In this talk, Thong shares insights on how VR experiences are impacting training and development, health care, and even our own self perception. Virtual reality even has the capacity to create empathy and strengthen how we understand ourselves - and each other. Thong Nguyen is an entrepreneur who is using virtual reality to help people experience, test and learn from the future. His company, Roomera, works with innovative business leaders to apply VR within the enterprise to accelerate prototyping and research, enhance learning, and aid in sales development. Before Roomera, Thong spent 15 years in the corporate sector in roles ranging from analyst to VP and CTO. Featured as a 2017 Minnesota Business young entrepreneur, Thong has a profound fascination with exploring the nuances of human behavior, and is interested in technology that creates empathy and strengthens how we understand ourselves and each other. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I hate to be pessimistic but is that what you want, when a computer has the ability to create consciousness, where do we draw the line for a synthetic creation or a human, the difference between real life and and a simulation. Our senses are what create the world around us, if Vr can manipulate the inputs to these senses, there is nothing stopping it.where is the meaning of life ?

I don't think people realize how effective VR is for exercise. I can burn a ton of calories and not even notice until I'm done playing. Games like Beat Saber, Creed and Sprint Vector are very fun to play and between the 3, you work out about every muscle. It would also be great for keeping the elderly in shape. There are many options of difficulty for anyone no matter what kind of shape they are in.

@@barthez_ You will get better and better over the next month or two and once you get to expert or expert + mode, that's when it really gets fun. I can't play on any other difficulty now. Looking back, I watched in amazement when people would play on expert mode. I think everyone gets that good eventually. I rarely ever place below 300 unless it's a really popular map. I've been playing Beat Saber about 4 times a week now for about a year. It never gets old to me. With the 'Beat Saver' mod (if you're using PC) there are hundreds of great maps that rival the vanilla maps.

Firstly, I love the way that you speak! Your ability to remove filler words from your speech helps with the viewer look at you being more natural. Your insights into how Virtual Reality can be used in industries more expansive than games and experiments. I liked the research you showed from Stanford showing that VR can help increase memory retention and reaction time. I never thought about the application of using VR in helping people understand racism, body image and most impressively how you can give your self advice. Something that should be looked into within New Zealand with our high suicide numbers.
@JasmineRoberts
@JasmineRoberts 4 года назад
What is this obsession with older men and criticizing "filler words". I was critiqued to the point of bullying by an older man while giving a talk nervously. Filler words are not inherently bad and if anything can be more natural as it shows that the speaker is reformulating for the audience? Also you truly have never thought of VR for empathy (for others and the self) and understanding bias? That's most of Jeremy Bailenson's work (Stanford Lab). They have been doing research in this for over 10 years. It took this guy to tell you?
@ThongNguyen-qe7jp
@ThongNguyen-qe7jp 4 года назад
@@JasmineRoberts - I don't think he meant any harm to you or anyone else. With regard to the body of research, there's been (and continues to be) critical work and thought leadership that hasn't reached a majority of the non-academic or non-engineering population - and the point here was to share enough of that to spark curiosity and excitement for a very broad audience to learn more. On a different note, you are exploring some amazing topics. Enjoyed your ARIA talk this year.

@@ThongNguyen-qe7jp Your talk was excellent. There are many older individuals in the space that (in my opinion) bully the younger individuals. It is very hard for millennials to grow in the space--we are bring blocked. When the dusts settles this will not happen but people are fighting for money and visibility. I think it is more disheartening that empathy and bias wasn't considered from the get go from the commenter. I am glad you relayed it to other individuals who may not have thought of this use case.

Do not forget the emotion. It is a responsible balance of accepting and feeling the emotion while accepting it in that realm.
@jasonreed1352
@jasonreed1352 3 года назад
What are your thoughts regarding how one is able to forget an emotion. Do you perceive emotions to exist as an emergent property of our individual and collective observations of memories? What are your thoughts on the possible effects on the accuracy of perception, per se, if one has not genuinely consciously differentiated the mind observing from the mind perceiving? From my perspective, that which becomes observed can not have yet become accurately and authentically consciously perceived before being able to genuinely differentiate the two. In my experience, observation generally occurs when something is sensed. When one hears music, vibration has become sensed, observed, perceived, and experienced (nearly simultaneously, it seems, until you authentically observe inwardly during authentic introspection_. Profound epiphany can emerge when one becomes able to consciously differentiate in the self these two unique actions: observe and perceive. The conscious ability to accurately differentiate them within one's mind, is not common. In fact, when one believes that one can and does genuinely differentiate them already, and doesn't yet realize that emotions are not the emergent property of remembering one's accurately-perceived memories indicates that does not differentiate them accurately within the self. One must also observe how perceive is authentically different from exist. A product of emerging into conscious awareness within a fear-based conscious reality paradigm. (Fear-based reality paradigms result when collective consciousness develops maladaptive trauma responses.) An awesome topic upon which to dialogue, indeed. Viva la Evolution Go with love

This technology gives me the idea that we can use it syimulate the brain of old people who have been paralysed. In my own thinking, if the paralysed person can be put in a VR environment and a memory of him doing what he loves best or trying to stimulate him to carry out and activity, may force the brain to start to try activate those parts of the brain which could not function as a result of the paralysis. So it just going to be like tricking the body into doing what ithas already thought or believed it could not do... Am a Computer Science Researcher in the Field of Machine Learning from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria and i will love to see this my idea tested on those people, thank you.

I have actually written a paper about the same or at least very similar Topic : The effect of VR on the Psyche and came up with almost the same results of testing (example rubber hand effect, Perception Change etc.), but the resolve of the thesis was much darker. If we continue our future with VR we will have to be aware like with all media and new technology. We need to set boundries and define ratings so that people dont get a heartattack or a trauma wich is both quite possible under the right/ wrong circumstences. BUT BEFORE ALL THAT: We need muuuuch more longtermstudies with divers Groups of Testers and different testing thesis. For example between the long term use of VR and Symptoms similar to those of Body Integrity Disorder

11:38 You could easily imagine the opposite - a game where you play as a hero whose body type would cause you to loathe your own. As social media has shown us, being optimistic about new technology is easy, but making sure it has a positive impact in the real world is difficult.

It's nice to see how the progress of VR from around the 80's and 90's to what we have today. Still waiting for the implentation on Taste, Smell to be implemented. It's just a matter of time. Would however not be to nice for an implementation in FPS games with all the blood and gore. I figure some would throw up at that point, and perhaps useful for others. Question is how real do we want VR to feel.

The presentation reminded me Steven Spielberg's film "Ready Player One". The VR technology in mainstream is mostly developed by gaming industry, but as it was emphasized in the presentation, it has much more potential in almost any other field. At the moment, however, this technology lacks more credibility and accessibility. Credibility can be fixed by achieving photorealistic graphics, better physics mechanics and more detailed design. Accessibility, on the other hand, can be achieved by artificial intelligence, which will allow implementation of ideas without special knowledge and time expense. I am excited for PS5 and their next generation VR technology.

The better response time from using VR headset compared to regular monitors might have something to do with the fact that the display in a VR headset updates faster compared to a regular 60hz monitor. 50% faster actually.
