OK I love all these ideas and I’m all about DIY projects and I’ve loved everything that you guys have done so far but might I add a suggestion that might not have possibly been thought of… Where the bed is by the window turn it the opposite way raise it up and put the other bed underneath of it at the same level that it is. It would block off the entryway to the closet that is unused but it would give more area in the room to play and there wouldn’t be a head issue because one child’s head could be closer to the window and the other child’s head could be closer to the bedroom entryway door so it would look like a L shape. Just a suggestion but I think if you do batten board which I am always a fan of and you paint it gray just be careful not to get too dark in there since it’s a small space but I can’t wait to see what you all decide to do, I absolutely love your projects and I love you two together!💗💗💗 you remind me of my husband and myself!😂😂😂

My thoughts, for what they're worth... Why make it difficult for your boys to get in/out of bed (regardless of how fast they learn)? Don't put their heads so close to the ceiling. I would open the closet up; that would give you and your boys a lot more room. The items in that closet can be better stored elsewhere in the room with different storage options.

I agree with Tom. If the mattresses are that close to the ceiling that would be too claustrophobic. Almost like sleeping in a coffin.

We lived in and remodeled and older home with the slanted ceilings and used the slanted ceiling for our sons room. I'm with Tom on this one. Life goes by so fast. It's nice to have a refresh on the boys room but make it practical for your time and space continum. It's the holidays.enjoy your time with family When my son redid a vintage camper he build bunks for the kids bunks and they intially were excited about having this cool camper and these really cool bunks. Now a year or two down the road the ceiling it is too tight for comfort for the kids. They have gone to thinner matresses for this year but there's a need for adjusting the bunks for next year. Yes spruce but the idea of too much will feel closed in my opinion. It feels is a lot of work in my opinion with a short reward. No judgement just another prospective. Happy sprucing

With Tom on this one, Board & batten will make the room feel even narrower & your already taking up space by moving the beds farther out. Honestly as fast as the kids will grow Dawn is correct that you need a lot of space for underneath the beds but I don't think it is there. I agree with what I have seen others say I would try & open up the closet & make an amazing play/ hangout space. I know you guys will do what works best for you, just my 2 cents. Sounds like Dawn wants to turn the sleeping area into the berths on a navy ship. I had a friend in the navy and he said they were so close you couldn’t turn over without sliding out of bed. Not to mention cracking your head (which happens to me when I visit friends and sleep in their son’s old bunk bed - and I’m only 5’1”). The room is too small for grand plans. Do something to make the closet usable play space for them and keep the beds simple as they are.

Love most of what you’ve done, but these plans are not good. Open up the closet, boys can fold most of their clothes, and the single suit or dress jacket can be hung up in another part of the house. Raising the beds is useless, in less than 3 years the crawling under a bed to play forts will be over. Use a dresser and/or cube storage for clothes and toys. They need more floor space especially as they grow. And having raised kids, 3 years can easily extend to 5 or 6, kind of like the two day projects😂😂😂😂

Dawn, I normally agree with you! But! Tom is right!!! There isnt room to raise the beds very much. My dad was in construction, and I have done home repair/remodel since I was about 10. The bunk bed is amazing. It wont fit with that ceiling. The idea you had a couple month ago to put a thin wall between the feet of the beds is a great one. You could prob put drawers under the beds. Decorate each bed area specific to each boy. Board and Batten is not girly, however, Tom is right that it will add visual busyness to the walls. Love the idea of making a semi hidden play area in the closet. Tom, I LOVE your door stop!!! Our daughter loves to slam doors open against walls. As I hate patching sheetrock, I see some "Tom Style" door stops in our future!!!

Lol sorry Dawn, I'm team Tom on this one. We have a loft up north, I've hit my head plenty of times on the ceilings and so has my husband. My 8 and 10 yr old nephews are as tall as me and they have hit their heads as well. You get used to it but it does stink. I also say don't do board and batton in their room, it's too small of a room and it will stop your eye when you go in. Regular mud and tape would leave a nice finished look.

Just a thought on the boys' beds: is there possibly enough room to put a bunk bed on the wall to the left (the wall Dawn wants to put board and batten on)? That way the boys could have a play area against the wall where their beds are now. Just a thought! Love your videos and all the projects you've been doing! 😊❤️

Thats what I was wondering also. Boys love bunk beds usually, if there is enough room or if it could be made to work. My sister and I had the bunk beds with the top facing one way and the bottom facing another way and the left over space had a dresser on the bottom.

Make the boys room in the tv room and use their bedroom now as a small office. Your tv could hide in a cupboard style armoire in the living room and be closed up when not in use. The boys deserve a decent size space for their growing bodies, just like the girls. They will remember being left behind. Cheers

It seems like since making the bedroom feel bigger was the goal, leaving the beds as they are and opening the closet wall would accomplish that better than closing in the space with new bed arrangement that would probably steal space.

Dawn, forgive me, but I'm with Tom on this. That room is way too small to be a good fit for a loft bed. Loft beds and slanting ceilings? Not a good mix. It's so lovely to be able to sit up comfortably in bed and read. They wouldn't be able to do that anymore. One other possibility might be to put bunk beds against the wall you were considering to put board and batten on? Opening up the closet does sound like a wonderful idea! Think of all the space you'd be able to free up for them. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. You are both so talented at arranging spaces. I know whatever you two decide, it will make the boys very happy.😊

Our project is to watch you guys complete all your projects! It's a shame that what you desire to do for the boys that one of the beds couldn't go along the window side and still connect with the first bed as you walk into the room. Children do grow rather quickly, and though you hope that "size wise" they won't be pudgy, sometimes they do go through a plump stage! cozy is one thing, but closed-in is another...give thought to those feelings. I'm glad to see that you guys are still teaming together on all your projects. Gale Flowers

How about opening up the closet, make the “ bunk bed system” on the left wall as you walk into the closet? That would be on the stairwell wall end. Their heads could be at the end opposite the sloped closet wall. I know, clear as mud!🤣. More head and body height and more open play space.... Otherwise, dress the current beds differently, paint it all and create the fun play closet spot. Spend energy and $ in the basement bedroom for the boys!

I think the board and batten works well in the girls room as it reads as an end wall so makes sense being a feature wall. But the boys room is a side wall, so I think it would be better 'mudded' (in New Zealand we'd say 'gibstopped') and painted. Cheers!

Could you open the closet completely and put all the stored stuff in yhe basement. Then have one bed in the back of the closet area and one bed in the other area, maybe sideways under the length where the window is. That way there is no bed right next to the door. And they have all that space to play. Could probably fit a swing in the closet area as well, close to where the door was?? Have fun. Oh, banging your head hurts!! 100% with Tom on this one.

My impression that raising the beds, even if you pull them out further from the wall, would make the room feel even smaller and the boys would likely still hit their heads on the ceiling. Opening up the closet is a great idea to give the room a spacious feel. Mud and tape on the wall facing the beds would likely keep the room feeling less busy. Maybe add some cubbies / drawers by the window for a limited amount of toys....Of course, whatever you do, it will turn out GREAT and will work for your family. I heart you guys. Tom, you got this! :)

I don't think you'll need to add that much height to have room for drawers under the bed. Maybe add 6 more inches? It would keep the room feeling more open too. I like your idea of a build out behind the beds along the wall, either for books or treasures. I saw another person suggest wall climbing holds along the open wall, which sounds so fun for the boys! Another idea would be an activity wall there instead of board and batten. Maybe a magnetic board or white board? Best of luck with whatever you decide to do! We're currently painting and moving our home office to a different room in the house. It'll be larger and more cohesive so we're looking forward to it 🙂

Your boys are going to grow sooo fast! You won’t believe how tall and big they will get. Leave the beds alone and focus on opening up the closet area. Or, just (do I say this) start working on making their rooms in the basement.

I think it would take a lot less effort removing the wall with the closet door and having 'forts' round the corner, rather than raising the beds and making the room narrower. If you do go ahead with moving the beds out, how about shelves along the back of them rather than a faux wall? But all your other projects have turned out brilliantly, so I'm sure this will too, whatever you decide to do. Go for gold!

Dawn, this is the first time I’ve felt extreme frustration towards a project! I can appreciate that you wish to give them more play room, but have you spoken to them about what they want? It’s being presented that’s what *you* want, and in theory it’s for a good reason, but this is just...a little ridiculous. What if you rotated the bed closest to the window 90 degrees, and bunked the beds?

Double mattress on the bottom, next to the window, loft a twin over it, with the outside edge closer to the window, make sense? So instead of the upper bunk being next to the wall, it's next to the open area, which makes room overhead. Or, you could loft one bed over the other going different directions (right angle) next to the window. Lots of "space for activities"

Respectfully Dawn, I think you may be thinking that they will learn not to hit their heads, but that is in fully alert mode. The concern would be if they hear a noise in the night and not fully awake, rise up. I think either way on those batten boards, or whatever you call them. I think they would just give it a more finished look, not girly.
