresser, I make these from damaged diamond core drill bits and use them to keep the bench grinders true.
No way! That is amazing you knew someone too that was a colour blind sprayer. I think the chap that did mine could see the shade differences ok as well, he had been spraying cars a long time. It''s odd though how he could see a shade difference in the same colour but couldn't see a shade difference between green and yellow.
@@bensclassicbodywork The thing that boggles my mind is, Why ? If I was colourblind, the last thing I would pick is a career that relied on colour. I wondered if my guy had no choice of job in Czechoslovakia ? and just continued when he got over here?
Yeah, that is strange, painting is hard enough if you ask me. The guy said that his condition must be getting worse. Not sure if that was just to try and justify the mistake or being colour blind does get worse over time. 🤷♂️
😆👍 I use a 10mm belt sander which as you say finishes welds lovely. I did have a 20mm belt sander years ago but it broke and I never replaced it. Need to get one again as it would speed things up.
Very interesting part. It is also the question where to stop with the rust removal by cutting parts off. I believe many pf your fans would like to see more parts from such rare cars and complicated in repairs as E9 CSL. Especially a this model was using steel with aluminum together to make the body lighter. Is the car confirmed to be VIN- correct CSL? The number can give the info about the original paint code and priducion date one provided to BMW Tradition. It is for free but it is also possible to get printed certificate but probably not for free. Take care and till next part!
Thanks! Yes I have checked the VIN to see if it was definitely a CSL. Can't remember the other details, will have to check again. I don't think it told me whether or not it was an Alpina. I think the Alpina had a limited slip differential which I haven't checked either. Easy to do on the ramp actually. The aluminium body panels are limited to the bonnet, and boot lid, then aluminium door skins. I don't think there was anything else aluminium but the roof is a lighter gauge steel. There might have been some other steel panels with a lighter gauge but I'm not sure. Perhaps I should do more videos on it if it's interesting. It's certainly an interesting car in my opinion.
Very impressive work but why not use a real spotwelder, - they are quite compact, - will save a lot of time not having to grind every weld down, - and it will look more factory !
They can save time true and I have a 1+1 spot welder. No good for sills, I would need a 2+2 spot welder for that. They are pretty limited in their use and the metal has to be spotless. I would trust it on new metal to new metal but not on old metal unless it was media blasted. Sill's are very important for strength and I need to trust everything is welded properly. I might invest in a 2+2 but I'm not sure it would get a lot of use. I'll have a think about it though. 👍
Thanks, I have a spot welder it's only a 1+1 so couldn't be used on sills as they are a bit thicker. I could get a bigger one it's true and maybe I'll invest in one at some point. They are a bit limited in use, I'll only use it when I've got new steel to new steel, unless the the mating faces are very clean, wouldn't want to risk any seams not being strong. They differently have there use in areas that are seen for that original look, front wing gutters for example i would be keen on using it.
@@bensclassicbodywork I have one on loan at the moment and you are right they are limited in use but god when you can they make light work of it. Mind you if I could plug weld like you it wouldn't be so appealing. Keep on keeping on.

Lovely comment, you're too kind! No youngster of my own to pass it onto I'm afraid, I do have a nephew who is quite keen. We built a go kart together a few months back. 👍 its ok, nothing missed on the Alfa, it's still being worked on. I work on usually 3-4 cars at a time and just alternate between them. I find it keeps the job more interesting and sometimes you have to wait for panels to arrive/ bills to be paid etc. The Alfa project has been pretty much all documented on YT and I would like to continue that for as long as possible. I don't do too coat spraying anymore so that will have to be done elsewhere and I expect the owner will put it back together. He's indicated to me that he would like the underneath media blasted and painted like I did the Renault 5. The suspension would need to be blasted and powder coated to get it back on its wheels, from there it will probably leave my workshop to get sprayed and reassembled. If that's the case it would be great to video the car all finished and I'm sure the owner would let me do that. He's been pretty keen so far.
