I thought it was worth having another go at the chrome on this vintage Star Wars Death Star Droid as new paints have arrived since I recorded the first video.
And this time I am very happy with the result. Check out how I got on.

Add some floor polish with future shine over the chrome pen. Makes it REALLY shine and will not rub off.

I LOVE that you revisited that Death Star Droid! You're like a scientist that keeps revising his work. It amazes me that you were patient enough to wait for a month to finish up the project. Your great success makes me want to find one in need of repair and do it myself. It also makes me want to buy a modern DSD and make it look more like a vintage.

To protect the Molotow Chrome finish it can be coated with an acrylic resin. I use Vallejo's Gloss Varnish 70.510. I find it's easy to use and gives very good results with hardly any dulling of the chrome. Also the Molotow liquid can be brushed or air brushed on rather than drawing with the pen for easier coverage.

Pledge floor gloss revive it also works as a clear coat for Molotow Chrome.

Thank you Dave! These pencil brushes give a good result and I have a little advice for you to remove the chrome more quickly and ecologically: use "Easy Off" (furnace cleaner). Spray and leave on for 15 min., chrome disappears with a toothbrush!😁

It's magic through the airbrush and I give it a good week to flash off. I would stay away from the Humbrol acrylic he uses as I think it's a pretty average paint and I use MR Hobby lacquer based paints which leaves a much better finish and is more durable.

While researching very expensive chrome paints for vintage auto restoration and custom work I found that nearly all quality “chrome” paint requires a black base coat to look proper. This may be a strategy you can try in the future with that pen.

More likely coated with aluminium through vacuum deposition. You can electroplate plastic, but you need to put down a conductive substrate first. Probably an expensive process to set up but they would have made millions of these, scale of economy.

They must REALLY, REALLY hate Toy Polloi on some of the vintage toy collector message boards! The other toy collectors => "Let THEM (the broken toys) DIE! It'll make the unbroken toys more valuable!" There is kind of a snooty attitude that develops among collectors. They're like Gollum wanting to be holders of the one, true ring except the ring is a stupid 40-year-old action figure!

@@AvengerII I've always been of the opinion that nothing should be rare. If a Superman comic #1 can be reprinted and sold for a few pounds then that's all I need. I don't want something because it is rare (after all, that's not why we got these toys back in the day), but because it is something that I can appreciate.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 5 лет назад
@@garym6315 In an ideal world, yes. As far as comics go, I NEVER bought them because I expected them to go up in price and I was going to sell my collection to the "next sucker." I bought for characters, storylines, and creators I LIKED. When you buy something JUST to collect it and sell for a mark-up, I can't see how you're enjoying it. I got out of comics nearly a decade ago because I wasn't enjoying the stories they were making. Right now, if I buy anything comic-related, it's a reprint in trade and hardcover and it's always something I enjoyed in the past, a creator or storyline I like. 99.9% of the time these are comics that were produced well before the 21st century -- 1980s or earlier. I have no use for the nihilism in modern mainstream superhero comics right now. It's awful! I also don't care for the mentality of most active creators and the constant pissing on the fanbase. It's insane!!!!

If you have an airbrush, use the Molotaw chrome paint to airbrush pint the guy. Wait 2 days, then spray with Alclad Klear Kote. It is the only clear which doesn’t cause it so gray out. Wait another 2 days and it will be rock solid and will be able to be touched without being damaged.

@@toypolloi have you tried the chrome Molotow pen, let it cure/dry then spray some Molotow Belton Premium transparent yellow over the top? It may possibly be a solution. The spray can be used on glass and generally all surfaces and it's clear enough to show what ever base colour is beneath. In the case of spraying it on glass it retains the glasses natural transparency. Just a thought.
