I like your intention for including Mac platform for your game. We just need more people to prove that Mac users are actually want to play games on their Macs. (I'm also developing my own toy game engine for Metal API because I also believe in Mac gaming or even the rumoured Apple AR glasses gaming)

Thanks so much for the comment. Ya I do think if people could they would. The biggest thing is to just not limit ourselves and make sure we can make games for as many platforms as possible. also, thats amazing that you are working on your own engine. Let me know how that goes

I want to play games on my Mac. I am not spending another 4K on a device that I will not use daily and using Windows as a daily driver makes no sense :D I think that with all those new silicons, Mac gaming is not that far away.

I'm always happy to help. I really don't think you can go wrong sticking with PC and UE5. The biggest things is that the end user doesn't care what you use to make what you want, as long as they enjoy it. It's not the tools it's the Tool Master that counts. I want to help people achieve and share their vision regardless of the tools they use.

This is a great video as always.I have been looking for reasons not to buy the M1 Max for unreal development and this isn't a deal breaker as an indie.I believe Epic games will fix this in the coming release as they always do and also coming from years of using/contributing to Godot engine, i do not see this as an issue as game developments take a while except you are looking into a very simple game .
@EnovairStudios

Thanks so much for the comment. I do agree that epic will likely fix these issues. One of my discord members posted an epic job posting looking for Apple developers so I do believe they are working on it. I just wanted to make sure everyone has a chance to make an informed decision

Man that's a bummer. The whole reason I went for the maxed out M1 Max was to avoid any hard barriers or hang ups in Unreal Engine. I hope that maybe the engine will get some attention for M1 in the future like Blender is doing for Cycles Metal rendering. I think the more outcry there is for the platform, the more developers will take it serious. And it wouldn't hurt if Apple was a little more cooperative with devs.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
I hear you, I will say the source code shows that they are at least working on it at some level. Even the fact they have the m1 native compile albeit experimental and not working shows epic is committed. I just don't know when and what capacity we will see it
@skjoldgames
@skjoldgames 2 года назад
@@EnovairStudios That good at least. I guess I'll continue to develop for Intel and if the option to develop for Apple Silicon becomes and option, I'll try to migrate my project if possible. Good thing about indie games though is that they are usually small and short, so maybe not my next game but my next next game can be native.
@tobi6758
@tobi6758 2 года назад
If you make an M1 native game I will defiantly buy it! There is so much demand, so many people searching for M1 gaming on mac that I guess in 2-3 years we will also see some AAA devs to port to mac. Especially with Molten VK etc.

Love the m1 max, but I think I will have to return it. Development of Quest (VR) in UE4 is a no go. I really need play in "VR Preview" as part of my workflow, which isn't supported yet. The only other way is to fully build the game and install/launch it on the Quest.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Ya I honestly think it's going to be way more hassle than it's worth. That would take you way too long if you need to build each change. The M1 Max is amazing but right now it's not ready for UE development. I actually have 2 PCs and the M1 max

well.. i bought m1 in April/May 2021, before the m1 Max came out... and this is what happen when I started my brand new project in m1 macbook pro. Crash.... crash ... crash... Sad thing is, I reported back to Unity with my specs and everything, and the said they can't replicate my crash... So I had to switch back to my PC... cuz my imac is 2013. I really enjoy working in a Mac OS environment though, cuz pressing Cmd + (?) is easier to press ctrl + (?). And everything is more snappy in Mac OS.
@EnovairStudios

Back then it wasn't ready. The lastest tech release of Unity works though. I have been using it and haven't had a crash yet
@JZGreenline
@JZGreenline 2 года назад
I've tried recently. Everytime I make a new project it crashes all the time, and I'm on the M1 Max. The weird thing is it was working earlier this week. Idk if it was because I was testing out some code in XCode or what, but the unreliability is really bothering me. I literally can't even get it to launch. I downloaded the 25GB worth of debug. symbols, but it says it doesn't have symbols so I get no error messages.

great video! which do you think is the better solution (unity or unreal) in the current versions when it comes to photorealistic animations (not realtime)? which engine has the best working features on the m1 max for this area? thanks for your help.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment. I think both are great when it comes to animations but unreal seem more full featured. I would say right now though if you are using the M1 Max exclusively, Unity is the way to go. I'm noticing more issues with Unreal on the M1 Max. I actually have both a desktop with an RTX 3080 and an M1 Max so when I sync the projects via git repository I started to notice issues with calculations, shaders and a few other things. So if your using unreal I would stick to PC if your using Unity m1 max or PC seem to work just fine.

@@EnovairStudios thank you for your answer...that helps me a lot...since I only work on the m1 max, I will probably switch to unity then..:) do you happen to know if raytracing and pathtracing in the HDRP pipeline works on the m1 max or not? here you read two different opinions on the net and I could not test it myself yet. thank you again.

@@mediarocker hardware raytracing isn't supported on the m1 chipset, this isn't a Unity or Unreal issue but an Apple hardware issue unfortunately. From my understanding path tracing Is still a type of ray tracing so it's also not supported. For Photo realistic 3D graphics, PC is still king.

Dude, regardless of tools if you’re trying to develop for M1 the safest way is to build an iOS compliant game, iOS is the only OS you can rely on Apple not reformulating or breaking just enough for your game not to run right and force you to jump through quite a few hoops to possibly get it running again. You should consider the state of your game well after launch as well if not for all the work you’re going to have to put in just to give it chance to be discovered by new audiences regularly. It’s nice and all that you’re game runs on M1 Macs when it launches, but unless you have millions to get so many eyeballs on it at launch and hopefully get a decent number of players in from the start you’ll be marketing your games for years and Apple has a tendency to no just disregard game developers wishes in their OS development plans thus far. They’re still in a blood feud with Epic because Epic is forcing Apple to lose a chunk of their iOS game revenue. Apple casually wars with game developers and game tool developers beyond them never having any kind of consideration for games or game development on the Mac and it’s OS development. I hope Apple changes a bit, but I don’t know if that’s ever going to actually happen.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment. I actually use my gaming PC and Mac for development. Mac is when I want to do some work on the go and main PC for most of the work. So for me mac vs PC, unreal vs unity doesn't matter. I just use the tools I feel are right for the job

So right now there isn’t a version of Unreal 4 or 5 you can install with a simple executable? You have to compile from source? Is Epic going to change that?

There is, you just need to install the Epic launcher and then you can install the engine. This works for everything except Linux

I have very basic programming languages knowledge mainly on html, css and JavaScript as well as a little bit of Java. If I wanted to try and make a basic 2d platformer would you say I should try and study C# and go with unity? I also have the new M1 max MacBook Pro and I’d like for the game to be able and run natively on it.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Thanks for reaching out. This is what I would say, because you have some experience with Java which is also a C based language, you should have no trouble learning C#. So here is my recommendation Spend a weekend learning C# via RU-vid tutorials. Just the basics so you understand a bit of the language and have an idea what questions to ask. Then I would learn the very basics of unity, just where everything is, understand game objects and components. This should take a weekend to learn. Then I would start remaking something super simple like Flappy bird but do it without following a tutorial. Instead, break it down into simple problems, and then research how to solve that specific problem with the docs, stakeoverflow and RU-vid. Becareful not to use a flappy bird tutorial though. This will teach you better than any course as you will learn a process to solve problems, where to find resources, and really understand what it takes to finish a game. Hope this helps
