Explore the innovative ways countries are revolutionizing farming to ensure we can feed humanity in a way that works with the environment.
--
About 10,000 years ago, humans began to farm. This agricultural revolution was a turning point in our history and enabled the existence of civilization. Today, nearly 40% of our planet is farmland. Spread all over the world, these lands are the pieces to a global puzzle we’re all facing: in the future, how can we feed every member of a growing population a healthy diet? Brent Loken investigates.

I'm a farmer. If you want to have any chance of solving the challenges of sustainable agriculture, *make sure farmers have the money to afford what is needed to make this happen* . Supermarkets pay us the same for our produce as they paid us 12 years ago, while all costs from fertilizer to labor to electricity have increased dramatically. They take a HUGE mark-up and sell at many multiples higher price. They need to pay farmers A LOT more if we even stand a chance, for a hope, to a sustainable future.

In the U.S. lawns use more acres than any irrigated crop. People waste large amounts of money on water and fertilizer and pesticides, much of which will get washed off and cause algae blooms in nearby lakes. If we all had backyard gardens and useful food trees (instead of inedible ornamentals), that would be a giant step forward. Plus more butterflies and bees and birds.

I really believe farming should be taught and practiced in school as mandatory subjects so the people can understand the value of food and joy of growing eatables in their backyards. There is need to encourage people to grow garden and vegetables instead of lawns. I think it will help the nature as well as our mental health.

Hello from Argentina, i go to one, 11 hours a day, 5 days a week throgh 6 years. Final exam is to make a functional project about what you choose to specialize on, plants or animals. During the last year, the only subjects u have are the ones related to ur project, u don't graduate unless u make ur project functional, economically viable and it has to last at least a year. Here are some examples of what has been made until now Biodigester Aromatics Beer from barley Mead Cattle raising, born from insemination Hydroponics Whole year of production (pigs, hens, goats, cows, turkey, sheeps, chickens etc) It is really hard and tiring, most teens my age (17, 5th year) dont even think about the impact farming does to the enviroment. And is actually sad to see that from 300 teens that attend to it nearly ten are able to graduate each year. The video above, it is interesting but does not show near half of what it actually is. Thanks for reading this, hope to find more people that think it is necesary to start learning the farming methods. And sorry if i made a typo.

Hi from Poland. I also believe this is the correct way to produce food, but if you want to learn it, it's either expensive, difficult or both. There are recent great research about intercropping, many herbs haven't even been tested if useful as pesticides, there's lots of traditional knowledge which has been abandoned or forgotten - like how to mix different grains for more resilient crops, etc. Unfortunately this bits and pieces are not always organized and available, even though there's almost everything on the internet now. The point is that if you find it interesting or important, then it's on you to post it on YT, wikipedia or whatever.

Agricultural revolution is required when their is shortage of food produced for the total number of people to be fed. Which is not the case; the food produced is surplus for the world's population. In India if for next two years farmers don't grow wheat then still the country's population can be fed through the buffer stock. So the problem is mismanagement of food. Food is in excess with some and they waste it. And many don't even have food to have a single meal a day. Another agricultural revolution might be required when world's population crosses 9 billion.

Since the upcoming generations have a different mindset and view of the world. Many of them lived in areas that are diverse meaning more acceptance to different cultures. I also already see many of the young generation protest against our government's method of handling several problems. So from what I see, the new generations are becoming more politically active and since there has been an increase of people going to college that also means that the will be more educationally aware. Instead of putting money in developing chemical fertilizers and pesticides and thus destroying the land further, we use focus the ways the more yield is produced with very less damage. Most focus should be on making organic compost which will yield the nutrition of land. And for that better waste management can be implemented. The most important part is to find an alternative to beef. 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions are due to the production of beef and cheese. Deforestation's #1 cause is creating pastures (look at the amazon or the boreal forest). A truly green world is one where we don't eat a lot of beef. Without that, all of this is simply not the full picture. Sincerely, a meat loving chemist.

@derfred527
@derfred527 3 года назад
i think it might come but only for a small priviliged percentage of the world's population maybe, as it seems to require advanced technology. Big companies will eventually come to the point where even they have to think about sustainability as they can't make money off of dead land and they will have the financial power to develope and afford those technologies. I do agree though that the companies will only have the profit in mind and not feeding the world population. I could imagine that food prices might fall due to the higher production rates we might get from this while food waste might grow in parallel and none of the food will reach the poorer countries' populations in which these foods might grow. Even today we would be able to feed the world's population but we don't because the big companies don't see the profit in it.
