CAN WE CHANGE BUCKS SUMMER/FALL RANGES BY ADDING FOOD PLOTS???

In this video I discuss if we change mature whitetail bucks summer and fall ranges and use real life examples to see if we can change them by adding food plots. Deer hunters across America have all seen examples of this, a large bachelor group of bucks uses your farm all summer long but as soon as summer switches to fall the bucks vanish and shift to their fall rutting areas. By adding food and cover will the bucks hang around and not shift to the fall rutting areas.

Wes you have got it figured out! I’ve hunted for 40 years and have seen what you’ve observed year after year. The big mature bucks are a totally different species than a 1-4 year old buck and you have to hunt them accordingly. Mature bucks know when hunting season starts and when roaming around all night checking for does they smell where the hunters are walking, accessing, climbing trees, and they hear all the hunting related activities going on. They retreat to the place that has kept them alive and allowed them to become a mature buck. They know where the safety zones are and that were they’ll hunker down to stay alive. Where can I get info on booking a hunt with your outfitter? Thanks for all you do!

Thanks Tim, I 100% agree, those old bucks have become masters at surviving and use everything they possibly can to avoid any human interactions. I’ve got a Facebook page Clark’s river Whitetails, but I am booked full for the 2024 season. Thanks for watching

I agree. I own deer in Indiana with a breeder. The deer born in our pens will walk around with you and even let you pet them from fawn to 4-5 years old. The deer we buy, even yearlings never let you get near them even after years of living in the same pens where they see you all the time and see other deer around you. Bottom line is you can train anything when it’s young and nothing when it’s older, even bears and tigers. The good thing about that great food and habitat is you can train those youngsters to hang around and also if you have adequate spacing entice some stragglers. Good topic.

Same thing on my place as well. One additional thing I've noticed is that as you do get those 5-6 yo that will hang around the food there will a lot of times be a dominant one that will lay claim close by and the other ones may disappear or just sporadically show.

Yep those old dominant bucks will push a lot of good young bucks off. Lots of times the dominant one isn’t the most desirable for us to hunt.

Exactly last year. 6.5 yo 120 8 would yearly run off 130-150 type subordinates. He was tough as heck to pattern but finally got him out this year. Anxious to see how this next year plays out now. @@DIYfoodplotpro

My deer seem to leave or disappear only about one or two days BEFORE the start of Gun season. There's got to be a Memo being sent out to the deer advising them to get the heck out of Dodge!! smh/lol

Wow!! That’s pretty wild! They 100% know are y’all coming in there. Have you tried moving stands to new locations? Sounds like the deer herd have got that area figured out. Thanks for watching

I think dr Harper or don Higgins said they grew up at their summer range and leave to prevent inbreeding? Take it with a grain of salt. Anyway just shows how important fall food is to get someone else summer bucks .

That makes sense! Yes sir if you have the food you will have the bucks from somewhere, and the later it gets the more stressed they are the more they will flock to it! Thanks for watching

Those older bucks are stuck in their way. They stick with what works. I experience the same on my farm.
