No disc, no tiller, no plow? No problem! No till food plots can be an easy remedy for both a lack of equipment and time. You can take an old field and covert it to an incredible food plot in just one summer, even after the weeds are over a foot tall. Here is a no till food plot recipe that I have been using for over 20 years to plant beautiful no till food plots, in overgrown fields of weeds.

Awesome timing on this video jeff. I am just about at the same time frame with you and your new property in Minnesota. I live in northern Minnesota. I have been watching your videos for three years and modeling my 40 acre parcel on your advice for that time and have immediately seen success. Thank you for all your info that you give freely it really does work. Also, thank you for always putting the dates for different zones, that has really helped to know what timing we need to do things up here in the cold north. Awesome video again keep it up!

Been following Jeff’s plan for last three years where I have permission to hunt and plant. Plots have turned out great and the farmer is actually getting in on the concept. He set a few acres aside to do this very thing to build the soil back up in one of his fields where he was not getting the yield. I now have permission to cover crop any of his fields so he can no-till in the spring as well. He has even offered me the seed. Thanks for sharing all the great information, even for non land owners.

Competitive Inhibition is the technique you are using with buckwheat. Just like "good bacteria" in our gut. Also seems like you are increasing the organic matter in the top soil as well. Great advice on both, thanks Jeff! Keep up the hard work and God Bless

I'm in Northeast GA, used your tip about winter rye to save a plot with great success! I over seeded clover when it was about knee high. I crushed half of the plot in late April when it was in the dough stage, the clover was insanely high in the rye and is already coming back through! Thanks for all your wisdom!

I planted rye on my plot last year with he end of sept in se Ohio. The plot had just been made with a forestry mulcher and it was so thick with mulch that you could hardly see soil. It came up great and was 5 feet tall this spring. Your methods work even when the debris is thick!!

First off, thank you for the great content you put out there for us! On our farm in east Kansas, we have a rocky area that we want to get a plot on. After I do my sprayings, I was going to try durana white clover with rye cover crop as you recommend. Almost too rocky to till, would the broadcast of clover and rye around September be okay and do I need to drag to ensure good seed to soil contact. I was going to try to till it after I sprayed but I feel the tiller won't hold up with the rocks..

Love the video, as always. Excited to be trying your no-till method for the first time this year, just up the road in Wabasha County. One thing I'm confused about, though. In a couple of videos you've mentioned mixing clover with the brassica blend. Would you still recommend that if overseeding with winter rye? Does the clover just provide some variety and/or insurance in case the brassica yield is weak?

Thanks Joseph! Depends on the type of weed...pig weed, smart weed and others...all need 2-4D. Gly won't touch quite a few weeds. Just words from over 2 decades of experience and 1000s of total acres sprayed. Even clover can't be killed by Gly. Every plot even on the same land, can be different. Let alone region to region and state to state.

Again, great video on no till planting. You mentioned on your new plots, the larger seeds may not germinate due to all the weed debris and not making it to the soil. I haven't had a chance to get the early spraying in but what about mowing to mulch everything up and them spraying a couple days later after the grass starts taking off again. Then moving a second time even lower prior to spraying? I just have access to a push low mower (sweat equity) so it would be short. Curious if you've tried this or heard of anyone trying this in all your travels. Thanks for everything you do and I hope to get a response. Stay safe.

Two plots......first one just had buckwheat broadcast on it. Second one was a little out of control with ~5 foot tall winter rye along with some weeds. Well, I rolled the rye flat and then a day later sprayed it with Gly + 2-4D. I may have to do some touch-up spraying in a couple of weeks, but I'm wondering if you or anyone else has had success broadcasting into rye thatch? Thinking I'll spray again ~7/4 and broadcast ~8/3 with 3rd spray TBD based on weeds at that time. Could always mow the remaining chaff if it seems too thick for my larger seeds as a last resort.

Chad Thurmer I watched a video from Steve Bartiylla and he was promoting doe factories and basically crapping on Jeff. I told him to float, I have hunted doe factories with some huge bucks on the properties. First we could never keep food growing, they would mow it down. Second we never saw any of the giant bucks and even when we saw a decent buck you had 40 does eyes on you so you can’t ever move. Steve says the more does the better, I’ll stick to Jeff’s theories, it’s what I’ve noticed without really knowing why.

Whitetail Habitat Solutions I rented a tractor and tiller, broadcasted corn seed and Rolled over it with a sod roller. Not sure, other than the seed was free from DNR and a few years old.

Dang...man that's a lot of work Chad! Old seed is the cause of a lot of food plot fails...I be the culprit? Unless it was a small area and critters got to it? But even then they typically don't get them all...feel for ya!

Does it make a difference if I mowed it before I spray south central arkansas here
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 года назад
No it doesn't usually. The only problem is if it creates a thatch layer that seed can't get into. Sometimes letting it does while it stands allows for better seed to soil contact in the future.

are you saying that the first year you establish a no till food plot...that because of the amount a debris from the small shrubs and other grasses, that it is best to skip the cover crop and just do another spraying and go straight into the late season planting? thanks!
@redferngrows3917
@redferngrows3917 4 года назад
or is it just this case the first year for seed that can be thrown right on the soil like clover, wheat, winter rye and brassica. If so then that would help me make my decision on what im planting for my first year on this newly cleared plot.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 года назад
Hi Ryan! Typically? It just depends on if you have good seed to soil contact, or not. Any seed has to touch the soil...some seeds need to be covered by soil or the buckwheat (beans, peas, oats). I have some plots in MN that will be in the buckwheat no till program...some as first year sprayed plots like in this video

Your dates are for rifle season it seams. We enjoy bow hunting also. Up by Detroit Lakes MN and planting around July 15 we hope. New woods food plots planting some clover today and will broadcast rye if needed later. Your channel is a big help except the dates you are saying. Can you say the best dates to plant for bow hunters also? Thanks
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 года назад
Those are a really dates for bowhunters...and rifle hunters 😉 If you understand food plotting you can't have one without the other. Clover is not a good crop for northern deer hunters btw. All of your plots should be going in around 8/1 for your area. Unless you are planting corn. I would suggest purchasing my 2014 food plot book, or watching one of my dozens of food plot videos in my playlist...will really help you out and get you pointed in the right direction. Buckwheat would be great for you to plant right now...then a fall blend seeded into the buckwheat early August. Try this out ..your best bet 😉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CwzP0yME2AU.html

In Ontario Canada they banned non-agricultural purchase of glyphosate, so I guess I have to acquire tillage equipment.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 года назад
Or just use, Simazine (pre emergent), clethodim (grass killer) or 2-4D (broadleaf killer) each are stronger than Glyphosate, but that isn't the point with the fail of that ban 😉
