By the way, you actually do need to manually enable the Apple Silicon/Universal binary option under Project Settings->Platforms->Mac (if memory serves, the setting is in there somewhere anyways).

@@EnovairStudios Yes, double checked the location, it's in Project Settings->Platforms->Mac and then under the heading Packaging, there's the option 'Architectures to Package For' where you can pick Intel/Apple/Universal. I haven't tried it myself so I can't say if it works, but from what I've seen it defaults to 'Intel x64' on new projects. Might be worth trying both universal and apple only if the universal option doesn't work. It does say it's 'experimental', so YMMV. Also, I'm using the latest UE5 built from source, so it might be different from yours.

Just gave it a try on UE4, doesn't build, getting missing precomputed errors so I need to check this out more. I'm going to try using UE5 from the latest source code

Thank you, After download Unreal 5, doesn't open UNREAL, keep asking for XCode ( Can't Find Xcode Install For Metal Compiler in MacOS) I try Sudo tips but still the same. Maybe versions 4 works better. Definitely will check about "Apple Silicon/Universal binary" Thanks again.

Can't find any tutorials about making Film only using Unreal Engine with Mac mini M1, do you have a video tutorial ? I like to know if it is possible before spending a lot of time testing. Thank you

Thanks for reaching out. I don't have any experience using Unreal for film. My guess is that the biggest thing you will need to check is lighting and making sure the plugins you use if any are compatible

you're right.. ARM is here to stay. I've used Mac since 1991 and every time I shop for a PC I feel like I'm shopping for a beat up farm truck versus a Tesla roadster

lol. To be honest i have been a PC user for my whole life and do still love the platform, I didn't like the laptop reliability though. Whats great is it seems like we have options now

Hey, thanks for the comment. There was a tweet about it from the CEO. I'll need to find it. But on the GitHub in the release notes you can see that they are making M1 fixes and the ability to make M1 native game is in the engine just in experimental. I tried it and could only get it to work for blueprints projects

This is of course an interesting question... but if you stopped and thought for two mins what has been release that does make use this engine to make native mobile games for the iPhone and iPad already today. so as M1 Mac are using the same core technologies and frameworks underneath and that the apple iPhones and Mac's, show it can work natively on M1 based Macs... In short Answer would yes. How ever... not all tools and technologies can run natively for example UE5 Nanite, and Lumin don't currently work and I am sure their are others as well... but log and short of it, if it can export and support metal, apples equivalent to Open GL or Direct X, then it will be native and fast.

Thanks for the comment. While the chip is the based on the same tech the SDK is different. So right now making an M1 native game doesn't work and is still in experimental. I know they are working on it but for now it doesn't work.

Do you know if VR development is supported in Unreal for Mac?

I'm not sure. The only VR headset I have is the PS4VR so it may be harder for me to test. I'll try to do some research

Hmm it should work then the only difference between the M1 and these M1 pro / max are that they came with Monterey. I'll add it to my testing list

I only have a ps4 VR headset not a PC VR set so I may not be able to test this for a while. What i do know is that if the platform is PC you still need a PC to build

Hey, for sure you can start learning. I'm not sure how well Unreal will run on that spec but unity should have no problem. I think the design principles of game design can be learned on either Unity, Unreal or even Godot. I would say give it a try and let me know if you have any issues, I'll do my best to help. Also, I am starting a tutorial series so hopefully that will help

@@simply6162 for a typical indie game you won’t notice the differences, for AAA with heavy graphics you might. Nothing I’ve done showed anything noticeable

Unreal Engine is not designed for MacOS on both developing and running.

Thanks for the comment. I agree it's not designed for MacOS although it is supported. My testing is to show what problems if any we could see if using Unreal so people can make an informed decision. The fact unreal can build native m1 could be a deal breaker, same with nanite and Lumen. For Unity users, with the lastest version I'm seeing no problems at all, and when problems come up The seem to get fixed quickly. I think the biggest question is going to be for people who use this, "what's more important, the benefits of using a Mac, or the benefits of using Unreal workflow" I'm leaning towards doing a final recommendation to use Unity instead but still doing more research

@@EnovairStudios You are right. It is sad truth that Unity is the only option for Mac/iOS developers now. I had given hope on Unreal with Mac, but finally I got the real answer is a big NO, and the price is high.

Young ppl should notice this. Unreal Engine is only good for PC/Console (X86) game develop - expecially AAA Games. But not mobile and not (both iOS and MacOS). And remember only run it on a PC or you will regret.

Well I will say this. Epic is for sure working on it because I can see the GitHub commits so it will take time. But you can make just about any amazing game in Unity. It can look just as good as unreal. The reason why the default in unity doesn't look good is because it's designed for all types of games some that don't even need lighting (mobile puzzles). The engine is just a tool that you use to express your creativity. If you really like mac and use it on a day to day basis, I honestly don't think you can go wrong using unity. Im saying this as someone who loves Unreal, but for me it's just a tool

@@EnovairStudios Guess what. I am the guy who both love Unreal and . And now this two are fighting each other. 😫 UE5 does have some advantages features, like:MetaHumen, Niagara, Nanite, Chaos, Lumen... I think Unity still have a long way to go to catch up with Unreal. For example: Blueprinet which is released in 2015 as a visual scripting for UE4. And 5 years later, Unity find out that they want to do the same thing and it is still no sign to be done in 2021. I don't know Unity very much, But I think Unity could finish the job with some others ways but not as easy as Unreal could be. I think for the desktop level AAA game development, UE5 is the best tool. Do you agree? Which of cause doesn't mean Unreal is good for mobile games or others. And also doesn't mean Unreal is better than Unity. But just for the desktop level AAA game development.
