Explore what makes trees a vital part of cities, and how urban spaces throughout history have embraced the importance of trees.
--
By 2050, it’s estimated that over 65% of the world will be living in cities. We may think of nature as being unconnected to our urban spaces, but trees have always been an essential part of successful cities. Humanity has been uncovering these arboreal benefits since the creation of our first cities thousands of years ago. So what makes trees so important to a city’s survival? Stefan Al explains.

Here's a nice example: When my parents bought their house, there was only 1 tree and it has since had to be uprooted due to interfering with pavement. However, since moving in, my parents have planted 5 trees in their garden. A pine tree, a maple, 2 apple trees, and a cherry tree all grow on their property. My mom also has bird feeders all over the place. My mom's garden has become a food court for wildlife. Hummingbirds, cardinals, sparrows, squirrels, rabbits, even deer have been spotted in the yard.

Glad to know that y city is also dedicating to plant more trees and build more green spaces, nowhere to the Singaporean level though, but according to the report, Shanghai aimed to have 18% of the land covered by greens. Didn't expect the city I'm studying in to be featured here in the end! I can really tell the presence of trees does bring benefits compared to cities without them. And yes, the Gardens by the Bay Supertrees are magnificent sight. This actually gets to me personally... My city of Jakarta, specifically in a region called Kelapa Gading, used to have a boulevard planted with trees from end to end, complete with a garden in a familiar roundabout. Then the development for extensive transport comes and just within a flash, all the green stuff get chopped down and the green circle gets converted into a construction site. True, there's still some shade on the road, but of concrete and steel rather than leaves. The air feels a bit stuffier and warmer lately... It doesn't feel the same anymore, does it?

Excellent content 😊 0:48 In Anuradhapura trees were sacred 💙 2:30 In the 1870’s, Manhattan had few trees outside the island’s parks 🤨 2:53 In modern day Hong Kong, tall skyscrapers and underground infrastructure make it difficult for trees to grow. - I lived 8 years in Hong Kong 4:16 No city is more committed to trees than Singapore. Since 1967, Singapore’s government has planted over 1.2 million trees 🌳🌳🌳🌳. Trees and vegetation currently cover over 50% of Singapore’s landmass! 4:49 By 2050, it’s estimated that over 65% of the world will be living in cities. City planners can lay an eco-friendly foundation but it’s up to the people who live in these urban forests to make them homes for more than humans.

Instead of damning and wiring people's minds that the Earth is doomed, how about we make a positive outlook about our environment and put things into action? It's never to late for us to change individually😀☺️

Depends really if the statistics is correct. There is no use trying to save a life if they are in terminal stage or the damage is extensive that any treatment is pointless...

All city buildings should have tree plantings on their rooftops. Their maintenance would be healthy and therapeutic; the air would be cleaner and the views would be nicer. 🌳😍
@kinn11
@kinn11 3 года назад
i heard that planting trees or having rooftop gardens weaken the concrete structure risking the building's collapse because of the water used as well as the extra weight in the soil and trees
@BlueSkyBonsai
@BlueSkyBonsai 3 года назад
@@kinn11 Yep I can see that would be a problem. I guess you'd need to do it with some kind of impervious material that does not let roots through. But with drainage points ... Haha like a bonsai pot! In a way that captures all the run-off water and stores it for future watering. On the other hand, of course trees can get very big and heavy over many years, so that could risk building structures as the tree grows. Maybe new buildings should be architected with plantings as part of the design?

I have planted several trees on our property. I've planted tall trees on the south side of our property to shade our home in Summer and several fruit trees in our back yard. My neighbor has cut down all trees and shrubs and uses only their A/C to cool their house. This same neighbor complains if any of my trees drop a single leaf in their yard. If their A/C breaks down or we have a sustained power outage they cook while we enjoy the shade of our trees.

Our house almost covers 70% of our total perimeter, but my father still encourages us to plant trees all around us. We had about 10trees around us (not including banana "trees") and we have 2 new seedlings growing... and yes the advantages are great... I compared the surrounding temperature of our house to our relatives close by and yeah, their perimeters are treeless and its borderline summer temperature even in mid november... their land is cemented and the only plant life are some potted roses and poppies, nothing else The air is always fresh here at my home, lots of natural shade and not the kind where its totally dark... And maybe the only disadvantage we have for having trees is the amount of fruit rotting on our feet when the fruiting season starts... we just cant eat them all, too many XD
